Shashidhara Prasad Vice Chancellor University of Mysore, Mysore Presides You are cordially invited Date : 27th August 2004 Time : 3.00 P.M. Venue: Einstein Auditorium Department of Studies in Physics Manasagangotri, Mysore 6 Dr. Shalini. R. Urs Professor & Chairperson ------- Abstract of the talk : Data mining services require accurate input data for their results to be meaningful, but privacy concerns may influence users to provide spurious information. In this talk, we discuss whether users can be encouraged to provide correct information by ensuring that the mining process cannot, with any reasonable degree of certainty, violate their privacy. Specifically, we present a scheme, based on matrix-theoretic distortion of user data, that can simultaneously provide a high degree of privacy to the user, retain a high level of accuracy in the mining results, and be efficient with respect to its response times. The performance of the scheme is validated against representative real and synthetic datasets. ------ About the Speaker Jayant Haritsa is on the faculty of the Supercomputer Education & Research Centre and the Department of Computer Science & Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Suggestion needed
by Mahesh G T 18 Aug '04

Dear Professionals, our library has a good collection of books as well as serials, even we have maintained the AICTE norms of collection, actualy we have quite lot of multiple copies rather titles,we r planning (demand from management) to weed out some old editions of the same titles, but the irony is that some of the old edition of the title is usefull for some extent say "Advertising Management" by Batra and others, currently we have its eleventh edition, but still students felt in need of 5th,6th editions of the title,we have come across like same situation for several titles, so could anyone plz help me out in how far it is better to weed out the old editions, is it worth to weed out the multiple copies,(old editions) does it not affect the collection development, and is there any weeding out policy, considering the above case. thanking you, Mahesh G T Alliance Business Academy, Bangalore. Differential Pricing for Books in Foreign Currency
by I.R.N.Goudar 18 Aug '04

18 Aug '04

Dear friends, The differencial pricing for books in foreign currency has become a matter of concern to librarians, especially after EU adopted currency Euro. I wish to share our experience and invite your experience, comments, suggestions in the matter. Recently we purchased "Handbook of Nanotechnology" by Bhushan, B published by Springer(ISBN : 3-540-01218-4). While processing processing the invoice, we have noticed the following discrepancies : 1. The price mentioned in the invoice (EURO 249.00) and the price mentioned by the requester (USD 199.00) although different both are correct. 2. The price proof produced by the vendor, taken from the WEB (URL not given) 3. We visited the Springer site at http://www.springeronline.com/ and noticed different prices when checked depending upon the route as follows - Europe General, Asia, Africa: EURO 249.00 Germany: EURO 266.43 United Kingdom: Pound 191.50 North America, South America: USD 199.00 Switzerland: SFr 421.00 4. Amazon sells this book at the price USD 199.00, As you can see there is a huge difference in price of about Rs 5000. When enquired the vendors tell us that they procure through European sources and hence charge in EURO. Even if we give handling and postage charges to Amazon we not only save good amount, but get the document faster. In this particular case since the basic cost is more Amazon could be a solution. But why should we give such high prices? Can we not force the publishers to adopt single price? Why not Vendors use their US contacts to supply books at US $ price? Another interesting thing we notice is some Vendors publish the publishers catalogue locally to suit them. This is the case with journals too. We face problems while passing the bills as our accounts raise objections in such cases. How should we satisfy audits? One possibility is that we can demand the original invoice received by Vendors from publishers. Friends you too would have come across many such situations. Your reactions please! Dear Friends: Sometime ago I forwarded a few announcements regarding vacancies for Librarians that appeared in 'unusual' channels. Quite a few have taken advantage of this. However many have sent copies of their resume/biodata to me as well. I have absolutely nothing to do with such advertisements except that I have forwarded them to lis-forum. Kindly do NOT send resumes to me. To avoid confusion, I am also explicitly indicating at the bottom of my postings: "sent by" above my signature. Those interested in knowing about library vacancies may see www.naukri.com, www.monster.com etc. Quite a few do appear there. RE: [LIS-Forum] Lalu urged to launch library in trains
by Vyasamoorthy＠icicikp.com 18 Aug '04

18 Aug '04

Dear Friends Please refer to replies of Smt Vasumati, Dr GK Manjunath and Henag on the above topic. AH Wheeler has the large(st) network of railway station bookstalls in India. AHW or some such network can Collaborate with Railways and run "sales-cum-loans" extension counters in long distance trains. Audio video CD printed books and magazines may be sold and/or hired. Entire cost of a book is paid in advance. If you want to retain the book you just walk away. If you have finished the book and want to return it you can do it and pay only a lending fee (get back bulk of your money). This way the bookseller can reach a larger number of customers. Railways can provide book space for stalls or libraries inside trains without really investing on stocks. Maintenance cost of in-train libraries by contract employees can be borne by railways or shared with book shop network. There is no point in talking these things among ourselves. Lalu must be informed through proper channel! Can someone influential in Delhi take it up? Regards Vyasamoorthy, P

