The Royal Society Publishing update: With over 360 institutions worldwide signed up to a Royal Society Read & Publish agreement in 2023, thousands of researchers can publish open access articles in the Royal Society journals with no fees at the point of acceptance. With this the number of open access articles increase rapidly as more authors fall under transformative agreements. By the end of 2022, the Royal Society published the highest proportion of open access articles yet at 61%. The publisher launched a new scheme to reward peer reviewers with article processing charge discounts and they have extended content syndication partnership with ResearchGate with the addition of over 100,000 Royal Society journal articles to the platform. There has been further increase in the number of institutions moving to Read & Publish in 2024 and to begin flipping their four main hybrid research journals to gold open access within the coming years, we are expecting the similar response from maximum number of institutions in the coming years. Status of the Million Books of India project

Friends, Canada has launched a wonderful digitization project. Please see: https://internetarchivecanada.org/2024/07/01/internet-archive-canada-launch… . We in India did start one way back in 2000 when IISc's Prof. N Balakrishnan (known as Balki), with the support of the redoubtable Prof. Raj Reddy and President Abdul Kalam, initiated the Million Books Project of India (see his YouTube talk on The Digital Library of India and its Journey). Does anyone know of the current status of the project? I would like to know about it. The National Digital Library of India maintained by IITKh appears to be essentially an education portal largely focused on textbooks and examinations (at all levels). There are several other digitization projects in India, many specializing on content in individual languages such as Srujanika in Oudiya and Project Madurai in Tamil. It will be a good idea for an enterprising student to write a doctoral or master's thesis on digitization efforts in India. Any takers? With best wishes, Arun

Important Update Regarding Recent Spam Message

Dear Members, I am writing to let you know about a recent incident on our discussion list. It has come to our attention that a message containing threatening and inappropriate content was posted by an individual as lis-forum-owner(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in. The message claimed to have access to sensitive information and made fraudulent demands. As you know, LIS-Forum was moved to a hosting platform called MailmanLists about a month ago. After contacting the MailmanLists support team about the spam email, they informed us that the issue was linked to a problem with the server's DNS, which allowed this spam email to bypass our moderation process. The IISc network team manages the LIS-Forum server's DNS records. We recommend that all members remain vigilant and avoid engaging with any suspicious emails or links. You can access it at www.ijiweb.net https://www.ijiweb.net About IJI Many databases, directories, and indexes capture the global research output. While many journals are indexed in more than one index, some journals are not attracted by any index or database. Institutional journals, including some in-house research journals (particularly those that publish research papers), are excluded from directories and indexes. The research published in these journals represents local interest and Indigenous research and reports significant findings. However, these journals remain invisible despite their acceptable contribution. The IJI captures such invisible research and makes it available on its platform. We do not measure or judge the quality of papers for inclusion but use a few minimum quality thresholds before entering them into IJI. IJI is an article-level index of research journals published by institutions such as colleges, universities and laboratories. Friends, Canada is coming up with a wonderful (open access) digital library. Please see: https://internetarchivecanada.org/2024/07/01/internet-archive-canada-launch… . We in India did make some efforts, witness the Million Book project (spearheaded by Pfof. 'Balki' Balakrishnan of IISc ) and the national digital library at IITKh. Commendable as these are, we are nowhere near what we need to really have. Prof. Robert Darnton, historian and former librarian at Harvard, wrote and spoke about the origin of the Digital Public Library of America. That is the kind of digital library we should aim for in India. That could also double up as a national level repository of all our scholarly output, past and current. Europe has Europeana. Our conference wishes to explore the ways that bibliometrics is being used in the wider academic universe, and to help those who use bibliometric tools to navigate that universe. We particularly welcome proposals aligned to the overall theme, but also on other administrative, organisational, and especially ideas on practical sessions related to bibliometrics. The metric is not confined to drawing numbers and analysing. Selecting a metric depends on synthesizing multiple directions and evidence-based data. Producing benchmarks and standards in science and technology evaluation and implementing them with real data mark the full-fledged system. Quite recently, we have witnessed the emergence of new metrics-based models aiming to reflect the growth of science and technology. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2024) conference concerns how many metrics may involve assessing different aspects of science and technology, which are best expressed using different approaches. Besides the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, STMetrics will host several workshops and tutorials related to the conference’s theme. The workshops provide participants with a friendly, interactive atmosphere for presenting novel ideas and discussing their application of metrics in Science and Technology Systems. The tutorials aim to enable the participants to familiarise themselves with theoretical and practical aspects and the application of metrics.
