Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 11:09:36 +0530 From: Satya Ranjan Sahu <srsahu(a)darya.nio.org> Dear members, Editing in a PDF document, which is captured by "Page Capture", increases the file size tremendously of the original. Is there any solution to keep the size in control? We have scanned few articles from the print documents. After converting the image as editable PDF using "Abode Page Capture" the size found to be reasonable. But when the PDF document edited using the "touch text tool" or "capture suspect" of Adobe Acrobat, the size increases. Please let me know the solution to keep the file size reasonable. Teledensity
by Mailing List Manager 12 Nov '03

12 Nov '03

Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 09:43:08 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Here is a comparison of teledensity in selected Asian countries. "The teledensity in Bangladesh is one of the lowest in the region. According to latest statistics (ITU), Bangladesh has 0.79 phones for per 100 people whereas it is 3.94 in India, 4.4 in Sri Lanka, 2.9 in Pakistan, 1.34 in Nepal, 24.98 in China, 49.9 in Malaysia and 6.17 in Indonesia. More than 70 per cent of the population of Bangladesh do not have telephone access," says Nur-ul Alam, Melbourne, Australia. Clearly China and Malaysia are way ahead of India. As India cannot afford telephones for all individuals/familieswe for a long time to come, we should encourage community owned telecentres, such as the ones established by M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in the villages of Pondicherry of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu. We should also also encourage voice over IP and community radio. Arun [Subbiah Arunachalam]

The way out of this WEB (in literal sense) seems to be only through planned organization, using faceted techniques, of the burgeoning sources of information. The role of XFML i.e. extensible faceted markup language gets defined in this context. The markup language allows one to relate the topics of concern and to provide a meaningful way of accessing information. This seminar on XFML will try to explore its nuances and suitability for defining a web of well-placed, closely-knit information threads. Venue : DRTC Classroom Date : 14th November^ 2003 Time : 2 P.M. All are cordially invited Co-ordinator Dr. ARD Prasad DRTC Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore

Date: Sun, 9 Nov 2003 14:55:13 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> An editorial by Gopalraj (gopalraj(a)vsnl.com) on Open Access, published in 'The Hindu' is available online at: http://www.hindu.com/2003/11/08/stories/2003110801121000.htm ---------- Dear Stevan: I shall strongly recommend publication of your article (in response to the Hindu editorial by Gopalraj) in Current Science. I am marking a copy of this mail to Prof. Balaram, Editor, Current Science. I also recommend to Current Science to publish a brief article by you (and Peter Suber if he agrees) once in two months, that is one in four issues. Dear Friends: Generally I hate to 'forward' but this one from ScDev.Net is too good to miss out. Vyasamoorthy, P Dear all, By dramatically reducing the cost of disseminating information, the Internet is revolutionising science publishing. (www.scidev.net/open_access) This comprehensive guide is your essential overview to the implications of open access initiatives on access to scientific information in the developing world. It includes : Up-to-date news, features and opinion articles on the issues surrounding open access and scientific publishing Descriptions of (and links to) current open access initiatives Access to free scientific literature Links to key reports Comprehensive events section with the latest meeting proceedings and future events. An opportunity for you to comment and give your views You may also be interested in this week's editorial by our director David Dickson on 'Communicating science in the electronic era', which raises many of the key issues in the debate. Indian CD Products
by Madhuresh 07 Nov '03

07 Nov '03

Dear forum members, I would like to inform you about a website http://www.indiancdproducts.org/ which is a Bibliography of Indian CD Products. This website is a part of National Center on Publications on CD-ROM (NCPC), a center set up by NISSAT, DSIR at FITT and IIT Delhi. Through the website, one can search CD-ROM by Title, Keywords and Category. Union Catalogue of various organizations is also maintained and facility to search by Organization Name and Title is also available. Search results contain the Title, Description, Publisher/vendor and their address. One of the objectives of NCPC is "To systematically procure all CD-ROMs published in India and on India. (Except software, games, music and purely entertainment CDs and reproduction of foreign CD Publications for the Indian market) and build up a National Repository of CD-ROMs". Keeping in mind the requests made by forum members to get a particular CD, I believe this resource is not being used extensively. The site statistics also confirms the same (almost 11,300 visitors in past 3.5 years). It may be because of lack of awareness or improper marketing of website. However I didn't get the information about number of titles available with the centre, it is systematically procuring all the CD's published in India and also creating a Union Catalogue of CD's available in various Library and Information Centers; so it can be a good starting point for searching a particular CD Title. PURL for IndLibra; Re: [LIS-Forum] Wanted Voluntary Group for IndLibra
by Sukhdev Singh 06 Nov '03

06 Nov '03

IndLibra Website, which is to be developed shortly now has Persistant URL i.e. http://purl.org/net/indlibra Which means that Service Providers may change in future but the above URL would remain same. ["A PURL is a Persistent Uniform Resource Locator. Functionally, a PURL is a URL. However, instead of pointing directly to the location of an Internet resource, a PURL points to an intermediate resolution service. The PURL resolution service associates the PURL with the actual URL and returns that URL to the client. The client can then complete the URL transaction in the normal fashion. In Web parlance, this is a standard HTTP redirect. The OCLC PURL Service has been strongly influenced by the active participation of OCLC's Office of Research in the Internet Engineering Task Force Uniform Resource Identifier working groups. There is nothing incompatible between PURLs and the ongoing URN (Uniform Resource Name) work. PURLs satisfy many of the requirements of URNs using currently deployed technologies and can be transitioned smoothly into a URN architecture once it is deployed." Wanted Voluntary Group for IndLibra
by Sukhdev Singh 05 Nov '03

05 Nov '03

Dear Friends, The Bulletin Board for Indian Library and Information Community i.e. IndLibra, has received a good response. I was not expecting this kind of response. Now this is the point where the community spirit is required. I fully understand that single person can not take the community to the desired position. I therefore want to transfer the ownership and responsibility to a voluntary group. Let us call this group as Voluntary Group for IndLibra or VGI for short. This Voluntary Group for IndLibra would be the sole owner of IndLibra and would be looking after IndLibra Discussions (http://indlibra.myforum.net/) and would also be putting and managing content of the related website of the IndLibra (http://in.geocities.com/indlibra/) The User Id and Password would be disclosed to this group and it would symbolise the end of my indivitual responsibility and ownership. Please come forward and give your Names at the email indlibra(a)yahoo.co.in . I am expecting people like Prof. Shalini, Dr. Rajashekar, Dr Vyasamoorthy, Dr T.V. Prafulla Chandra and others to come forward. If it is successful, then IndLibra can purchase its own space on some web host instead of depending upon free-service providers like myforum and geocities. There please come forward in large numbers and give your Names at the email indlibra(a)yahoo.co.in .
