Dear all, I'm sharing this blogpost here, hoping hat more people may benefit (and not just Koha users) from it: "Easy peasy way of automating remote backup on Google Drive for your Koha database" This post discusses how to automate your Koha ILS’s MySQL database backup on to Google drive and send out an email when it is complete. It shows how you can take advantage of Google Drive’s 15GB space for free (Dropbox only gives you 2GB on the free access) and do it all from the command line and save the much needed RAM for your Koha server rather than waste it on the GUI, which is also a security risk. It was the year 2014 when it was quenched by a single word ‘QR Code’. I became more familiar as I found it suitable to be used for different purposes. Here, in next few seconds, we are going to discuss more about QR Code and its uses in libraries for better services. Curious to know? You are supposed and must be. QR Code……an abbreviation of ‘Quick Response Code’ was first introduced in 1994 by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in Japan in automotive industry. Based on my study through different resources, I understood ‘QR Code’ as an advanced version of barcode machine-readable optical label which contains the information about any item and uses four encoding modes (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary and kanji) to efficiently store data. QR Code consists of black squares which are arranged in square and can be read by any image processing device or scanner. Jack is regarded worldwide as one of the most influential figures in Information Science and the History of Science. Having gained a DPhil in Astronomy from New College, Oxford, Jack moved to the University of Leicester in 1965, where he went on to become Professor of Astronomy and History of Science. His career, and his renown, in astronomy were officially recognised when he had a planet named after him Asteroid 4600 Meadows. Jack came to Loughborough University in 1986 as Professor of Library and Information Studies in the then Department of Information Science. He held a number of senior managerial roles at Loughborough: Head of Department (1986-1990), Dean of Education and Humanities (1992-1995) and finally Pro Vice-Chancellor (1995-1996). As well as being an inspirational teacher Jack authored many seminal publications in the Physical Sciences, History of Science and Information Science domains, most notably *The Origins of Information Science*(1987). He retired from the University in 2001 but always maintained strong links, popping in regularly to see how things were going and helping out wherever he could. Jack was not just a huge academic star; he was also a friend and mentor to all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. He was always encouraging, supportive and cheerful, offering wisdom and insight as well as warmth and humanity. He and his wife, Jane, are remembered warmly as gracious hosts to all members of the department at the wonderful annual summer afternoon tea parties they held in their beautiful garden. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences go to his wife and other family members. -- I am sure many of our colleagues in the LIS fraternity would have benefited by reading the books of Prof. Meadows. What they may not know is that he came all the way to India for two weeks to help young Indian science journalists hone their skills. Prof. Meadows came to India in the late 1980s along with Mr Martin Redfern of BBC World Service to help the Indian Science Writers Association host two 5-day workshops on communicating science to the public (meant for science journalists). These workshops were held at NISTADS and IISc, thanks to the generous support of Prof. Ashok Jain and Prof. C N R Rao. Their visit was financially and logistically supported by the British Council. Prof. Meadows was an ardent lover of cricket. When he was in Delhi, I asked him if I could do anything for him as his host. He said he would like to meet the great cricketer Lala Amarnath whom he had seen play in England when he was a schoolkid. Thanks to help from Mr Chandran, former MD of PTI, I could take Prof. and Mrs Meadows and Mr Redfern to the residence of not only Mr Amarnath for a hour-long chat over drinks but also to the bungalow of the great Nawab of Pataudi for tea. And Mrs Chandran invited the Meadows and Mr Redfern home for some authentic Indian food. Prof. C K Ramaiah of the Pondicherry University did his doctoral work under the guidance of Prof. Meadows, and a few years ago he had invited him to a conference at Pondicherry. Generally, this question comes in mind when I finish one task and I believe this question must be taking place in every professional’s mind. Library Automation: This mechanism has reduced the work load of every professional in this digital era but now-a-day, the biggest problem is to choose the right library automation software. Actually, there are many good library automation software available in the market (Commercial and Open Source both). In my opinion, those libraries which are in primitive stage, they must go ahead with Open Source Technology such as koha, NewGenLib, and Evergreen etc. which supports International Standards and later, if you are not satisfied with the current software’s functionality, very easily you can switch over to the Commercial Software or any other with all your bibliographical data in same condition. Then, system allows user to photocopy the document up to the limit already deducted from user’s account. In-case, user does not have sufficient balance then user can recharge it. 9. User Education Program: Every month, a user education program can be organized on library services and its resources. This service is very useful for making the students aware about library resources, how to use these and also about other services. This program generally must be provided according to the user’s requirement. 10. Demonstration: Most of the library users sometimes don’t understand the nature of resources available in the library especially e-resources. A demo can be very helpful for all the users who access e-resources. 