Library Automation software

Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 21:36:21 +0530 From: Jai Haravu <haravu(a)newgenlib.com> To: rafiq.ansari(a)timesgroup.com, Dear Mr Ansari/List forum members I have seen Mr Ansari's posting to Lis-Forum on the subject of library automation software and his list of software. He was probably not aware that the Trust that I head has collaborated with a software company in Hyderbad, M/s Verus Solutions Pvt., Ltd to develop a fully n-tier web-based library automation and networking solution called NewGenLib. You may like to see the features of this software at http://www.newgenlib com. Also, kindly note that we have several versions of the software: single library, single user version single library, multi user LAN/Intranet or web version, multi-library, multi user LAN/Intranet version, and multi-library, multi-user networking/consortium version that runs on the web in an Application Service Provider (ASP) mode. The software is available under both Windows and Linux operating systems. We have used many open source components and hence it is much more affordable than similar software from the west. We also have a version which runs on an open source RDBMS called Firebird. This runs on stand alones and LAN/Intranet's. We have still to test it in a web environment. Importantly, the networking/consortium version allows the configuration of a network of libraries that use a single server and software infrastructure so that all libraries in the network need not invest in costly servers and software on each of their locations. Our present work will lead to the development of a multi-lingual version which will allow input, storage and retrieval of information in Indian languages. Unfortunately, except Hindi, nobody seems to have developed Unicode, UTF-8 fonts for other Indian languages. We are also working on building digital library functionality in a future version. Goa University and Osmania University and a few other small colleges have already implemented this software. You may like to see the Goa Academic Library's networks called GOALNET's OPAC at http://goalnet.unigoa.ac in:8080/newgenlibctxt/index.jsp. This network has the Goa Univ and 14 other institutions on it. However, please note that since Goa receives a lot of rain, there are not infrequent power outages there and the site may not sometimes be accessible. It will be dynamic whereby each individual's competencies could be widened, narrowed or altered over a period of time. There will be additional details like current position, experience, publications, area of specialisation, lectures/presentation in past etc. This will help the refresher course organisers to pick and choose so that the participants are benefitted by the best of lot rather than getting the same, repeat persons because of lack of suitable alternatives. -Manish Mankad Information Services Ext: 208/460 Tel: 022 28276208 Hindustan Lever research Centre B.D. Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 14:15:16 +0530 From: Vyasamoorthy(a)icicikp.com Dear Friends: Supplementing what Dr Laxman Rao & Mr Premchand have brought to your notice, I wish to add another database of equal Value. The NAFEN database of Engineering Faculty in Indian Universities/Colleges was originally hosted on Vigyan Server. By permission from NAFEN & NISSAT we have re-hosted the same database in our VIC website. The URLs are: http://www.nafenindia.com http://vigyan.org.in/ http://www.vic-ikp.info/vic/index.asp To access the databases for searchig in our VIC site you need a UserId & Password. Those interested in exploring may ask me for a free guest password on a temporary basis. KINDLY SEND A MAIL DIRECTLY TO ME AND NOT AS A REPLY TO THIS FORUM POSTING!! The original NAFEN database has been totally re-structed, quering simplified and access made faster. However there is no provision for online updating or addition of data as in other two databases our friends which have brought to our attention. Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 12:08:45 +0530 From: manish mankad <Manish.Mankad(a)unilever.com> Thanks Mr. Vijaykumar for UGC refresher course details. I have a suggestion: can we prepare a list of Lib professionals who could possibly form the resourse persons group for such refresher courses? It will be dynamic whereby each individual's competencies could be widened, narrowed or altered over a period of time. There will be additional details like current position, experience, publications, area of specialisation, lectures/presentation in past etc. This will help the refresher course organisers to pick and choose so that the participants are benefitted by the best of lot rather than getting the same, repeat persons because of lack of suitable alternatives. -Manish Mankad Information Services Ext: 208/460 Tel: 022 28276208 Hindustan Lever research Centre B.D. Announcing _B-Feeds(sm): Web Feeds for Books and Monographs_
by Mailing List Manager 12 Jul '04

12 Jul '04

Date: Thu, 08 Jul 2004 10:00:39 -0500 From: Gerry Mckiernan <gerrymck(a)iastate.edu> I am pleased to announce the creation and availability of a registry devoted to Web Feeds for Books and Monographs. The site, called _B-Feeds(sm)_ is available at: [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/B-Feeds1.htm ] _B-Feeds(sm): Web Feeds for Books and Monographs_ is a categorized registry of site that offer RSS/XML, Atom, or other Web feeds, to compilations, directories, lists, or reviews for academic or scholarly books or monographic works. I have seeded _B-Feeds(sm)_ with several major General sources and a few specialized ones. _B-Feeds(sm)_ is a companion to _eFeeds(sm)_ [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/eFeeds.htm ], my registry devoted to electronic journals that offer Web feeds. Each of these are adjuncts to my original Web feeds registry _RSS(sm): Rick Site Services_ , devoted to library services that are delivered or provided through Web feeds. _RSS(sm)_ is available at [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/RSS.htm ]. Those who wish to learn more about Web feeds and their current and potential uses may wish to consult a General Bibliography that I prepared for my RSS(sm) site. The bibliography is available via the RSS(sm) site or directly at [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/GenBib.htm ] and currently includes full-text links for all entries. For _B-Feeds_, I am greatly interested in identifying additional sources that offer/provide Web feeds to "compilations, directories, lists, or reviews for academic or scholarly books or monographic works" in Any and All subject areas. I am *particularly* interested in feeds from publishers/booksellers/vendors, etc. for specialized fields (e.g., Architecture, Engineering, Zoology). [As time permits, I plan to systematically review various publisher directories for publishers that offer Web feeds, but would like to first populate _B-Feeds(sm)_ with sources that are known and used by my Web colleagues. Thanks!] To Spread The Word: Please FORWARD this posting to Any and All book/publisher related e-lists to which you subscribe. Thanks A Million!
