PAPERS WITH SHORTER TITLES GET MORE CITATIONS To William Shakespeare, brevity was the soul of wit. For scientists, it may be even more valuable, as conciseness seems to correlate with how frequently a research paper is cited. Adrian Letchford and his colleagues at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK, analysed the titles of 140,000 of the most highly cited peer-reviewed papers published between 2007 and 2013 as listed on Scopus, a research-paper database. They compared the lengths of the papers' titles with the number of times each paper was cited by other peer-reviewed papers- a statistic sometimes used as a crude measure of importance. As they report in Royal Society Open Science1, "journals which publish papers with shorter titles receive more citations per paper". Dear All, It was nice experience to share my thoughts at JILA conference, Ranchi. The topic was “Re-engineering Public Library and Academic Library Systems in India” many papers were presented with suggestions and how to improve the existing systems. Many issues were raised to Re-engineering the existing libraries like finance, laws etc. My view and some solutions was to adopt the open source/free solutions like Koha, DSpace, eprint, joomla, zotero, etc. as well as open access resources like open access journals/books etc. to overcome some of the problems without investing much amount on that, but i felt that awareness and training on the above cost effective /free solutions is major challenge. So the LIS departments must train the students about these resources during their course of study and assign some small projects on these free solutions. MLS programs need to ensure that students have a range of competencies, but that aptitude needs to be balanced with a progressive attitude (“can do,” “change agent,” “public service”). - Re-Thinking the MLS Begins with Recruitment. Neither a love of books or libraries is enough for the next generation of information professionals. Instead they must thrive on change, embrace public service, and seek challenges that require creative solutions. Attracting students with a strong desire to serve the public is critical. - Be Disruptive, Savvy, and Fearless. Through creativity, collaboration, innovation, and entrepreneurship, information professionals have the opportunity to disrupt current approaches and practices to existing social challenges. The future belongs to those who are socially innovative, entrepreneurial, and change agents who are bold, fearless, willing to take risks, go “big,” and go against convention. As noted by then-MLS Program Director Dr. John Bertot, the initiative serves as a complement to current discussions regarding the future of libraries, “As we rethink our information institutions and the roles that they serve in their communities, we also need to consider who the future information professionals are, their abilities and competencies, and how we prepare them for dynamic and evolving careers as community change agents.” Ms. Lindsay Sarin, MLS Program Manager, further commented that, “Our libraries, archives, and other information organizations are central to their communities, and we need our future information professionals who are ready and eager to take risks and support their communities in new and exciting ways.” Over the next two years, the iSchool will focus on curriculum redesign, continued engagement, and implementation. READING HABIT, A PRE-REQUISITE FOR WRITING SKILLS: LIBRARY SCIENCE HOD The habit of reading books is the basis for writing skills, according to A. Amudavalli, Head, Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of Madras. Workshop She was speaking at the two-day Regional Workshop on Scientific Writing. The event was being held under the auspices of the Department of Library Services, Christian Medical College, Vellore and the Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of Madras at the CMC campus here on Friday, Dr. Amudavalli said that in any type of writing, the ability to express one's thoughts clearly is very important. Reading is very important for this, but unfortunately reading has almost been forgotten nowadays, she said. The HOD of Library and Information Sciences said that knowledge of various subjects is one of the basic requisites of a librarian. The basics of various subjects including science subjects were taught during the different courses in library science. It is because a graduate in library science should be competent enough to work as a librarian in any type of library. A librarian can command respect only through his/her delivery and performance stemming directly from the skills that one had acquired during the course of study, she said. Words recalled Dr. Amudavalli recalled the words of late S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science, Documentation and Information Science who said that the job of a librarian is `to convey the right information to the right user at the right time'. She said despite all advancements in technology, there is no replacement for books and newspapers. This reinforces the larger role that librarians have to play in information transfer. The librarian provides personalised service to the users, she said. Thomas Kuriakose, Associate Director of CMC lighted the lamp and delivered the presidential address. Reg: Anti plagiarism detection tools

Dear all, We at University of Mysore have scanned about 450 PhD Theses using Turnitin and iThenticate plagiarism check tools. Thanks to UGC-INFLIBNET, particularly its Director Dr. Jagadish Arora and Scientist Mr. Manoj for making these tools available free for all those universities who have signed an MoU for Shodhaganga. Our experience endorses the views expressed by Dr. T. Shahab. These two popular tools cross check over 45 billion web pages, 337 million students’ papers and 130 million additional articles for similarity and return the results in seconds showing the matches. While we have little experience with URKUND software, its accompanying literature shows that it cross checks collection of 11.5 million student’s papers only. As is evident from its Website URKUND is used mainly in Swedish institutions, as against adoption of Turntin and iThenticate world over. We get a serious doubt that URKUND may be cross checking mainly Swedish student’s paper. More importantly URKUND doesn’t return the results immediately, but are forwarded to e-mail of administrator. Checking the texts put as image/ table and identifying water marked texts is also important for checking plagiarism. While this is possible with Turnitin/iThenticate, I have a doubt about URKUND about this capability. While the friendliness of the software is one of the criteria for selection, most important ones are other functionalities and databases or the content size used for cross checking the similarity, because very purpose of this sort tools and the exercise we do is to check plagiarism. Even by using Turnitin and iThenticate tools we will not be cross checking thousands of proceedings and Volumes of Conference Papers unless published by well known publishers and available on Internet. This being the case we should go for the ones covering more content for cross checking. Yes, cost is one of main factors for our concern. Individual universities would have shared cost either partially or fully depending upon the situation. Since UGC has mandated it and some State Governments like that of Karnataka have made it compulsory it should not be a problem for getting funds from universities authorities. Some of the universities and even engineering colleges have started charging students for Plagiarism check and issuing a certificate since it is mandatory. At this juncture since INFLIBNET has already gone for URKUND, either can use it or we can license Turnitin/iThenticate locally if we desire so. Those who have access to both can come up with their experiences of using both and help us in deciding the software in future. These are basically my personal opinions based on my experience and observation. WE need to have better evaluation and more discussion before we come to a final discussion. Sharing my experience with anti--plagiarism web tools