11. Out and About Service: This service can be unique in nature in order to develop the library collection and especially services. Library staff can choose a particular day and can meet library users’ directly and collect the feedback. This feedback can be used for the improvement of library service with effective way. Â The draft representation on the matter prepared by the Academic Library Association is given below for your kind comments and uniform and collective action:The Academic Library Association is an importantassociation of qualified library professionals in India.Â We would like to submit our remarks and somesuggestions for the kind consideration of the Govt. of India and UGC whilefinalizing the UGC Scheme 2016. The UGC Schemes 1986, 1996 and 2006 have brought lotof merits to the academic system in India.Â But, it has few demerits which affect the Library management, Libraryservices to the students, teachers and researchers and the Career AdvancementScheme to the librarians.Â Few examplesare noted below: About 80% of the University Librarians in India (100% inKerala) is vacant. Not even a single Assistant Librarian or Deputy Librarian orUniversity Librarian is directly appointed in any university or college inKerala.Â In Kerala, there are about 600Govt. colleges (arts and science, poly technique, medical, nursing, dental,etc.). On implementation of UGC Scheme, Govt. has upgraded only 12 posts oflibrarians to the UGC Cadre.Â To these 12posts itself, promotion from junior posts of Librarians is continuing.Â As there is no benefit to Junior Librariansin receiving this promotion on the verge of retirement, out of these 12 posts, 04posts are vacant. In universities also, the Junior Librarians arepromoted as Asst. Librarians at the age of about 50 years.Â While teachers in universities will retire at60, the librarians will retire at 56 years as they are categorized asNon-teaching, along with clerks, typists and peons.Â Modern library profession is based on ICTs, webbased tools and techniques, digital libraries, strategic management, etc.Â The librarians entering the UGC Cadre atabout the age of 50 years or on the verge of retirement, they loose technicalcompetency, enthusiasm and motivation.Â This is adversely affecting not only libraries, but the entire system ofeducation and research in the country. The library profession became a non-attractive or non-dignifiedjob in India especially in Kerala and talented students do not prefer to enter theprofession.Â This is reflected in the libraryservices and utilization of high value information resources. Several court cases piled up in High Courts and SupremeCourts in India regarding the implementation of UGC Scheme for Librarians, lackof clarity on several rules, retirement age, parity issues etc. though the UGClibrarians are equally qualified as teachers. Similar to teachers, librarians in universities andcolleges are engaged with three duties; (i). teaching, (ii). research or (iii).extension.Â They are engaged with theduties like; imparting knowledge through library and information service(indirect teaching), direct teaching and extension. They are also entrustedwith academic administration, that is, management of library and informationsystems and services. The qualification for a teacher or librarian in UGC isPG in concerned subject (here Library Science) with 55% mark and NET conductedfor teachers/librarians. Though the mode appointment, pay scale and CareerAdvancement Promotion for teachers and librarians are same in UGC Scheme, alluniversities in Kerala and many universities in India are classified thelibrarians under non-teaching category of clerks, typists and peons.Â This is highly unscientific and affects the motivationand morale of librarians and also the quality of education, teaching, learningand research. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR),the controlling agency of agricultural universities in India has included a paper âResearchMethodologyâ (1+1 Credit Course) for all PG and PhD students.Â About 33% of the content of this paper wasLibrary Education, Library Science, Library Service, Information Retrieval,etc. Â During 2009 onwards, this coursehas been re-structured into two papers: i.Library and Information Service (0+1 Credit); and ii.Technical Writing (1+0 Credit) Because of the importance of the librarians inteaching, research and extension, all University Librarians of AgriculturalUniversities in India are Ex-Officio Member of the University Academic Council. The designation of qualified librarians in researchagencies like DRDO, ISRO, CSIR, KSCSTE, etc. is âScientistâ.Â Librarians in CBSE, ICSE and similar schoolsare in the Teaching Category.Â Manyuniversities and states have brought the librarians under the teaching categoryby re-designation.Â But, it is better to havea uniform pattern. Though the librarians are custodians and providers ofhigh value knowledge resources, their categorization under Non-Teaching,resulting in the automatic exclusion of them from the academic and researchcommunity.Â This is a great loss to ourstudents, teachers and researchers because there is a natural gap between them.Â As large quantity of digital as well asconventional information resources are available in the college and universitylibraries, proper library education to students and teachers is extremelyessential to effectively utilize these resources. In many states there is a general notion thatlibrarians are unqualified and incapable.Â In Kerala, there are about 60,000 âLibrariansâ and former librarians inPublic Libraries. There is no need for any formal qualifications to them.Â Their âsalaryâ is Rs. 1,200/- per month.Â The public image and status of UGC Asst.Librarians, Deputy Librarians and Librarians in Universities and colleges aresame as that of these non-qualified librarians, because the number qualified librariansis negligibly small as compared to the non-qualified librarians. Moreover, there is a Govt. Rule in Kerala topromote âLibrariansâ with few years of experience as âPart-Time Sweepersâand again as âPeonsâ after further few years of experience.Â So, we can imagine the status of librariansin Kerala, whether they are in UGC Cadre or State Govt. Cadre. Similar situation prevails in many otherstates. Based on several brain stormingsessions, workshops and seminars conducted on the matter, we suggest thefollowing for inclusion in the 2016 UGC Package in order to get maximumpotential of what invested in higher education sector: i.