I understand that British Libraries in India have well set Weeding policy. You may try to get help from Mr Goud of British Council library Hyderabad or others. I am in particular interested in knowing the criteria being used for weeding out in different libraries in India, like a. how do we decide what to weed ? b. how much should we weed ? (what percentage of library collection and frequency) I would also like to know if there are any rules or procedures specified by the government about such processes by libraries in India, or in any particular state (with reference to audits and accounts). Since my library comes in the science domain, policies and criteria of libraries within the S & T domain would be of great help. An article had appeared in The Hindu on 24 June in appreciation of this. Its a round the clock library and functions without the virtual prescence of a librarian. All the library activities are carried out mechanically without human interface. I request all professionals to comment on this kind of library. Its presently in Singapore. Regards, Thejasvi.

Old Search Engine
by Mailing List Manager 23 Jun '04

23 Jun '04

Date: 22 Jun 2004 13:21:14 -0000 From: farooque <mfarooque(a)rediffmail.com> It's a very interesting article published on June 21,in NewYork Times by Katie Hafner. Old Search Engine, the Library, Tries to Fit Into a Google World Katarina Maxianova, who received her bachelor's degree in comparative literature from Columbia University in May, took a seminar last year in which the professor assigned two articles from New Left Review magazine. She found one immediately throug Google; for the other, she had to trek the library tacks."Everyone in class tried to get those articles online," she said, "and some people didn't even bother to go to the stacks when they couldn't Google them."For the last few years, librarians have increasingly seen people use online search sites not to supplement research libraries but to replace them. Yet only recently have librarians stopped lamenting the trend and started working to close the gap between traditional scholarly research and the incomplete, often random results of a Google search."We can't pretend people will go back to walking into a library and talking to a reference librarian," said Kate Wittenberg, director of the Electronic Publishing Initiative at Columbia University. Ms. Wittenberg's group recently finished a three-year study of research habits, including surveys of 1,233 students across the country, that concluded that electronic resources have become the main tool for information gathering, particularly among undergraduates."We have to respond to these new ways," Ms. Wittenberg said, and come up with a way to make better research material available online. That means working with commercial search engines like Google and Yahoo to make ever more digital-research materials searchable. Undergraduates like Ms. Maxianova and her classmates are not the only ones conducting research from their computers. Faculty members also do it."One of the rarest things to find is a member of the faculty in the library stacks," said Paul Duguid, an information researcher who will teach a class this fall at the University of California, Berkeley on judging the authenticity of information found on the Web. In the Columbia survey, 90 percent of the faculty members who responded said they used electronic resources in their research several times a week or more. Nearly all said it was a valuable resource. While the accuracy of online information is notoriously uneven, the ubiquity of the Web means that a trip to the stacks is no longer the way most academic research begins. "The nature of discovery is changing," said Joseph Janes, associate professor and chairman of library and information science at the University of Washington. "I think the digital revolution and the use of digital resources in general is really the beginning of a change in the way humanity thinks and presents itself."A few research librarians say Google could eventually take on more of the role of a universal library."If you could use Google to just look across digital libraries, into any digital library collection, now that would be cool," said Daniel Greenstein, university librarian of the California Digital Library, the digital branch of the University of California library system."It would help libraries achieve something that we haven't yet been able to achieve by ourselves," Dr. Greenstein said, "which is to place all of our publicly accessible digital library collections in a common pool."The biggest problem is that search engines like Google skim only the thinnest layers of information that has been digitized. Most have no access to the so-alled deep Web, where information is contained in isolated databases like online library catalogs. Search engines seek so-called static Web pages, which generally do not have search functions of their own. Information on the deep Web, on the other hand, comes to the surface only as the result of a database query from within a particular site. Use Google, for instance, to research Upton Sinclair's 1934 campaign for governor of California, and you will miss an entire collection of pamphlets accessible only from the University of California at Los Angeles's archive of digitized campaign literature. --------------------------------- Farooque, IBM Global Services (India) Pvt Ltd. Databases for Agricultural Research in India
by Mailing List Manager 21 Jun '04

