A Guide to Institutional Repository Software
by Mailing List Manager 27 Oct '03

27 Oct '03

Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 17:25:30 -0400 From: Dr. Ramesh C. Gaur <rcgaur(a)tifr.res.in> Apologies for cross-posting Universities and research centers throughout the world are actively planning the implementation of institutional repositories. Such planning entails policy, legal, educational, cultural, and technical components, most of which are interrelated and each of which must be satisfactorily addressed for the repository to succeed. The Open Society Institute intends this document to help organizations with one facet of their repository planning: selecting a software system that best satisfies an institution's needs. An institution's system needs will be driven by its content policies and by the procedures required to implement those policies. A well designed and carefully planned repository program can function well with any of the systems discussed here-but none of these systems can help a poorly designed or inadequately planned repository succeed. Therefore, where necessary, the notes to the System Feature & Functionality Table (Section 2.2) attempt to explain the relevance of system technical features in the context of a repository's broader planning, design, and policy framework To view the guide, please see: http://www.soros.org/openaccess/software/ best wishes, Ramesh PS. Dear Friends If we always think that we would require OFFICIAL resources, I don't think we can do much towards better-ment of our profession. Should not we take it like our religion...?, Is it too costly today to have personal computer at home with Internet..? I am sure, most of you are either having it or have planned to have it (IF NOT FOR YOU, FOR ATLEAST YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN). Can we spare some time for the profession at home..? Can we spend something for the profession like we do for our other daily life...? If we look our profession as a mission, I think we would stop blaming availability of resources. Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2003 17:01:45 +0530 From: Sukhdev Singh <sukh_dev(a)hotmail.com> Let me also suggest a step. I would like to call it as "STEP ZERO" (Initial). CONCREATE STEP ZERO: Select and make an email discussion list as Official Discussion List of LIS Indian Community. There is a need for Indian Library and Information Science Community to exchange and discussion various issues related to the profession and work. It may be possible if we encourage all the professionals to subscribe to one email discussion group. This may be designated as official discussion forum. [Official here should mean the common voice of the community]. People should be encouraged discuss and debate (more useful) various issues" [email groups are meant for that only]. It should not be a low volume and "unidirectional" group. Moderation should be minimal and rare [ to stop virus attacks, marketing emails personal attacks etc]. There can also be web/email conferences and delibrations. Over and above there should be BELONGINESS AMOUNG THE COMMUNITY. There could also be ranking of the community members based on some criteria but definately based on contribution towards this virtual community. Further, I propose LIS-FORUM (Promoted by Dr T.B Rajashekar) be this official email disscussion group, because [perhaps] it is almost a decade old now. BTW, have anybody noticed the wonderful work being down by http://www.infolibrarian.com . Only thing they have not done is "that they do not bost off who they are?" [ I am in no way related to it]. New Global Resource Website For ICT Literacy (fwd)
by Mailing List Manager 21 Oct '03

21 Oct '03

Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 10:39:21 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Here is something I received a few days ago. I thought you might be interested. Best wishes. Arun New Global Resource Website For Information And Communication Technology (ICT) Literacy Published on on Sep 11, 2003 Source: ictliteracy.info Readers are invited to access the new website - www.ictliteracy.info - being developed through the collaboration of a global partnership intended to serve as a resource for business, education, and policymakers - all stakeholders - in closing the gap between the rhetoric and reality of what is required to efficiently and effectively take advantage of information and communication technology (ICT) in the global economy. This website represents a global effort to promote universal ICT literacy. The "digital divide" in ICT literacy remains a reality that has prompted the partners involved in this effort to collaborate on actions at the national and international level for bridging the digital divide. They recognize a priority need to achieve ICT literacy worldwide - thus fostering "digital opportunity" for the children and the workforce of the new millennium. This website provides a rich, centralized portal for the repository of ICT Literacy resources, highlights innovative efforts and partnerships promoting ICT Literacy, and facilitates the interaction between researchers, business, government and educational segments. New surveys, studies and reports on ICT literacy will be presented on the site. Readers and participants in the field are invited - encouraged - to share information, collaborate for strategic efforts, present leading research and thinking in the area of ICT literacy, and encourage global leaders to dialogue on important issues and consensus building efforts. We encourage strategic planners, futurists, and thought leaders to share with our audience their "out of the box" thinking and their innovative, radical ideas. Thank you all in advance for sharing this information with other stakeholders as well as participating in this important undertaking. Dr. David E. RE: Evaluating Website Sources

Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 22:17:53 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Thanks very much Jorge. I am circulating this to many key people in India with a request to spread the word. Regards. Arun -----Original Message----- From: Jorge Gallardo Rius To: Subbiah Arunachalam Sent: 10/17/03 9:26 PM Subject: Evaluating Website Sources Evaluating Website Sources By Jorge Gallardo Rius Many students in Honduras use the World Wide Web to research homework topics. Sometimes they take the content directly from the web and insert it as their own work. Other times they take parts of the work and insert it into their own, often forgetting to quote the source. At best, they use it as reference material to write their own work but often do not indicate the source. Some teachers only require references from printed sources. Teachers in all academic areas should be concerned because often they won't know if they are evaluating the student's work, a respectable outside source or a quack's eerie sense of humor. That is why many schools are now using website evaluation worksheets as part of the homework completion material. By not using them, schools are missing the opportunity to fulfill important educational standards. Using a website evaluation worksheet helps students recognize authorship and helps them learn to respect intellectual property rights. Standard 2 of the North American Education Technology Standards (NETS) and other international standards place much importance on learning to use technology resources responsibly. It is important that students learn to indicate website references, using the URL, as well as printed references. Secondly, a good website evaluation worksheet will guide a student to properly evaluate a website and distinguish "good" sources of information from "bad" ones. This helps student develop their critical thinking abilities. Not everything in the World Wide Web is informational and students must learn to select respectable sources of knowledge or, at least, beware possibly tainted information. In a sixth grade science class, a teacher asked her students to search websites and find three important discoveries made possible by space travel. She gave students a list of websites which included NASA, CNN and other good sites. She included other sites to test her students. One was about space aliens and had links to "Elvis lives" websites. Another presented a detailed "scientific" analysis proving that squirrels are aliens. In social studies classes, website evaluation worksheets help students identify compromised opinions. Another sixth grade class did a project on the Middle East about the role religion plays in regional conflicts. By recognizing the URL and the author's resume they were able to determine what his biases were likely to be. This data was part of filling the website evaluation worksheet. Both of these projects, and others reviewed for this article, were designed by teams made up of class teachers and computer lab teachers, and all used website evaluation sheets to document the student's research and webquest results. Webquests are web pages that gather different resources and make them easily available for student projects. The computer teacher prepares them in conjunction with the regular class teachers. Students, specially younger ones, find it easier to simply click on the screen and access predetermined contents. Access to search engines, such as Google or AltaVista are also included for more advanced students who want to be creative. Website evaluation worksheets document the student's navigation through the web and are part of the project completion requirements. If you are interested in sample website evaluation worksheets to implement in your school or furthur descriptions of these and other similar projects, write to me at the e-mail listed below. I have several lesson plans for different topics and grades available in PDF format (Acrobat Reader is also free and easy to download and install in your computer). Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 22:12:15 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Thanks very much Peter for circulating this much needed Guide. I am forwarding it to key people in India without whose whole-hearted support the Open Access movement cannot take off or succeed in India. Regards. Arun -----Original Message----- From: Peter Suber To: SPARC-OAForum(a)arl.org; boai-forum(a)ecs.soton.ac.uk Sent: 10/17/03 8:35 PM Subject: [BOAI] Guide to Institutional Repository Software OSI is pleased to announce the release of the Guide to Institutional Repository Software. The guide describes the five open source, OAI-compliant systems currently available. As many institutions are developing repositories, OSI thought it would be helpful to produce such a guide so that each institution could select the software best suited to meet its needs. Included in the guide is a brief narrative overview of each system followed by a summary of the systems technical features. The guide will be updated as additional systems are developed.