Â Re-designate UGC Librarians in universities andcolleges same as that of other teachers (Asst. Professor / Associate Professor/ Professor â Library Education). The âUniversity Librarianâ may beRe-designated as âDirector of Librariesâ similar to âDirector of Researchâ, âDirectorof Extensionâ, âDirector of Academic & PG Studiesâ, âDirector of PhysicalPlantâ, etc. in Agricultural Universities. ii. The librarians in universities and colleges shouldbe non-vacation teachers as in the case of all teachers in agricultural universitiesand colleges. iii. Include one Compulsory Non-Credit Paper in thesyllabus of all PG and PhD Courses, with Title, âAdvancedLibrary Education and Informaticsâ (0+1 Credit, Practical course); 2 hours/week(1 semester). The total workload for the above course can be limitedto 04-06 hours per week by combining different batches of students to offer thecourse either in 1st Semester or 2nd Semester and theexisting staff can manage the class without additional staff. Dear Professional and Academic Colleague Do not published and business with Lambert Academic Publishing. I and my friend published many books with LAP for last years, but never received any royalty fee even one single penny. The number of online sales that LAP reports to me with 0 copies (0 credit) is far different from the internet sales. Right now I really know that LAP Lambert is a spam and a fraudulent publishers. I and my friends regret to have published our books with LAP Lambert. Please other people as many as possible to stop publishing a book with LAP Lambert. Don’t let this worst publishers benefiting of the authors. Many masters and doctoral students get sucked into the Lambert scam. They desperately need publications early on in their career. A book sounds like a nice choice, + one free full-color copy, in hard-copy. Plus the advertising on Amazon with a small cut of the profits (apparently never paid out). Which junior budding scientists would refuse this offer? Publication of master and PhD theses in academic journals and then recycled in “academic” books published by LAP constitutes the biggest fraudulent scam in publishing history, and ironically with the biggest growth and profits. Not to mention it constitutes self-plagiarism in its worst form. The questions we should be asking is, how can this be legal in Germany? Or is the predatory publishing model indicative of something wider taking place in the dark world of academic publishing? I am making this comment to warn everyone away from anything that comes out of this dreadful shambles of a publishing house. Avoid it like the plague. I have been burned. Save yourself. Sometimes, professional finds difficult when he/she comes across different kind of books such as single author, two authors, three authors, more than three authors, editor, corporate author, meeting name and so on. As a result, if professional is not through with rules, may commit mistake in cataloguing as well as in data entry. Only few libraries in the world use CC and some have switched over to other systems. Many Depts. of :LIS have stopped teaching CC. But the theory on which CC is built is ever green even in Internet era. Unfortunately development of CC especially after Prof. M.A. Gopinath came to a stand still. She was mentioning that the syllabus was outdated and that LIS departments are not equipping students with what is actually required on the job. She was lamenting about abundant LIS graduates with no proper employbility skill set. She was derisive of LIS faculty STILL teaching Cataloging, Sears Subject Heading, UDC, CC etc. For the uninitiated, Colon Classification (CC) published in 1933 is the first faceted or analytico-synthetic library classification developed by *Padmashri S R Ranganathan, who is known as Father of Library Science in India*. The name CC comes from use of colon (:) to saperate the facets Personality, Matter, Energy, Space, Time (PMEST). Colon Classification is now in its 6th Edition and published by Ess Ess Publications <http://www.essessreference.com/servlet/esGetBiblio?bno=000374>, Delhi, India. I for one immediately protested on hearing the suggestion for blanket ban on above listed topics. I responded that I was sure faculty is doing a tremendous job in difficult situation surrounding them with indifferent administration; unsupportive UGC/government policies; lackadaisical students and nonchalant working professionals blaming them. Although, I agreed with her partially and told her as much. I always feel that all the above subjects overview should be provided, so that students know history and various classification systems and that indepth practicals and practical exams were not ‘practical’ (pun intended) as where would they apply! But I support teaching CC for following reasons 1. Because an Indian had introduced it to the world and we as librarians from India should be proud of it! We should ensure that CC is not lost in obscurity in sands of time! 2. Jobs are available (National and International) 3. Another reason provided by Dr I R N Goudar is its application in the Internet era! On hearing this she demanded to know where CC was implemented and how many jobs were available. I knew only a couple of libraries that implemented CC as S R Ranganathan had worked in these places – initially as University Librarian at Madras University (1924-1944) followed by Banaras Hindu University where he worked as librarian and professor of Library Science (1945–47) and later again as Professor of Library Science in University of Delhi (1947–55) so had implemented CC in all those libraries. I Googled to find if there is any list available online but unfortunately did not come across one! We as library professionals are taught to document our information and make it available. We always do it in work sphere but have never applied it in the Library Science feild by listing various aspects of it and making it available online for reference and posterity. So I posted on IndiaLibraries <http://www.indialibraries.wordpress.com/> WhatsApp group and the members responded immediately and listed out the following Libraries in India which follow the CC.
