ABOUT TOPIC: Historically Big data has been around for several decades - in fact, in some versions it predates even the Internet and the Web. But ‘Big Data’ has become, along with ‘Analytics’ the all ubiquitous buzzwords only in the more recent past. Also, like the legendary story of the elephant and the blind men, there are several versions of what exactly they are, of their usefulness and application. So how do we separate out the facts from fiction? This talk looks at the concepts and key terms associated with ‘Big Data' and 'Analytics’, the technologies that have risen to deal with them and some examples of practical applications in business and industry. Finally, the talk considers Big Data and Analytics from the perspective of Library and Information Science, understanding some of the experiments carried out and future areas of possible applications. It also briefly covers if the skills of library and information professional can be relevant in this new domain. After all, loosely speaking, are we not the managers of organized data (books/information/knowledge) in the pre big-data world? ABOUT SPEAKER: Suvarsha Minj works as Knowledge Curator in a start-up Kaybus Inc. - a Enterprise SaaS based Knowledge Automation Company. The company works transforming enterprise information into knowledge by personalizing it to individual needs in context using Big Data technologies. In the past, she has worked on several projects at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She was part of the SALIS (Software and Licensing Information System) at ERNET and the project SJPI (Scientific Journal Publishing in India) using Open Journal Systems (OJS) at NCSI. More recently, she has led in porting the 100-year-old journal, The Journal of the Indian Institute of Science into OJS, and digitize and make available on an Archive Management System all the publications - since its inception in 1974 - of the Center for Sustainable Technologies, IISc. She has published some national and international papers based on her work. It is started functioning in the year 2000. The college is situated on the top of a panoramic hill called Kundoormala and is six kilometers away from Thalassery town and is just 1.5 kilometers north from Thalassery - Coorg State High Way, which cuts to the college road at Nayanar Road Junction. The college is recognized by the AICTE and affiliated to Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) Cochin. There are six branches of engineering in the B. Tech. and Two M. Tech. programmes. It has become one of the biggest engineering colleges in the northern part of Kerala. The college has been selected for the grant of aid under phase II of the TEQIP and the workshop is being conducted under this programme. Central Library has a very good collection of Books, CDs, Journals, archives and E- documents. Library subscribes more than 100 print Journals and 7 packages of online journals such as ASME, IEEE, Mc- Graw Hill, Elsevier, Wiley, J-gate etc. The Central Library is fully automated since 2010 by using GRANDA Library Automation Software. Now we are shifted to KOHA Integrated Library System. Casual / sick leave shall not be accumulated and leave not availed of during any particular year shall expire at the end of that year. However, you will be allowed to avail casual leave to prevent hardship when you are obliged to remain absent for some unforeseen and emergent reason and for which under other circumstances stipend would have deducted for the days absent. 7. While undergoing training at the Institute you will observe all safety regulations and see that no damage to the Institute’s property is caused. In case, it is found that you have caused any damage to the property of the Institute, you hereby agree to reimburse or make good the damage caused. Any decision regarding the extent of your liability on such account will be at the discretion of the Institute. 8. It is expressly understood between the parties that the On-the-job Training Programme does not establish any relationship of employer and employee between the Institute and yourself. 9. The Institute will be entitled to discontinue the training programme without assigning any reasons thereof, if in the opinion of the Institute, your progress is not satisfactory or your continuance in the Institute is deemed undesirable. 10.