This cannot run for long as the reading habit in general people is very very less, those who like to read carry their own book or purchase from the platform vendors or hawkers and build their own collection at home after reading in train.Reading book from library may not work . Rather they can plan for a stall cum library in each long distance train which may be beneficial and may be successful.Stall cum Library should have audio /video facility which will attract people , specially the young generation .Instead of buying book/ cassettes from Platform they will buy from the stall. Stall also should have facility for cassette player which maybe given on rent and the deposit should be kept so that they would return. Also they need to publicize a lot, on each compartment there should be an advertisement mentioning about it, so that everyone knows about it. Libray /stall compartment should be painted differently so that it attracts people and generates the awareness of the containers. Years ago - in the mid 1970s- the Coromandel Express running between (then) - Calcutta and Madras had this facility. You "bought" a book and when you returned it to the "library" - you were refunded the cost of the book less a reading fee. But for some reason, the scheme ran only for a year or two and was withdrawn. It would really be good to have such a facility on all long distance trains. NACLIN 2004
by Mailing List Manager 17 Aug '04

17 Aug '04

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 16:03:14 +0100 (WETS) From: "Sangeeta Kaul, Network Manager, DELNET" <sangs(a)delnet.ren.nic.in> Seventh National Convention on Library and Information Networking NACLIN 2004 Theme Quality Information in the Internet Era November 23-26, 2004 Venue University of Pune, Pune Jointly Organised by DELNET Developing Library Network Jayakar Library 40, Max Mueller Marg Dept. of Lib. & Inf. Sc. Lodhi Estate University of Pune New Delhi-110003 Pune - 411007 E-mail : hkkaul(a)delnet.ren.nic.in E-mail: skpatil(a)unipune.ernet.in Web : www.delnet.nic.in Web: www.unipune.ernet.in Quality Information in the Internet Era The major concern today for libraries is that the users, including the students and teachers, have begun to use Web resources for everything. They gain access to a large number of resources without understanding that most of the content on the Web is not peer-reviewed. But there is variety on the Web, they can easily download the content, shape it and finally use it. These Web resources are mostly self-published and subjective in nature. The users do not have the patience to do extensive research in order to get an objective view on a given issue. As the number of hits on a given subject on the Web are generally very large in number, the users cannot go through all of them. The users, thus, access a few hits, collect some information and use it. As a result, the use of the traditional libraries has begun to decline in certain subject areas and if remedial measures are not taken it will be difficult for the users to get access to quality information. This trend, on one hand, is reducing the capacities of researchers for research and on the other, affecting the role of libraries as the centres of knowledge. The libraries need to grow as Knowledge Centres and use methods that evolve high quality information in their given fields. The Librarians and Infor mation Officers will have to develop critical assessment skills and have to gain access to virtual and printed collections through networks, search engines, subject guides, directories, meta-indexes, and through other resources on the Web. Evaluation of Internet resources in each discipline is going to be a specialised job in future. It will include the defining of selection criteria including the organisation of selected material and a host of technical methodologies that will enable the users to have a ccess to quality information. The Librarians and Information Officers need to monitor regularly the growth of Information Technology tools and techniques. It is with this concern that the National Convention on Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2004) being organised by DELNET in collaboration with the University of Pune is going to discuss various issues on the subject. DELNET-Developing Library Network DELNET, a major resource-sharing library network in South Asia covers a wide spectrum of member-libraries and their resources. DELNET is committed to pool the information about resources scattered in the libraries in the country and consolidate informatio n through union catalogues, union lists and other databases. This is being done to satisfy the major information requirements of students, researchers, scholars and the public in the country. DELNET services also support the research activities in India a s we regularly supply suitable content and information materials to libraries and their users. DELNET has now more that 750 member institutions in India and outside India. The DELNET database resources have now reached around four million records. The DEL NET services have become more popular in the country especially with the effective Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services which are provided to libraries across the country and also to the member-libraries outside the country. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF PUNE -THE HOST The University of Pune, the leading university in India was established as a result of long and sustained demand for a separate university in Maharashtra. The university made a humble beginning in 1949 with 8 postgraduate centres with 180 students and 23 affiliated colleges with 8,000 undergraduate students. It has now more than 44 postgraduate departments, 334 affiliated colleges and 157 recognised institutions having 25,000 post-graduate and 1,60,000 undergraduate students. Located on a spacious 411- acre campus with a majestic Gothic main building surrounded by magnificent trees and refreshing greenery, the University of Pune has developed into a main seat of higher learning in the city of Pune. The University of Pune has been instrumental in the rapid spread of education in rural areas and among the weaker sections of the society. The presence of the institutions of national importance including the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Inter University Centre for Astronomy and As trophysics (IUCAA), Education Media Research Centre (EMRC), Bioinformatics Centre and UGC Regional Centre has been made this campus a place of vigorous academic pursuits and intense intellectual activities. The University of Pune has been awarded a Five Star