Dear All, It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that a Three-day Intensive Workshop on Personality Development and Communication Skill was held at the University during 23-25 July and 10-12 September 2015 (repeat programme). It was organized jointly by IASLIC and Visva-Bharati Library Network for the benefit of the staff at the Library Network. The first two days were devoted to Written Communication (e-mail, texting, and other writing tips; e-mail etiquettes, five keys for effective writing, styles of clarity, strategy to cope with changes, ways to success) and Oral Communication (definition, types, barrier, how to develop positive attitude, how to get self-motivation, how to live with joy, how to follow leader and how to lead, storytelling for developing listening skill instead of mere hearing). Besides her presentations, the sessions contained interaction, painting, playing, acting, home work by the participants. User Awareness Programme on UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium at Visva-Bharati

Dear All, It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that a two-day User Awareness Programme on Access to E-resources under UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium was organized by Visva-Bharati Library Network at Central Library during 24 -25 August 2015, in collaboration with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad to promote the usage of e-resources as well as to provide a platform for discussion on issues related to e-resources. The user awareness programme was attended by 91 participants (33 Faculty, 14 Library Professionals and 44 Research Scholars). Nine aggregators/publishers presented their products. It was conducted in 13 technical sessions. The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice - Chancellor, Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta by lighting the lamp along with Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director, INFLIBNET, and Dr. V. K. Thomas, University Librarian. Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta, Vice-Chancellor, in his inaugural speech talked about the complex and widespread nature of VB libraries in Santinikeatn, Sriniketan and Kolkata (Granthana Vibhaga) and networking for better delivery of resources. Dr. Jagdish Arora drew a brief sketch of INFLIBNET. He highlighted existing and new ventures like ShodhGanga, ShodhGangotri, e-PG Pathshala, e-Acharya, OJAS, Institutional Repository, Vidwan, Soul cloud version etc. The valedictory function presided over by Prof. Swapan Kumar Datta, Pro Vice-Chancellor. Public libraries help children learn coding

Getting the turtle to move across the screen required her to break down big complex problems into small sequential steps. In other words, the nine-year-old girl was learning to code. She was one of about a dozen elementary school children gathered at a class called “coder time” for elementary and middle school kids. “Historically we’re the place that offers opportunities,” said children’s librarian Joanna Fabicon, who started the project. “I named it coder time because I would love coding to be as ubiquitous in libraries as story time." Libraries – the lands of hushed voices and dusty stacks – are transforming into computer science hubs for children. A new report by the Pew Research Center, “Libraries at the Crossroads <http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/09/15/libraries-at-the-crossroads/>,” finds that libraries are responding to the public demand for skills like programming and technology literacy, which are becoming increasingly important in the workplace. In the next five years, there will be a million more jobs than students <https://code.org/stats> nationwide. Coder Time began at the L.A.'s central library with a grant from the Eureka leadership program <http://eurekaleadership.org/>. To reach more children, Fabicon formed a partnership with the afterschool program L.A.’s Best, which rolled out the curriculum to 160 children at eight LAUSD schools. Technology advocates said these kinds of programs allow kids to become creators, rather than just consumers of media. When he first offered coding classes to kids, more than 200 signed up. “I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a 600 square foot room with 15 sweaty 12-year-olds,” he laughed. “But it quickly got very unpleasant and crowded.” According to Stone that’s a good problem to have, because the library helps put coding skills into the hands of kids who might otherwise not get them. There is no shortage of coding and game development camps, he said, “but they often cost $700 to $2,000 for a week, which puts it out of reach for a lot of families.” Libraries may also lower the bar for entry when it comes to gender and ethnicity. Friends: The mass migration from the Middle East and East Africa and the deaths of thousands of people are truly tragic. Luckily, several countries have come forward to take in many of those migrants. But for those still in refugee camps life continues to be uncertain. They need hope. They need to learn to adapt to their new surroundings. There are people ready to help them. One of them is a librarian called Mary Jones. I do not know if she was a librarian before. But now she is one of the finest. The Jungle library she set up is now