LIS Profession Heading Towards Parasitic Status? A Rejoinder

Dear Sir/madam, This write up is in response to Prof. I.R.N. Gouder’s posting entitled “LIS Profession heading towards parasitic status? Published in LIS forum on 31th May 2015. Before making a rejoinder for this posting, let me make a disclaimer that, I have making this comment on my personal behalf. The parity with regards to salary of LIS profession and teaching fraternity is always a continuous issue and has been in discussion for quite some time, so as the appointments of librarians in universities and other highly reputed institutions. Anil Singh of NCERT has recently written a small piece in Current Science about how libraries and librarians have been neglected in academic and scientific organizations in India (See http://www.currentscience.ac.in/Volumes/108/09/1578.pdf) Library professionals have to do something to address this issue seriously. Professional associations have a bigger role in addressing this issue. Let us come to the core issue of Prof. I.R.N. Gouder postings that LIS schools across the globe have been closing or converting themselves as Information Schools or I-Schools. Today LIS courses are more and more have becoming multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in nature. In a country like India where the gap of information rich and information poor is still exists, it is libraries which are truly democratic can fill this gap, so that the library profession has to thrive with all hurdles. However, we should not blind for the happenings across the world with regard to LIS profession. Even the prestigious LIS Schools such as Indiana University’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS), Royal School of Library and Information Science (RSLIS) and many other LIS schools in the recent past have joined the iSchool Caucus or renamed themselves as Information Schools (iSchools) (See http://www.ischools.org) If we skim through the domain of faculty of this I-Schools one may wonder that why computational linguists or people having interest in culture of information, history and data mining and semantic web and what not associated with I-Schools. This multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature that is driving the cutting edge research in content industry today. In this context it is very much inevitable for LIS professionals to understand the changing nature of content industry (as we all know library profession is very much part of it). MyDLIS (Mysore University Department of Library and Information Science) for many years has been at the helm in changing or modifying its curriculum to fit to the changing needs of the information industry time to time. In fact syllabus on computer technologies was brought into the MyDLIS curriculum way back in 1976 itself. Digital libraries, MARC, Dublin Core, Open Access initiatives, Unicode all these concepts were taught at the MyDLIS in 2002 itself. Dublic Core, DL, OAI and Unicode all these concepts were very much new to LIS domain at that time (at least in India). The Golden Jubilee Summit on “Information Unbounded: The Past, Present and the Future of Information Science” is very much needed for Indian LIS community that too for students and research scholars to understand where LIS profession is heading. The title itself is futuristic. Many of the speakers invited for the MyDLIS Golden Jubilee Summit are very much part of library and information profession. For example: Prof. Gio Wiederhold is involving in semantic web, Dr. Oard’s research interest is in the area of information access and retrieval, Prof. Mike Shepherd and Dr. Carolyn Watters interest in Web Indexing. It is a rare opportunity to hear the great stalwarts of information/content industry. MyDLIS for many years has invited speakers from different domain who have been involving in research on information organization, access and retrieval to address students and faculty (for example informatics Endowment Lecture series). MyDLIS is always at the forefront in understanding and addressing the issue of changing nature of LIS education. This has made MyDLIS always special for me. Why speakers from LIS fraternity from India are not invited for the Summit? There is sufficient answer in this posting, if we need further evidence today people who are talking of LIS profession is not only from LIS domain but from other domain as well. Prof. Ram Ramaswamy, former VC of University of Hyderabad (https://hcurocks.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/s-r-ranganathan/) is one such example. Subbaiah Arunachalam is also a very notable example. LIS Profession heading towards parasitic status?

