It is an efficient and easy-to-use site and extensively archives published scientific literature. Sci-Hub violates many copyrights owned by journals. But it is also a vast repository of open access, out-of-copyright, and public domain material, which a blanket injunction would disable. For scientists stuck at home in 2020, Sci-Hub has made literature accessible without navigating institutional VPNs. For journalists and the public, given the obscene per article charges levied by journals, Sci-Hub is the easiest and often only option." .....Sci-Hub’s “piracy” benefits the very people who create that content. This is the opposite of the situation in the creative arts where “pirating” music or films deprives creators of royalties; scientific authors get no royalties, and they and their funders want their work to be shared freely. The future of library is constantly challenged by fast-changing media and technologies. Driving and shaping this future largely depends on the preparedness to innovate for developmental changes at all levels, from micro to macro. To encourage innovative practices and to promote innovative culture in libraries, Informatics, as part of its annual Library Technology Conclave (LTC2020), has instituted the Informatics Innovation Award, beginning LTC2021. There will be two awards, one each for the following two categories of libraries: Category-1: Universities/Educational Institutions offering Ph.D. & post-Doctoral programs; Research Institutes. Category-2: Schools, Colleges and Public Libraries – (Includes Professional Colleges like Medical, Engineering & Management etc. and under-graduate colleges offering bachelor’s degrees in science, Commerce Arts and Humanities This award shall be announced on 30th January 2021, the last day of the conclave, following a case study session on Innovation in Libraries presented by nominees short-listed by the Committee of Juries for this award. The curious case of Sci-Hub.

The pathetic note by Vineet Kumar on the Sci-Hub is appalling. In countries where the scholarship is poorly funded or there are budgetary constraints every other day- to keep pace with the phenomenally expensive demands of the publishers, Sci-Hub free access, no matter the way it disseminates information, is perfectly reasonable. It is a step closer to the democratization of information; free access to publicly funded research. The advocates of open access who otherwise should have defended it are siding with the ones whose business is to trap knowledge behind paywalls. it deeply worries me about the future of research in countries like ours. The scholarship is being produced mainly by the universities and is given to third parties for free, and then pay that party to access our own research. There are these terrible problems that require an investigation, different perspectives to deal with them, but unfortunately, we have people who cluelessly are endorsing the monopoly. In our decadent library systems, that failed to give ubiquitous access to their ostensible subscribed resources during the pandemic, it was Sci-Hub, that provided free and uninterrupted access to everyone in their comfort zones. The only issue if there is any, is the issue of copyright, it is time for the policymakers to find alternative ways if they are unhappy with the Sci-Hub, rather than banning it for good. Dear Sir/Madam, Sci-Hub is helping global researchers in an unprecedented way. Without this website we would have not been able to access global scholarly literature. Even today most of the scholarly publications are paywalled content. Alxandra Elkabayn the founder of this revolutionary website has time and again put forth her side of story how she struggled to access scholarly literature for her project work in her country. This story is similar to India and most of the Asian countries as well. How many of us individually or our institution have access to major scholarly literature. Even today many of the top notch universities in India have not been able to provide access to major databases leave aside access to full-text articles. Research communication was limited for learned societies for long after two world wars and emergence of industrial and information society it was exploited commercially. learned societies without any commercial interest have sustained the scholarly publications for so long. Now researchers involving in the production of knowledge have to pay to access their own content or knowledge. And we should also not allow scholarly communications to be in the hands of few commercial publishers. We must also remember Aran Swartz who gave away his life for making knowledge free for all. With same ethos Alexandra Elbakyan has also created Sci-Hub. The Sci-hub statistics has shown that India is one of the top countries in terms of number of downloads through Sci-Hub. Why we were using this site extensively, because of lack of access to scholarly literature. The efforts of Aran Swartz led to the invention of creative commons which is helping authors to make their research open and already Alxandra Elkabayn's Sci-Hub has also pushed the major publishers to adopt open access initiatives or making certain contents open for users. At least for this we must thankful for Alxandra Elkabayn and Sci-Hub. Sci-hub instead of stifling the scientific publishing has expanding its horizon more towards open science. The fruits of open science is very much visible during this pandemic crisis as well.