talked about the world over. What did Mary Jones do? She set up a basic library in ramshackle shed put up at a refugee camp in Calais in northern France. What a great library it is! What kind of services she has thought of for the library all within a month! He saw few terms available to describe this diverse group of analytics, so he coined the word “altmetrics.” For practical purposes, the best-known definition of altmetrics, “the creation and study of new metrics based on the Social Web for analyzing and informing scholarship,” comes from altmetrics.org, <http://altmetrics.org/plosone> a website set up by Priem and three of his colleagues. Since then, others have questioned the definition and the methods of calculating altmetrics in various scholarly contexts. More than a decade earlier, changes in information technology and scholarly communication had made the idea of a set of web-based metrics for measuring impact a tempting proposition—not only for scholars but also for publishers, toolmakers, and librarians. However, Priem’s positioning of altmetrics as an alternative to citation-based bibliometrics created an immediate set of obstacles for the movement. Bibliometrics, originally defined as a set of quantitative methods used to analyze scholarly literature, have been around since the early 1960s. These measures are largely concerned with counting and tracking journal article citations. Because journal articles tend to cite other journal articles, the major providers of bibliometrics are closely connected to established indexers of scholarly journals, such as Thomson Reuters, Scopus, and the increasingly popular Google Scholar Metrics. *As librarians, we are natural leaders in the field of altmetrics…* In the STEM fields particularly, article-based productivity metrics are commonly accepted for purposes of evaluation and benchmarking. However, for scholars in areas that emphasize scholarly monographs over journal articles, such as the humanities, bibliometrics wield significantly less clout. The same goes for scholars whose research portfolios go beyond the bounds of traditional citation, such as the fine arts. Although the field of altmetrics may have been positioned originally as an alternative to the filtering systems offered up by print- and citation-based bibliometrics, both approaches seek insight from the quantitative analysis of information related to scholarly output and publication. This similarity has not, however, prevented occasional periods of tension between the two fields’ respective followers. As altmetrics have emerged and continue to grow and evolve, so too has the role that academic librarians play in supporting altmetrics, bibliometrics, and citation impact, from support to professional use to advocacy. It’s a familiar role. Impact factor, a measure of the average number of citations to recent articles in a given journal, was created as early as 1955 for use by librarians in making collection development and retention decisions. Libraries continue to bear primary responsibility for acquiring bibliometric tools, notably Web of Science, *Journal Citation Reports,* and Scopus, and training researchers in their use. Support for these tools extends to academic social networking, institutional repositories, and the web services CiteULike <http://www.citeulike.org/> and Mendeley <https://www.mendeley.com/>. The inaugural Reuters Top 100 survey, published on Wednesday, places Stanford University in top spot, reflecting its position as a crucible for new ideas at the heart of Silicon Valley. Stanford alumni have gone on to create some of the world's biggest technology companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Yahoo and Google. The top nine places are all taken by U.S. schools, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University ranked second and third. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) was 10th, while Imperial College London was the highest-ranked European in 11th place. Asian universities are a growing force in scientific innovation and have proved particularly adept at turning this into products, with South Korea -- home to rising tech giants such as Samsung -- scoring highly in patent approvals. South Korea has eight schools in the top 100 universities, while Japan has nine -- more than all countries bar the United States. China, however, had only one entry on the list in Tsinghua University, ranked 72nd. Policymakers and corporations alike rely on universities to convert publicly funded science into knowledge and ultimately new products that drive economic growth. But while academic innovation is lauded around the world, it is not easy to measure. ISAACSON PASSES ON LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS POST People close to the White House approached Walter Isaacson, author of the celebrated biography of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, about serving as the next Librarian of Congress, but Isaacson took himself out of the running, according to a source familiar with the situation. Isaacson, CEO of the Aspen Institute in Washington, was perhaps the highest-profile name circulating as a possible replacement for James Billington, who plans to retire from the Library of Congress after 28 years at the helm. The institution, which manages a vast