21 Jun '04

Date: Mon, 21 Jun 2004 15:35:13 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Friends: Sub: Braianstorming Session on Databases for Agricultural Research in India. In association with the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, we at the Bioinformatics Centre of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation are holding a one-day Brainstorming Session on Databases for Agricultural Research in India in New Delhi on 11 July 2004, 10.00 - 15.30. The purpose of the workshop is to decide on the databases to be developed in India. About 5-7% (depending on the database one uses) of the world's literature on agriculture and related areas is produced in India. It will be a good idea to have them all available readily. For this reason, we propose that we discuss the following databases: 1. A Research Output Database - This is a bibliographic database of all of India's literature ouitput in agriculture, horticulture, veterinary science and fisheries science. Right now this information is scattered over several databases, mostly produced outside India, such as CAB Abstracts. 2. A Full-text database of All Indian Research Papers - This could be either Interoperable Institutional Archives, each institution maintaining its own papers, or a nationwide centralised Archive, say maintained by NAAS. 3. A Database on Research Projects - As different agencies support agricultural research and different institutions perform , a regularly updated database of projects will be useful. This database will also be helpful in identifying experts in different specialties and research fronts. Such a database assumes special importance in the context of current developments in biotechnology and bioinformatics. Ideas on other useful databses are welcome. Needless to say that all these databases will be electronic and readily accessible in the public domain. Attendance at the brainstorming session will be by invitation only. Invitees include eminent researchers, information scientists and specialists in information systems and database production. The workshop will be held at the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, located between the National Physical Laboratory and Todapur (on the road from Hotel Siddharth at the east Patel Nagar-Pusa roundabout going to Indrapuri). Because of limited financial resources, we will not be able to cover the travel costs of outstation participants. However, we will provide a day's accommodation and local hospitality to outstation participants. We will be grateful for your suggestions on who should be invited to this event. Please send your suggestions to my colleague Mr Senthilkumaran, Associate Director, Informatics, MSSRF at <senthil(a)mssrf.res.in>. Fax: 044 2254 1319. Regards. Yours sincerely, Arun [Subbiah Arunachalam]

It increases its capacity to 1 GB storage limit and 10 MB message limit. Previously it was 5MB and 1 MB respectively. Now we can send photo albums, music files and larger attachments. Besides we do not have to worry about deleting mails regularly to keep mail box free. The other day Yahoo went the same way providing 100 MB storage limit. But that's meant for those who have yahoo.com account. This is really good. I wonder what a mere announcement can do! Google is yet to open its GMail for the general public. Thanks S. M. Shahabuddin

In addition to volunteering, we hope that readers of this list would "buddy" up with a novice user from your library so that we have feedback from both experts and novices. If you are interested in testing the library database, please send an email to library(a)who.int Please place "library database tester" in the subject heading. We need to know Your Name and if possible your "buddy" novice user's name and details Expert (librarian/information specialist) or Novice Country of Residence (where you will access the library catalogue) Mother Language Many thanks, Tomas Allen WHO Library Further details Testing will run through the month of July. You will only be asked to respond to 10-15 simple questions that should take no more than 15 minutes. We also hope that you can assist in obtaining feedback from the your "buddy" novice tester. About the library catalogue The WHO Library and Information Networks for Knowledge (LNK) provides comprehensive library and information services on WHO-produced recorded information in print and other media. WHOLIS is the World Health Organization library database available on the web. WHOLIS indexes all WHO publications from 1948 onwards and articles from WHO-produced journals and technical documents from 1985 to the present. Many of WHO publications are available in full text pdf format through the library database. This can be viewed at http://dosei.who.int/. We encourage you to test the current database before July. If you have problems accessing this database please contact Ms Helen Heathcote at heathcoteh(a)who.int _________________________________________________________________