by NAAC and under potential for excellence scheme of the UGC, University of Pune made excellent progress. Jayakar Library The University Library named after Dr. Mukund Ramrao Jayakar, the first Vice-Chancellor of Pune University started in 1950 with books donated by Dr. Jayakar himself. Located in a spacious building (with 44,000 sq.ft. area) with a huge reading hall it is very close to the main building of the university. The Jayakar Library is rich in its collection and services. It has a collection of over 4,24,000 volumes covering all types of reading materials. The rare books and manuscript collection in the library is an invaluable asset for the scholars. The library receives more than 1,500 periodicals in print as well as online access and has a strong collection of audio-visual materials including CD-ROMs, etc. Jayakar Library plans to move into the electronic in formation era in a big way. The University of Pune has participated in the UGC INFONET Programme which facilitates access to E-journals of world collections along with JSTOR, J-Gate, Muse and other famous international databases of world. Presently Jayakar Library is implementing tw o projects, viz. 1. Pune University Digital Library: A part of "Millions of Books on the Web Project" in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, USA and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. So far 2142 books were scanned. 2. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Technology) Technology, which is non-contact, non-line-of-sight nature and is based on smart labels. RFID will be helpful for - A) Tag & Verify item Information B) Manage books on the self C) Keep an accurate inventory D) Deter theft Jayakar Library of Pune University is the first in India to implement this technology at such a large scale. Department of Library & Information Science In 1958, the University of Pune instituted a one-year diploma course in Library Science. Subsequently, the Dept. of Library & Information Science was set up under the Faculty of Mental, Moral & Social Science in 1978. Kerala's oldest library is manned by lepers Alleppy (Kerala) | July 23, 2004 3:14:59 PM IST http://www.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=43686&cat=India Believe it or not! Lepers are manning an old library in Kerala's Alleppy District. The library is said to house a huge stock of ancient books, records and a huge stock of 16th century palm leaf manuscripts situated in Alleppy district with a collection of some ancient books, records and palm leaf manuscripts dating back to the 16th century. Run by the Leprosy Sanatorium, the library is presently home to about 400 lepers who have been tasked with the responsibility of looking after the rare books and manuscripts. K.G, Narayan, a leprosy patient and caretaker of the library, said that though there are several old records and manuscripts, maintenance is a problem as there are very few educated patients left. "Here we have many kinds of old records and manuscripts and the paintings inside are all drawn by the patients. We preserve it and take great care of the manuscripts. Most of the educated in- patients have already left the sanatorium, here there is no one to man this place now," he said. There are nearly four million leprosy patients in the country, and they are amongst the high-risk communities in need of massive support. (ANI) Believe it or not! Dear Professionals, Following news item which appeared in The Times of India (12-08-2004) needs attention of LIS Community: We have to be very cautious even if we plan to destroy print books and journals after buying e-version/digitising of concerned documents. In this case reason mentioned is not digitising. ICSSR `transforms' itself: Dumps burns journals, books By Akshaya Mukul/TNN New Delhi: Prospective researchers beware: Do not venture anywhere near the documentation centre and library of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), for it has dumped - some say even burnt - thousands of Indian and foreign academic journals, books, dissertations, census reports and gazettes from its priceless collection. Also, a piece of advice to President APJ. Abdul Kalam, who on Thursday delivers the ICSSR's prestigious Vikram Sarabhai memorial lecture on 'Dynamics of Societal Transformation'. Pause for a while and ask ICSSR if transformation means cutting off old ties. For ICSSR has done precisely that. Rationale: Its National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC) has been transformed and moved to an ultra-modern building which presumably had no space for these works. In real terms, insiders in NASSDOC say, the loss has been immense. It had a collection of nearly two lakh Indian and foreign periodicals/journals of which barely 15,000 to 20,000 have survived. NASSDOC also had a collection of nearly 40,000 books of which barely 10,000 are left. From its collection of thousands of PhD dissertations collected from all over the country, barely 800 have made it to the new building. A large number were burnt and the remaining are in an advanced state of decay in ICSSR's godown. How has it affected ICSSR's standing as a repository of all knowledge in social science? From its collection of journals/periodicals, it used to cater to researchers all over the world. Any researcher could ask for a photocopy of articles which ICSSR used to send on a small payment. Similarly, dissertations were bought from all over the country by ICSSR after paying a small amount to the researcher. In turn, these dissertations became reference material for others. But for the past few months, scholars from India and abroad have been doing the rounds of NASSDOC only to be told to come later. ICSSR has even stopped buying dissertations. ICSSR chairman VR. Panchamukhi who, despite having a questionnaire from this reporter, dwelt for more than an hour on how he has changed everything for good, is an acquaintance of PM Manmohan Singh. He was unsure about the crucial question and asked ICSSR's directors, in front of this reporter, on what had happened. Panchamukhi then repeated what they told him: "Nothing has been burnt. There was very little space ... so may be books, journals and dissertations were dumped here ... Some even gifted to our institutions in Allahabad and Mhow." But he added: "I will set up an inquiry to find out who did it." The answer came from one of his senior associates who opposed the dumping move and drew the parallel from the burning of the library of Alexandria: "The mystery would exist not for lack of suspects but from an excess of them." -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I.R.N.
