Thanks , I'm also aware of this , BCI Publication alias Book Shoppe from Bangalore also was present in that world book fair. And mostly they don't charge more than the book price ,if you are aregular customer.Rather will provide some discount if possible. -----Original Message----- From: G. K. The directory published by National Book Trust during World Bookfair, 2004 has listed all the suppliers, who participated in the fair, along with the names of publishers they represent. Many publishers from US are not represented in India. I wonder whether there is any supplier to import books published by ALA. If there are no authorised stockists or representatives, then postage will be too high as mentioned by Mr.Chandra. Barnes and Noble, whom I met recently in US are willing to supply books to Indian libraries if the business offered is US $5000/- per year. They also offer about 20% discount. Search. This follows a deal between the OAIster Project, which was set up by the University of Michigan, US, and Yahoo!'s Content Acquisition Program (CAP). OAIster offers information that links to hidden digital resources, such as the complete contents of books and articles, technical reports, preprints, white papers, images of paintings, movies, and audio files of speeches. OAIster retrieves these by tapping directly into the collections of a variety of institutions using harvesting technology based on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. The OAIster service currently provides access to three million harvested records describing and pointing to these resources, which are created and hosted by 267 research institutions around the world. The deal with Yahoo! opens up these resources to a wider audience, because many of the scholarly collections included in OAIster were not previously indexed in popular Web search services. Collections available through OAIster include: the arXiv.org Eprint Archive (an archive of physics research); Carnegie Mellon University Informedia Public Domain Video Archive; Ethnologue: Languages of the World; Library of Congress American Memory Project; and Caltech Earthquake Engineering Research Laboratory Technical Reports. http://www.researchinformation.info/news.html#jun10 Thanks S.Gunasekaran

Dear Mr. Chandra, The vendors from Bangalore will ask extra charge if the book is brought by courier. I suppose he has mentioned the courier charge. You may please ask him the book should come on ordinary shipment, and not by courier . I'm sure he will not be charging more than $40 rather the vendor would give discount also. Please check once again. should lis-forum allow commercial vendors as members?
by Mailing List Manager 02 Jul '04

Thanks. = Vyasamoorthy, P Dear All, Please see postings of: Rajendra Babu, Maduresh Singhal, Mukesh Anand = quoted below. I have no dilemma on this issue. We should allow all who are likely to = benefit librarians' community and promote (I would not say protect) our = interests. After all we do depend upon vendors for supply of books = periodicals & documents. What is wrong if they join and get to know our = problems, perspectives and feelings? Things might change for the better. There are many occasions in Lis-Forum where requests for sourcing old = books, info on RFID, info on certain software etc came up; I have = forwarded them individually to suitable vendors for action. Enquirers = have benefited. If library suppliers are part of the forum they could = respond directly to individual's requirements -- if answering via forum = may be looked upon as 'commercial' activity. Moreover, we, in VIC act as providers of information, literature = searches, documents etc to our customers by procuring the same from = other sources including libraries, commercial book sellers, publishers = and online sources. As we act as intermediaries we have interests of = librarians (as we are librarians) and that of vendors as we are vendors = too. I do not find anything bad, unwelcome, un-holy about commercial = activities. We should shed this inhibition of allowing commercial = fellows into our fold. Government Institutions still have this "Us" and = "they" attitude strongly entrenched in them. This must go. However when = one section of the society tends to unnecessarily exploit the other to = their undue advantage then that has to be checked. Date: Fri, 2 Jul 2004 15:34:25 +0530 From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Friends: Let us hope that many higher educational and research institutions in India set up their own interoperable institutional archives/repositories soon. We at MSSRF had organised two three-day workshops in early May and 48 participants took advantage of the workshops. Please see Current Science dated 25 June 2004 for a report on the workshops. Later this month Dr Rajashekar at NCSI-IISc is organising a three-day workshop for INDEST member institutions. Dr D K Sahu [dksahu(a)medknow.com] is running a discussion list for the faculty and participants of the MSSRF workshops. The faculty and participants of the Osmania University workshop and the NCSI-IISc workshop are invited to join the list. Holding workshops is one thing and actually setting up archives and populating them is another. I wish all the participants and faculty of the Osmania University workshop great success in setting up their own institutional archives. Best wishes. Arun [Subbiah Arunachalam]

