He left this world for his heavenly abode after a prolonged battle against cancer at a private nursing home in Rajarhat. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law and grandson.Till the last days of his eventful life he was actively associated with library movement in West Bengal. He was born on 24.07.1933 in the then East Bengal presently Bangladesh. Later on he shifted to Kolkata with his family .Since childhood he had seen hardships, had to fight against poverty and eventually got associated with the communist movement. He later on had chosen librarianship as his profession. He had long been associated with the Bengal Library Association certificate course in library science as a teacher. He was associated with IASLIC as a council member, as member of different editorial boards of different IASLIC publications. His journey in this profession started long back in 1963 as a librarian in Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture. He then joined IIM Kolkata library in 1964. He came in contact with Historian Barun De and founded Centre for studies in social science and served as a librarian there from 1973 to 1993. Among his several other notable contributions, he is well remembered for writing a chronology on social science in Economic and Political Review. While serving as a librarian in âBhawani Sen Granthagar o Gabeshana Kendraâ he took initiative to apply Marxist theory and laws in historical and social science research and maintained a similar collection relevant to the purpose. He wrote several books including âAkkharer abahon athoba paribartaman granthagar bhabnaâ, âThe Argumentative Indian: sobdo aarsuddhatar swaralipiâ, âBoi Jatha â etc. One of his unforgettable contribution was his editorship of a four-volume book titled âJanayuddha Deshbhag O Bharater Communist Partyâ. Among the books published in English âIndian Political Movements1919-1971: a systematic bibliographyâ and ajoint editorship with eminent librarian Arunkumar Dasgupta titled âReligion Secularism and Conversion in India: a documentationâ are his notable works. As desired by him, his body is donated to N R S Medical College and Hospital for development of Medical Sciences. Sri Ghosh has contributed a lot in development of IASLIC activities. WHY IITS HAVE FAILED TO PRODUCE NOBEL LAUREATES The Indian Institute of Technology, the country's most famous and prestigious engineering school, has failed to produce a single Nobel laureate despite the government pouring "thousands of millions of rupees", noted a joint study of industry body Assocham and Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences. "While the much touted IITs have an annual enrollment of 10,000-15,000, focused only on the brightest of the bright, not a single great worldwide patent has emerged, nor have they produced a single Nobel Laureate," the study says. IITs have failed to create a mark when it comes to research and innovation because 90 per cent of funding earmarked for the education sector is used for payment of salaries and creating physical infrastructure, the study found. "We still do not have a single equivalent of a Google, Facebook, Microsoft or Walmart or a Nike. Even a small country like Italy or Finland does better!" said DS Rawat of Assocham. The skewed funding plagues not only the IITs, but the entire higher education sector, resulting in "sub-standard" quality, the study revealed. As a result, Indian students spend $7 billion or around Rs. 45,000 crore per year on foreign education, the study found. "Indians spend about $6-7 billion every year in sending their children abroad for higher education. It is not just the elite who spend generously on a good education and credentials but the middle class families also spend their life time savings to educating their children abroad," the study noted with concern. Interestingly, the money spent on foreign education is nearly 60 per cent of the funds Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has allocated to the education sector for next fiscal. Indian universities have little money for research and innovation, the biggest reason why India ranks lowly when it comes to new patents and start-ups in technology and innovation, the study says. Brain drain is another factor that hampers world class innovation in the country. According to the study, many IITians who go abroad for research do not return home after obtaining their doctoral programmes. Options for submitting your story Video recordings Videos should be no more than 5 minutes in length. Please clearly introduce yourself, your role, and the library you work in at the beginning of your recording. - A recording on a mobile device or phone, such as an iPad, iPhone, or Galaxy is of a sufficient quality. - Videos should be provided in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, .mpg - Remember to make your recording holding your device in the landscape position (sideways) rather than portrait (upright) - Think about the setting: do you want to be in a static position, or would you like the guide