In my opinion it is not proper that the Downloading should be treated as an Indicator of the quality of Papers. also it is not clear from the attached list which are the the second and third highest downloaded papers that have been authored by the scientists of your lab.however, a final decision about their quality can be taken only after a citation study of these papers. An OCLC publication, 2004. $40 I understand from one of the vendors that it would cost me $100 to procure this book for me ($40 cost of the book + $60 towards shipment and procurement). I strongly feel that we need to do something to correct this situation. I shall appreciate any pointers/help from members of this list on this point. If library suppliers are part of the forum they could = respond directly to individual's requirements -- if answering via forum = may be looked upon as 'commercial' activity. Moreover, we, in VIC act as providers of information, literature = searches, documents etc to our customers by procuring the same from = other sources including libraries, commercial book sellers, publishers = and online sources. As we act as intermediaries we have interests of = librarians (as we are librarians) and that of vendors as we are vendors = too. I do not find anything bad, unwelcome, un-holy about commercial = activities. We should shed this inhibition of allowing commercial = fellows into our fold. Government Institutions still have this "Us" and = "they" attitude strongly entrenched in them. This must go. However when = one section of the society tends to unnecessarily exploit the other to = their undue advantage then that has to be checked. A variety of institutions = (libraries, information and documentation centres, and other corporate bodies) have = been digitizing documents of various kinds (text, manuscript, and image) on different media. The purpose includes development of databases and/or archival resources, to preserve, access, retrieve and disseminate information and documents. Digitization may also form the basis for = creating products such as learning/teaching packages. A variety of software and techniques are being used. Some of the efforts have been successful = while others have not been so. Nevertheless, many institutions are interested = in digitization, and wish to learn from the experiences of those who have already undertaken digitization. An objective of this Seminar is to = bring together for exchange of ideas those with experience in and those who = have plans for, digitization. Papers are invited on practical experiences and case studies on the following aspects, but not exclusive of other aspects: 1.Use and evaluation of software and techniques for digitization (text, manuscript, image, sound, etc.) 2. Special aspects of digitization for archiving and preservation. 3.Classification, cataloguing and indexing =ADmethods, = tools and techniques. Standards, meta-data, authority files, vocabulary control etc. 4. Searching, retrieval, and user-interfaces. 5. Copyright and other intellectual property issues. 6. Management, economics, and costs. 7. Handling non-Roman Scripts. Authors are requested to focus on practical experiences with = digitization. The final paper should not exceed 5,000 (five thousand) words or 15 = pages including figures, tables and annexes. An extended abstract of about 3-4 pages of the proposed paper should be submitted in advance. It will be refereed. We at MSSRF had organised two three-day workshops in early May and 48 participants took advantage of the workshops. Please see Current Science dated 25 June 2004 for a report on the workshops. Later this month Dr Rajashekar at NCSI-IISc is organising a three-day workshop for INDEST member institutions. Dr D K Sahu [dksahu(a)medknow.com] is running a discussion list for the faculty and participants of the MSSRF workshops. The faculty and participants of the Osmania University workshop and the NCSI-IISc workshop are invited to join the list. Holding workshops is one thing and actually setting up archives and populating them is another. The improvements include a revamped layout to give the Web site a cleaner, simpler look and to more clearly distinguish between results generated organically by the search engine and results that appear because they are paid-for ads, often called sponsored results. Moreover, the search box in the home page will feature a pull-down menu to let users choose whether they want to query MSN Search's Web index, its news sources collection, a selection of the Encarta encyclopedia contents or stock quotes, among other options. MSN Search's performance has also been improved, as has the relevance of its query results As part of the revamp, Microsoft has decided to put its paid inclusion program on hold for now. Under the program, Web site owners pay to have their sites included in the MSN Search index. Search engines have been criticized for engaging in this practice, which detractors say artificially populates an index and thus skews the relevance of query results. Popular search engine Ask Jeeves Inc. last week announced that it was canceling its remaining paid inclusion program. Microsoft described MSN Search's upgrade as the biggest since it was launched in 1998, but added that the enhancements are "initial steps" in a massive push into the search arena. The company�s goal is to eventually deliver a search engine that provides direct answers to queries, Microsoft said.