Microsoft enhances MSN search engine
by Mailing List Manager 02 Jul '04

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: 2 Jul 2004 05:05:58 -0000 From: farooque <mfarooque(a)rediffmail.com> To: Mailing List Manager <mailman(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in> Subject: Microsoft enhances MSN search engine Microsoft Corp. today plans to roll out enhancements to MSN Search that collectively represent the most significant upgrade in the search engine's history, the company said in a statement late yesterday. The improvements include a revamped layout to give the Web site a cleaner, simpler look and to more clearly distinguish between results generated organically by the search engine and results that appear because they are paid-for ads, often called sponsored results. Moreover, the search box in the home page will feature a pull-down menu to let users choose whether they want to query MSN Search's Web index, its news sources collection, a selection of the Encarta encyclopedia contents or stock quotes, among other options. MSN Search's performance has also been improved, as has the relevance of its query results As part of the revamp, Microsoft has decided to put its paid inclusion program on hold for now. Under the program, Web site owners pay to have their sites included in the MSN Search index. Search engines have been criticized for engaging in this practice, which detractors say artificially populates an index and thus skews the relevance of query results. Popular search engine Ask Jeeves Inc. last week announced that it was canceling its remaining paid inclusion program. Microsoft described MSN Search's upgrade as the biggest since it was launched in 1998, but added that the enhancements are "initial steps" in a massive push into the search arena. The companys goal is to eventually deliver a search engine that provides direct answers to queries, Microsoft said. To days upgrade is part of a $100 million investment by Microsoft to develop its search engine technology. Along these lines, Microsoft beginning today will let users test-drive a next-generation search engine that it is developing and plans to launch within the next year. A link to the search engine, which is still in its very early stages, is located at http://sandbox.msn.com. Microsoft executives have said recently that their vision for the search segment includes the ability to search not only the Web, but also users' PCs and other sources of information. The Internet search market has become attractive in recent years thanks to search engines' practice of matching ads to individual searches, making the ads highly relevant to the information a user is searching for. For example, a vendor of sporting equipment may pay a search engine to run its ad whenever someone searches for keywords such as tennis, football or soccer. Advertising tied to keyword searching was the fastest-growing and the biggest of all U.S. Internet advertising categories in 2003, according to a report published in April by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and conducted independently by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Keyword search revenue made up 15% of online ad revenue in 2002, and jumped to 35% in 2003. The rest of the 2003 U.S. Internet advertising pie was made up of display advertising (ad banners) with 21% (down from 29% in 2002), classifieds with 17% (up from 15% in 2002) and rich media advertising with 8% (up from 5% in 2002), according to the report. Internet advertising for all of 2003 reached just under $7.3 billion, up nearly 21% from 2002. Google Inc. leads in search engine usage both in the U.S. and globally, according to recent statistics from market researcher ComScore Networks Inc. About 35% of Internet searches in the U.S. in February 2004 were done with Google. Yahoo Inc. came in second with 30%, and Microsoft's MSN was a distant third with 15.4%. Worldwide, Google accounted for 43% of all searches, followed by Yahoo with 31% and Microsoft's MSN with 14.1%, according to ComScore. --------------------------------- Farooque, IBM Global Services (India) Pvt Ltd. Yahoo! links to research resources
by Mailing List Manager 01 Jul '04

01 Jul '04

Yahoo! links to research resources Electronic research materials such as technical reports and preprints are now available through Yahoo!