Dear Professionals, This question in the subject of this posting is haunting me for quite some time. If we see the realities and status of LIS professionals, especially in our country I feel like endorsing this statement, although it hearts me a lot. Like our LIS, even the Space Science is interdisciplinary in nature and borrows principles and practices from other disciplines like Physics, Mechanical/Electronic/Computer Science…Engineering, Chemistry, Materials, Astronomy, etc. But see the status enjoyed by Space Scientists. We say that Library itself is like a University, a knowledge hub and so on. But many academic and research administrators undermine the relevancy of Library especially in the context of digital environment. Many University Librarian posts are vacant for decades in our country. In spite of having masters degree with NET/SLET library professionals are being paid a meager amount of 10 -20 K for temporary Project Assistants/Assistant Librarians as against >32 K for Guest Lecturers at universities. Many special libraries from national institutes like CSIR have Scientists-in-charge. While there is no dearth of jobs for LIS Professionals, good number of engineering colleges still pay only 8-10 K for a fresher and at the most 15 K for professionals with 3-5 years experience and most of them are not given any scale prescribed, many a times even to the Librarian. Few degree colleges treat Librarians as clerks. More than >50% PU Colleges have not appointed librarians and there is no surprise if we don’t find a library, except 1-2 cupboards of books in some colleges. While I don’t generalize the statement, I feel that to some extent we too are responsible for this situation. Many of us not only fail to equip ourselves with the required skill set to serve better in e-Resources era, but we don’t take the traditional service seriously and maintain library properly. Same is the case with many LIS teachers too. Inevitably we, the teachers and practicing librarians need to compliment each other’s activities like in Medical profession. I don’t understand why librarians should not lead major/minor projects awarded by UGC? It would be nice if the project team consists of both teachers and librarians, enabling the outcome or the product for implementation for bettering the services. Why not 62 years for superannuation of qualified university/college library staff? A good number of Departments of LIS in few countries have been either closed or converted as Schools of Information, etc. If we consider the recent announcement of an important event by an LIS Department towards commemoration of its Golden Jubilee as a clue, I think we in India also have started our journey in this direction. We invite speakers for thisthree day event only from disciplines like Management, Computer Science and Law with very less or no representation of LIS Professionals, giving a feeling that the host department too could not produce even one teacher or practicing librarian during its existence for 50 years, fit to be invited as speaker for this event. Yes, while I accept that we need to learn a lot from experts from other disciplines, let us not undermine our LIS profession. Unlike many other countries, DL initiatives especially at Institutional level in India are lead by LIS Professionals. Probably better understanding among LIS teachers and practiceners with consorted effort can bring laurels to our profession and negating the heading of this Lis-forum posting. Despite an exponential growth in the amount of digital content that is being created by individuals, there is a lack in preservation of these content and overall the digital archives. Long term preservation of digital archives, which hold a staggering amount of continuously changing variety of data, poses a whole new set of challenges altogether. Since archives serve the purpose of capturing the social memory, archiving will help us in preserving an important part of the present cultural heritage. Digital forensics has always been associated with the world of criminology. But in recent years, digital forensics has slowly emerged as a reliable approach for digital preservation, especially for authenticating, accounting and accessing data from the past. This colloquium discusses the importance of digital preservation and explores a set of tools and techniques, ethical policies and procedures that would help in implementing digital forensics in preservation of digital content. Although each one of the researchers actually works on a different research question, there are many common problems that most of the researchers face. The quality of a piece of research is a function of the quality of data, the data analysis tools employed and the way the research outcome is presented. Some of the questions that most researchers face are: - How does one go about selecting a research problem? - What is a hypothesis? How to formulate hypotheses? - What are the most appropriate methods for data collection and the relevant statistical tools / tests for data analysis? How to decide on the appropriate instrument for data collection and how to design one? How to analyze and present data? How to interpret data? - What is technical writing and what are the components of a good technical report / theses? How to present ideas in technical writing? Objectives of the Workshop The workshop aims at answering the questions stated above. The workshop faculty is drawn from a pool of eminent professors who have long and rich experience both as researchers in their own individual capacity and as research supervisors at the Ph.D. level. The workshop methodology will employ case studies to illustrate and explain in addition to lectures supplemented by slides and discussions. I assume that you have installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in your system and it is connected with Internet. Now: *Step 1: *First download the file at www.librarianguide.co.in/install_koha.sh *Step 2: *Wherever you keep the file, just give permission with following command. I assume the file is at */home/library* *root@nitr/home/library# *chmod +x install_koha.sh (press enter) *root@nitr/home/library# *./install_koha.sh (press enter) It will start installation. Just follow the instruction and provide necessary inputs. *Step 3: *After installation of everything it will open window with nano editor. Just change the port in Intranet (8000), save (ctrl+x).
