TCS is happy to announce an Internship programme for Library & Information Science MLIS (or equivalent) students (full-time/regular) in its Information Resource Centres (IRC) across India. This programme can be availed as part of curriculum either in the summer break or during the course period. It will last for a period of 2-3 months and will include a stipend. The interns will have the opportunity of practical learning of tools and techniques of information service during their tenure. Internships are open at the TCS branches given below. Aspirants are required to have minimum 60% marks in all examinations taken, from 10th Standard onwards, to be eligible. A limited number of candidates will be selected through a test and interview. Applications and CVs of candidates must be forwarded by Institutions in the form of nominations or recommendations at least 2 months prior to the commencement of internship. The programme offers pared-down Internet services on mobile phones, along with access to the company's own social network and messaging services, without charge.The service, earlier known as internet.org, has also run into trouble in other countries that have accused Facebook of infringing the principle of net neutrality - the concept that all websites and data on the Internet are treated equally.Critics and Internet activists argue that allowing access to a select few apps and Web services for free would put small content providers and start-ups that don't participate at a disadvantage."While disappointed with the outcome, we will continue our efforts to eliminate barriers and give the unconnected an easier path to the Internet and the opportunities it brings," Facebook said in an emailed statement. On Monday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which had suspended the free Facebook service pending a policy decision, said Internet service providers would not be allowed to discriminate on pricing for different Web services."Essentially everything on the Internet is agnostic in the sense that it cannot be priced differently," TRAI chairman Ram Sevak Sharma said at a news conference.Although the new rules will also have implications for plans by Indian telecom operators to make money from rapidly surging Web traffic through differential pricing, Facebook's campaign turned the spotlight on the social networking giant.Free Basics is part Facebook's ambition to expand in its largest market outside the United States. Only 252 million out of India's 1.3 billion people have Internet access."We are delighted by the regulator's recognition of the irreversible damage that stands to be done to the open Internet by allowing differential pricing," said Mishi Choudhary, a New York-based lawyer who led an online campaign against Facebook.Facebook shares were down 2.7 percent at $101.30 in early trading on the Nasdaq amid broad weakness in U.S. markets. What is difference between National digital library (NDL) and discovery tool?

Dear All, Today i attended Video conference on National digital library project by IIT Kharagpur. I observed the main focus of the entire project was to collect the METADATA from various sources including commercial publishers/aggregators like IEEE. I remember during trial access for some discovery tool like ebsco, ProQuest etc. concern vendors were asking for all Metadata of Catalogue, Institutional repositories and the list/detail of materials subscribed so that they can put into their server and we can search (Metadata) with more speed all in a single point but will get access to full text if we have subscribed the resources. So our NDL (https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in/home.php?nav=search&part&koha%20automation&&page=1…) seems to be discovery service which will provide Metadata searching of various type of materials and referring to original source with no guarantee to access in full text just like searching on Google. A Nice document of discovery tool i found here (http://www.niso.org/apps/group_public/download.php/14487/future_library_res…) for your ready reference. I personally feel our NDL project should focus on those resources which is available in Open Access like thesis in Sodhganga, National digital library, ETD/IR at NITRKL etc. because Digital library demands single point solution of full text rather than referral service. Therefore i would like to summarize that it is very good Project but should focus on full text single point solutions used by highly qualified scholars as well as a common citizen living in a remote village else i have doubt on Return on Investment (ROI)? As far as training is concern it will be good if NDL people will personally visit the site and implement the DSpace. The only functionality it had was making a phone call. In a span of 30 years, the cell phone industry has taken the world by storm. However, this change was not easy. A great deal of innovation has gone in. Cellphones have constantly been the subject of innovation. Modern cellphones are not just for making phone calls. They have messaging, radio, camera, GPS and a plethora of applications! Today, life without cellphones is unimaginable. The innovation in cellphone industry was so powerful and dominating that it pushed several 'dedicated technology producers' such as camera manufacturers into the days of penury. That's the power of innovation! While it took three decades for cellphone to change the way we communicate, there's another 'technology' which has done pretty much the same in half the time as much. In 1998, Sergey Brin and Larry Page published a research paper titled "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine". Nobody, at that time, had even imagined that this technology would become the most dominating technology in a span of 15 years! Google did it! With constant innovation, an umbrella of user-friendly services, it has gobbled up whatsoever little competition it faced. Take-a-seat and Drone -------------------------------- Innovation is not just confined to information and communication technology. People are innovating anything and everything with their creativity and for their convenience. He cited "take-a-seat" and book-delivering drone as the instances of innovation. "Take-a-seat" is a smart chair technology developed by Jelte Van Geest. The smart chair, upon swiping the library membership card, follows the user wherever she/he goes. These self-chargeable chairs also arrange themselves in a group to create a 'lecture hall' appearance when a lecture organizer needs them. Speaking of the role of 'start-ups' in innovation, Mr. Ananda said Start-ups have more scope for innovation. A video of an Australian start-up which has designed a drone which delivers books to designated locations using GPS technology enthralled the audience. Deliberating on the affordability of technology, 'Raspberri Pi', the low-cost, tiny computer, developed for the purpose of learning, got a special mention. Taking lessons from innovations happening around, information professionals may emulate the same in their arena. The fact that the information services revolve around the three aspects - Content, Community, and Services, is indisputable. But, it does matter how we innovate in them. Mr. Ananda drew up a model innovation path for information professionals: - Visualizing library as a platform to innovate - Monetization of services - Mobility of content - Being futuristic The lecture was followed by an interaction by the audience. Dr. B T Sampath Kumar, Chairman of the Department introduced the speaker and welcomed him. Rupesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, apprised the audience on the objectives of the special lecture series. Confusion on NDL (National digital library) and Sodhganga ?

Dear All, I am very much confused about the National digital library project (NDL) at IIT Kharagpur and Sodhganga of Inflibnet. Main reason is i came to know NDL is going to collect the Metadata from DSpace/Eprint repositories of various IITs, NITs etc. and provide a common platform to search all repositories. My confusions are: 1. How metadata searching can be considered as Digital library without full text? 2. Is it a Kind of Union catalogue of Digital repositories? 3. Sodhganga is nicely managed by Inflibnet under the directorship of Dr. Arora than why this type of things was not integrated with the same which is of national importance? 4. What will be the other contents since its a huge project involving crores of rupees? 5. Recently INDEST and Inflibnet consortium has been merged so is there any chance of merging Sodhganga and NDL in future if yes than why not today? 6. One Koha project under NMEICT was started having cost around 1.8 crore but final out put i do not know just seen Union catalogue of some libraries and Inflibnet is also doing same work now by collecting records from various libraries? Kindly clarify me if anybody is having clear ideas and differences among them.