Monkey Tool from Google
by Mailing List Manager 01 Jul '04

01 Jul '04

---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: 30 Jun 2004 09:03:39 -0000 From: farooque <mfarooque(a)rediffmail.com> Students and developers at Google Inc. have jointly created an open-source tool designed to better predict the effect on real-world Web site performance if changes are made to things like network infrastructure. Called Monkey, the tool first captures data from actual client sessions, inferring various network and client conditions -- what its creators call the "monkey see" portion of its work. It then attempts to emulate those conditions for server tests -- a process called "monkey do." Monkey is aimed at helping solve a dilemma of Web testing: Trying out network or server changes on even a small portion of actual user traffic is risky, but simulations are often unrealistic because they don't accurately reflect users' network conditions, said Yu-Chung Cheng, a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego, who worked on the project during an internship at Google. Cheng presented a paper about Monkey yesterday at the Usenix Annual Technical Conference. Cheng admitted that the tool, which is optimized for Google's specific search application, might not be as accurate at predicting server response for other types of applications. In response to audience questions, he said Monkey also doesn't attempt to model how user behavior might change as server response speeds or slows (for example, more search requests might come in if server response improves). "In the end, we believe it is unrealistic to build a generic one-for-all TCP replay tool," the paper, "Monkey See, Monkey Do: A Tool for TCP Tracing and Replaying," concludes. "But it is possible to build replay tool[s] for specific applications." Source code for the tool is available at http://ramp.ucsd.edu/projects/monkey/. --------------------------------- Farooque, IBM Global Services (India) Pvt Ltd. INDICATORS OF PUBLICATIONS
by Mailing List Manager 30 Jun '04

30 Jun '04

Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 22:18:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Sadasivan KP <kps31147(a)yahoo.com> Dear Lis-Forum Members, The Impact Factor of journals/publications and Citation Counts of papers are well known indicators of their quality/acceptance. Despite the current debate worldwide on its acceptance / reservations, these indicators are still widely accepted by the peers, professionals and funding agencies, etc. , presumably due to the absence of an effective alternative mode of rating. Now a new concept is emerging - as seen publicised and promoted by certain publishers and authors : An Indicator based on the frequency/amount of downloads of a paper ! For instance, the international journal " Biotechnology & Applied Biochemistry" (Publisher : Portland Press on behalf of IUMBM) has widely publicised in their website as follows: ' Top 50 Downloaded Papers: The Papers listed below are the 50 most frequently downloaded Papers for the 12 months to the end of May 2004...' (The list contains HTML Full Text & PDF downloadable options too) The details can be accessed at URL : http://bab.portlandpress.com/bab50.htm This has triggered a debate among the scientists (of my Lab) in favour of and against the concept of "Downloading as an Indicator on the quality of Papers". (Incidentally, the second and third highest downloaded papers happened to have been authored by one of our own Scientists!) I seek the comments/views of our professionals, especially the biblio/sciento-metricians . Hope it will be helpful to some level. Here is a summary of the criteria suggested for weeding serials collections. The items are in no particular order. 1. usage statistics 2. currency of material 3. physical condition of journals (age/bound/unbound) 4. completeness of holdings- short runs are better candidates for weeding 5. shelf space occupied vs. use of periodicals 6. overlaps with microfilm 7. support of the curriculum -is the subject still taught? 8. availability of full text in databases 9. stability of database (JSTOR & Project Muse vs. EBSCO) 10. availability of title elsewhere 11. whether the journal is indexed 12. ILL requests 13. faculty input 14. best practices from subject specialist 15. recommendations in Magazines for Libraries by Bill Katz for subject coverage 16. items for preservation/storage dated 1900 and previous 17. historical value for research Thanks to all of you who responded. Date: 28 Jun 2004 07:06:32 -0000 From: Rajesh K Patil <rajeshbcd(a)rediffmail.com> Hi, It's a good suggestion but one should note that the British Council Libraries are not subject to Indian system of Audit procedures. In general they have a zero growth policy i.e. if a library adds 1000 titles in a year, the same number of titles are withdrawn. As you are based in New Mumbai you can contact the British Council Library in Mumbai personally and discuss the matter in detail. First and foremost the consent of the Management and the Internal and External Auditors need to be obtained. Developing and implementing internal library policies for weeding will not be cumbersome. It can be based on certain factors viz. : - Obsolete title - Superseded titles - Usage statistics - Damaged books Regards.