the viewer around your library? - Think about location: aim to record the video in a location that is relevant to the subject matter, ideally in the library environment. - Think about framing: distance from the camera and positioning in the frame - Think about background and costume: Try not to have a mess in the background or wear unprofessional/stripy clothing - Think about lighting: Lighting directly onto the speaker, not behind or from the side - Think about the audio: Quiet room to minimise background noise; close enough to the camera to pick up the audio clearly if the microphone is built into the camera Audio recordings Audio recordings should be no longer than 5 minutes in length. The Lecture started with welcome address and brief introduction of lecture series by Dr. Francis Jayakanth. Dr. IRN Goudar, who presided the function, introduced speaker and presented his views about the buzz word “Big Data” which is widely talked in present social networking context. He also appreciated organizers – and the three organizations - for reinitiating monthly lecture series in Bangalore. Mrs. Suvarsha, the speaker, introduced concept &history of Big Data and its nature. She explained Big data with its 4Vs terminology i.e Volume (terabytes to exabytes of data), Velocity (Data in motion, streaming data), Variety (Data in many formats like structured, semi structured, unstructured etc), Veracity (Data in doubt). She spoke about big data analytics which has got wide market applications, for example market trends, customer preferences etc. The history of big data analytics was demonstrated with a YouTube video. Survasha highlighted key enablers and technologies of big data. She explained MapReduce,Apache Hadoop – 2005, NoSQL and other big data related technologies. She also mentioned applications of big data in various fields by giving various examples like, Wal-Mart can predict what products will sell, Car insurance companies understand how well their customers actually drive, Obama’s 2012 election win by analyzing big data analytics etc. She concluded her talk byexplaining applications of Big Data concepts in LIS field; she mentioned various ongoing projects in LIS arena. She opined that possible applications of Big Data in LIS field can be: 1.Knowledge production – keeping the tabs – using web data, 2.Information – Books, articles, data sets, metadata along with other data 3.Users – Usage of information 4.Webometrics - large scale data analysis identifying appropriate research fields for new information sources based upon an initial analysis of its potential 5.Bibliometrics and Altmetrics - identify patterns, discover new knowledge, and inform public and scholarly decision making Finally she concluded her talk by explaining path of Knowledge automation and Kaybus knowledge automation tool demonstration. There was interactive question answer session. The lecture was attended by more than 40 professionals from academic, R & D, corporate, student community. The lecture was well received and appreciated by the participants. Mr. Ananda Byrappa thanked Mrs. Suvarsha for informative talk and Dr. IRN Goudar for presiding over the lecture. Anand thanked audience for making the first Bits and Bytes lecture successful by turning in large numbers. 'Face a Book Challenge' 2014-'15, a school reading and information literacy project, concluded.

Dear Professionals, *"Face a Book (FaB) Challenge*" is a reading and information literacy (IL) programme to promote reading habit and develop information literacy skills among students during summer holidays, followed by continuous and yearlong activities and comprehensive evaluation. FaB Challenge is conceived by the Library of Kendriya Vidyala Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The project was launched in April 2014 and concluded in February 2015. Fifty students from class VI to XII and four teachers were participated in the project and successfully completed all four activities assigned to them. In the first stage, all participants were given with an option to select their own FaB book from the library. They red the book during the summer holidays and engaged in the assigned activities. The activities include (i) publishing a review of the selected book on the project blog (participants are provided with log in facility to access the blog themselves where they can post contents like reviews, comments, critical analysis, notes, studies and recommendations, etc) (ii) preparation of a scrap book (titled as *“My Little Book on_______”*, with a review of the selected book, author profile, bibliography, character sketches, new words/phrases, drawings, paintings, quizzes, quotations, images, comments, references, etc.), (iii) shooting and uploading of a one minute video (Booktalk) on the book, and (iv) presenting a programme (skit, play, reviews, etc) based on the book in the school assembly. The participants were known as "FaB Challengers". Anyone could challenge an FaB Challenger on the selected book. Evaluation was carried out in each and every stage and eight