Dear All, I would like to share my experience with the LIS-Forum users regarding working with the anti-plagiarism web tools provided by Inflibnet. By a letter dated the 13th March 2014 issued under the signature of Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director Inflibnet various Universities who have been the signatory to MoU on Shodhganga were provided web access to the two popular anti-plagiarism tools- iThenticate and Turnitin. After certain initial hesitations regarding the implication of the anti-plagiarism verification for the doctoral scholars as well as the supervisors, the anti-plagiarism check was approved as mandatory for submission of a Ph.D thesis at Jamia Hamdard. The Central Library as the coordinator for anti-plagiarism started with the more famous Turnitin. But sooner we opted for iThenticate as it appears more users friendly. Incidentally, the all India survey carried at the behest of Inflibnet has found iThenticate to be the more favoured by the majority of users. Unfortunately, because of steep cost escalation by the service providers for the next year, Inflibnet had to cancel the renewal of these software. On 31st May 2015 the access to these tools was stopped. As the anti-plagiarism check has been made mandatory by the UGC, it was agreed in principle that the University shall purchase either iThenticate/Turnitin. A comparative statement of the features of these software revealed that whereas both of them shared the same database for cross check, iThenticate was costlier (25000 pages @$5860/- a year) than Turnit (@$5000/- for 100 user license plus 10 faculty and one administrative license where each user can upload up to 20MB, or, up to 400 pages). Meanwhile since July 31, Inflibnet has offered yet another anti-plagiarism web tool called 'URKUND'. Our initial working experience with this tool reveals that whereas it is similar to Turnitin in the matter of creation of courses and assignments, it lacks the analytical quality of iThenticate. I have doubt about the nature of academic/research database that Urkund uses for cross check. A communication to the Shodhganga seeking clarification about urkund has been also sent from our side. Still, we at Jamia Hamdard University are a new user. We request more responses from the users having on-hand experiences with Urkund. Thanks & regards, Dr. T. Dear Professionals,There is boom of e-Resources on the academic front andmostly coming from high profile publishers from West. There are certainadvantages of e-resources in particular E-books, on the other hand there aremany disadvantages. Academic Librariesare on the purchasing spree of acquiring e-books with substantial investment.It is observed that there are certain issues of e-books which are to beexamined. I have visited some colleges and universities for special lecturesand I have note some common grievances of e-book users.1. First and the foremost is that the “Suitabilityof Subject Content” (Syllabus in particular) with the curriculum in ouracademic institutions( Colleges and Universities). The student and teacheropinion is that nearly 60% of the content is not suitable for our coursecontent.2. In our universities, due to the admissionpolicies and procedures, the majority of students are from Rural background andwith medium of instructions in regional language3. The lack of computer literacy.4. The trend of “Copy and paste” will increase andthe attitude to “study” and “assimilate” will decrease.5. It is observed by me that in western libraries,the student use of Print is still higher, and they use their Lap Tops (connectivity is provided in the library) and make notes from printed books.6. What extent the Indian publishers arerepresented in the e-books acquired by our libraries under different consortiaagreements.7. What is the connectivity and IT infrastructureavailable to use the e-books in the libraries.8. Are we following the “IFLA” Guidelines onacquisition of e-resources.I think we must have a second thought on acquiring e-books,(textbook oriented) and find their suitability. There are certain advantages of e-resources, but originated mostly from the West. Ranganathan’s Five-Laws re-invented by OCLC for the world of e-Libraries and e- Learning!

Dear Sir/Madam, The report “Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting user behaviours, shifting priorities” brought out by OCLC is very interesting to read. The authors of the report have done extensive research to show us why Ranganthan’s classic work “Five Laws of Library Science” is very much relevant for libraries to thrive and success in meeting user’s needs in today’s technological driven information society. This report is also an eye opener for Indian LIS research community to look for inspiration and ventured into philosophical underpinnings of LIS domain. We must acknowledge OCLC for revisiting Ranganthan for showing the way for libraries to success in the 21st century. We Indian should have been at the forefront in revisiting Ranganathan’s works to inspire LIS community. But Indian LIS research community for no good reason has not been seen or taken up research seriously on Ranganathan’s works. It is worth mentioning that, it was Pauline Atherton Cochrane an American who revisited Ranganthan’s Five laws in 1970’s (see Putting Knowledge to Work: An American View of Ranganthan’s Five Laws of Library Science). Kathryn La Barre of University of Illinois has done a Ph.D., on Ranganthan’s Faceted Analysis and its application in organizing website or classifying web documents (see The Use of Faceted Analytico-Synthetic Theory in the Practice of Website Construction and Design). Now it is OCLC which is brought out a very significant report on Ranganthan’s Five Laws. It is a proud movement for Indian LIS community that S.R. Ranganathan even today is a revered figure in world LIS community. We must also ponder that why we Indian LIS community is not seen Ranganathan’s contribution very seriously as much as western LIS community is considering him for reviving or inspiring library community to chart out future course of action?