national collection of some 160 million works, has developed a reputation for digital backwardness, and librarians and tech advocates have urged the White House to pick someone capable of being a modernizing force. Isaacson declined to comment. ..Other names still under consideration include University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann; John Palfrey, the head of school at Phillips Academy and the former head of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society; former American Library Association President Carla Hayden; Susan Hildreth, former director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency; and Deborah Jacobs, director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Global Libraries Initiative, according to multiple sources. Also in the mix are Archivist of the United States David Ferriero and Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive. Palfrey said he was surprised to hear his name was being floated and called the Librarian of Congress post "one of the greatest jobs in the universe," but declined to comment further on the search. Hildreth said that she had not been contacted by the White House, and Ferriero declined to comment. Other names on the list did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Billington, a Reagan appointee, announced in June that he would be leaving the job at the start of 2016, giving President Barack Obama an opportunity to hire someone to usher the Library of Congress into the Internet era. The Library has, under Billington, struggled to meet its technology needs, such as digitizing the nation's cultural archives and supporting the U.S. Copyright Office, which is housed at the Library and is at the center of debates between the tech and entertainment industries about digital content. The White House didn't immediately comment. Asked about the search last week, a spokesperson last week declined to comment on personnel matters. Isaacson, who formerly served as chairman and CEO of CNN and editor of Time magazine in addition to writing numerous books, is seen as popular in Washington and someone who could survive a political process; the Librarian of Congress post requires Senate confirmation. Read full report : http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/2015/05/01/library-systems-report/ "Interest in discovery services continues to build among academic libraries as they strive to optimize the impact of their investments in scholarly electronic resources, in balance with their print collections. *EBSCO reported 2,634 new subscriptions to EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and 8,246 total *installations. EDS finds use in academic libraries as well as public, school, and special libraries. Unlike other providers of index-based discovery services, EBSCO has not developed its own resource management product but instead focuses on integrating EDS with any ILS the library currently has in place. Integration partnerships are in place with more than 30 ILS providers globally. Examples include Encore Duet, an integration of EDS into Innovative’s discovery product compatible with Sierra or Millennium, and integration of EDS with SirsiDynix Enterprise. Work has recently been completed to enable libraries using OCLC’s WorldShare Management Services to apply EDS as the patron interface. Indian Maps to Soon Hit the Web: NATMO By IANS Published: 10th September 2015 04:52 PM Last Updated: 10th September 2015 04:52 PM KOLKATA: The National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation (NATMO) is developing a digital library and within a year people would have access to an e-version of Indian maps, the department of science and technology announced here on Thursday. "NATMO is developing a digital library and the proposal is under consideration by the DST. It will be implemented soon," Ashutosh Sharma, secretary in the department of science and technology said during the 60th anniversary celebrations of NATMO. The organisation is engaged in compilation of the national atlas of India in Hindi, English and other regional languages, as well as preparation of thematic maps based on socio-economic, physical, cultural, environmental, demographic and other issues. Sharma said thematic maps would be available in digital version within a year. This also includes launch of web applications of location-based services of the maps prepared by NATMO. In addition to providing technology foresight to NATMO, Sharma said a committee of scientific experts would be formed to develop a scientific vision. "The committee would serve as a scientific interface between DST and NATMO to decide in which direction we should be moving. It will be formed of experts in the area and who also have vision about the future. It will help sensitise them to digital platforms and shift technologies in that direction," Sharma said. According to NATMO director Bhoop Singh, maps and data will be put in the open-access domain within a few months. But scientists themselves are generally wary of it, because it can be edited by anyone, regardless of their level of expertise. At a meeting in London last week, the non-profit website's volunteer editors reached out to scientists to enlist their help and to bridge the gap between the online encyclopaedia and the research community.