students were selected as the best performers. Certificates, badges and prizes were presented to the winners and other participants. MISSION TO REVIVE BOOK WEALTH The students at Government Central High School, Attakkulangara, are engaged in an interesting treasure hunt. They find one word a day, from the books at the library. In the process they get to know what wealth their library possesses - thousands of old and rare books, which were lying neglected until last year. In 2014, a group of volunteers had embarked on the 'Library First Aid' project led by Achuthshankar S Nair, Honorary Director, Centre for Bio-informatics, University of Kerala. They had managed to go through each and every book, and sort what was then a mess, into a library, useful for the students. Usha Raghavan, the Mathematics teacher who serves as the library in-charge, says that they have counted 16,000 books. Some of the moth-eaten, yellowed books are works from another century. "Chances are that the collection might have some rare books, like those written by Vedachalam," says Achuthshankar. "A proponent of Dravidianism, Vedachalam had changed his name to Maramalai Adikal, a name devoid of Sanskrit words. He was a teacher at the Central School," says Achuthshankar. After the Library First Aid project which was supported by C-DIT, Achuthshankar realised that the project can be easily replicated in all schools where books were lying neglected. He made a proposal to the government for a project where volunteers would be given food and travel expenses, in return for the 'first aid' service. Alongside, there was a proposal to establish a 'School Heritage Library'. Every school should donate books older than 50 years to a well-appointed centralised library, which has a librarian. ''Since schools do not have the post of a librarian, this idea can make sure that the books do not lie abandoned. If there are duplicate copies of the same book, the schools can generate money by selling them,'' says Achuthshankar. At Attakkulangara, the First Aid project has opened up a world of interesting words to the children. Usha says that the children were told to find words only for the month of November, but have become really interested in the 'treasure hunt'. However it cannot just be any word, and has to be something in which you can read the history and heritage of a place, the school librarian has told them. GOOGLE TO RANK WEBSITES BASED ON FACTS NOT LINKS Google plans to rank websites on its search engine based on factual accuracy, a move that will prevent sites full of misinformation from appearing first in search results. The search engine currently uses the number of incoming links to a Web page as a proxy for quality, determining where it appears in search results. So pages that many other sites link to are ranked higher. The disadvantage of the system is that websites full of misinformation can rise up the rankings, if enough people link to them, 'New Scientist' reported. The trustworthiness of a web page might help it rise up Google's rankings if the search giant starts to measure quality by facts. A Google research team is adapting that model to measure the trustworthiness of a page, rather than its reputation across the web. Instead of counting incoming links, the system will count the number of incorrect facts within a page. The score they compute for each page is its Knowledge-Based Trust score. The software works by tapping into the Knowledge Vault, the vast store of facts that Google has pulled off the internet. Those facts which the web unanimously agrees on are considered a reasonable proxy for truth. Web pages that contain contradictory information are bumped down the rankings. Friends: Hundreds of quality college-level open textbooks are available and the number is expected to increase rapidly. A large number of Foundations and academic consortia in the US are actively promoting and adopting open textbooks and thus helping the student communities save millions of dollars. The LIS community in Indian academic institutions should alert the heads of their institutions, faculty and students to this development. Some of these books are dynamic, meaning they change over time incorporating more recent examples and student quizes. Friends: Please look up the website of 'Knowledge Unlatched.' It appears to be an excellent programme for some leading Indian institutions to join. Already close to 300 institutions (including Fudan University in China and two institutions in South Africa) have joined. The partnering publishers include several Universities. In any case all books are free to download by our researchers and students. But this kind of OA is made possible by the member institutions sharing the cost. More the members lower will be the cost to each of them. Librarians of key Indian academic and R&D institutions might wish to recommend joining this programme to their vice chancellors and directors. I spoke to two leaders of the OA movement and both of them felt that Indian institutions would benefit by joining the programme.
