The NAFEN database of Engineering Faculty in Indian Universities/Colleges was originally hosted on Vigyan Server. By permission from NAFEN & NISSAT we have re-hosted the same database in our VIC website. I have a suggestion: can we prepare a list of Lib professionals who could possibly form the resourse persons group for such refresher courses? It will be dynamic whereby each individual's competencies could be widened, narrowed or altered over a period of time. It is usually seen that a fresh Blib person needs a large inputs from the practical way of work. However, most of the time he/she learns ( or does not !) while on the job ( which sometimes mean making mistakes and then mending them. This has a dimension of loss of productivity as well. Internship /summer placement makes such learning less burdensome and as they are time-tested, the implementation and improvements are faster and efficient. IGIDR, TIFR, TISS comes to my mind. UGC refresher course for the working librarians can have a faculty from the working professionals. may be we shd discuss this with Univ Librarians abt their experiences/feedback. Whoever gives the highest discount (it ranges from 21% to 34%) , orders will be placed with those vendors. And also the vendors delivers the book with the price proof and we also verify the price by visiting publishers' websites and we are paying them Bank Rate (SBI) prevailing on the date of billing. By this procedure, our library is saving quite a good amount by way of discount, which we are using to update our Reference collection. In my opinion it is not proper that the Downloading should be treated as an Indicator of the quality of Papers. also it is not clear from the attached list which are the the second and third highest downloaded papers that have been authored by the scientists of your lab.however, a final decision about their quality can be taken only after a citation study of these papers. Many librarians find the information as a sort of awareness 3. If we do not like to hav it or read it, u have an option to delete. once we start reading the mail. we understand and can be deleted. 4. how many professional memebres are sending useful messages. should we remove all of them from the group? important: Can we make use of the message from different dimension? Do we have GOC? Is it authorised by th Govt- now Govt is not participating. how far it is authentic? if it is not authentic, why no one is commenting on the aspect of illegality or irrelevance of the GOC rates.Who are the members? what is their authenticity), as i understand the IOLA have denied to associate with the GOC. People say that it is being fixed at the behest of few under the pressure of the select publisher ( subject to correction) Do you think that we should purchase the documents by paying GOC rates/ In almost all the academic libraries in south stopped purchase of periodicals throught GOC rates. mainly due to the fact that, by paying almost 5-6 %extra- for a budget of 25 lakhs it works out to be1.25 laks extra. therefore almost all the libraries have stopped purchasing the periodicals by GOC rates and they pay only bank rates. Is it justified to pay extra 5-6% to the publisher / Book seller? Let us insist not to pay extra 5-6% of the value, when we r undergoing the financial limitations. Now it is high time we pay actual rates in the stabilised economy. ( the GOC was to fix rates in volatile environment). Similarly any thing related to the profession may be permitted by the group. It gives an opportunity to many people to understand and know the issues. let our professional friends examine and write the critical comment on the messages. thanks laxman rao

Many booksuppliers are now offering 15% and some even 20%. Therefore, with this kind of arrangment, the GOC problem does not look too serious. All of us know how difficult it is to procure books from foreign publishers, particularly when you need them quickly (always!) At GE Bangalore, we have the following book procurement practice in place. Our priority is delivery time. We have tied-up with selected few book sellers with the following terms and conditions to procure foreign books. - Delivery time 30 days (maximum) - Discount 20% - Payment within 2 weeks - Conversion as per GOC rates In special cases, when we require books urgently, we pay actual courier charge (against proof) to the suppliers but he needs to deliver the book within 7 days. Discount and payment terms remain the same. Actually, we end up buying 20% of our books from online book stores, like amazon, due to urgent timelines. I feel, how nice if amazon can offer some discount to libraries & deliver the books with free of shipment charges! The directory published by National Book Trust during World Bookfair, 2004 has listed all the suppliers, who participated in the fair, along with the names of publishers they represent. Many publishers from US are not represented in India. I wonder whether there is any supplier to import books published by ALA. If there are no authorised stockists or representatives, then postage will be too high as mentioned by Mr.Chandra. Barnes and Noble, whom I met recently in US are willing to supply books to Indian libraries if the business offered is US $5000/- per year. They also offer about 20% discount. We at IGIDR have prepared database of suppliers in the area of social sciencs. Ltd. I am happy to let you know that NewGenLib has now been ported to run under Linux and also under an open source RDBMS, viz., Firebird. This RDBMS works well both under the Windows and Linux OS. This version has been tested on stand alones and on a LAN/Intranet and is well suited to small-to-medium libraries.
