Searching the TV programs - The Google way
by Sreeharsha_Gopalakrishna＠i2.com 26 Jan '05

26 Jan '05

Dear Professionals, Google has launched its Beta version of Google Video - the new search facility to search the TV programs, online. Give any TV program name as a key word - we get the brief information about the show. The best part of it is, On the left hand side of the result page, we get links about the show, upcoming episodes of the show, and if we still want to know more abt the show, there is a Google hyperlink which gives the result. Since its still in its early stage not much videos are uploaded, yet. Here is a brief account about Google Video Search: ==================================================================================== Google Tunes Into TV Google Video Enables Users to Search TV Content From PBS, the NBA, Fox News, C-SPAN, and others Mountain View, Calif. January 25, 2005 Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced the availability of Google Video, a new service that enables users to search the content of television programs from leading TV content providers including PBS, the NBA, Fox News, and C-SPAN, among others. This announcement demonstrates Google's commitment to creating innovative technologies that provide access to a greater diversity of the world's information. "What Google did for the web, Google Video aims to do for television," said Larry Page, Google co-founder and president of Products. "This preview release demonstrates how searching television can work today. Users can search the content of TV programs for anything, see relevant thumbnails, and discover where and when to watch matching television programs. We are working with content owners to improve this service by providing additional enhancements such as playback." The Google Video beta (http://www.google.com/video) enables users to search across the closed captioning content of a growing number of TV programs that Google began indexing in December, 2004. Entering a query such as iPod will return a list of relevant television programs with still images and text excerpts from the exact point in the program where the search phrase was spoken. Google Video offers these additional search features: Preview page: Displays up to five still video images and five short text segments from the closed captioning of each program. Upcoming episodes: Shows when the program will be aired next. Search within the show: Enables searching for specific words within a given program. Program details: Offers program and episode information including channel, date and time. Change location: Finds the next time and channel where a program will air locally according to zip code. For television channels and content producers, Google Video can increase viewership by providing Google users with information on future airings of relevant programs. "For more than three decades PBS and local PBS stations have pioneered the use of state-of-the-art technology to use media to inform, engage, entertain, and educate the American public," said Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of PBS. "Today we are proud to join with Google, a company that continues to achieve new levels of technical innovation with the launch of Google Video, a new service that increases the reach and impact of PBS content." "NBA fans are tech savvy early adopters," said NBA Commissioner David Stern. "With our partnership with Google on the pioneering Google Video service, we enhance our ability to meet the needs of NBA fans, delivering to them content and information in a new and innovative way." This early-stage release of Google Video does not include Google AdWords advertising or playback options. Google wants to offer cheap phone calls by broadband
by Sreeharsha_Gopalakrishna＠i2.com 25 Jan '05

25 Jan '05

Google wants to offer cheap phone calls by broadband Richard Wray Guardian Google is the latest dotcom business looking to increase its revenues by offering broadband internet users the ability to make cheap phone calls over the web. The California-based internet search engine is doing some searching of its own, looking for a "strategic negotiator" to help the company deal with telecoms companies to put together "a global backbone network" which will help it increase the services it can provide. Google, which carries almost half of all internet search queries globally, is one of many companies looking to offer residential customers the chance to use their existing broadband internet connections to make cheap phone calls using technology called voice over internet protocol (VoIP). Internet service providers Wanadoo and AOL are already looking at using the technology to increase the revenues they make from their existing internet access customers. For Google, which was unavailable for comment yesterday, providing a telephony service would give the search engine its first chance to gain an insight into who uses its website. The information would improve the service it offers to its advertisers. Industry observers reckon that through VoIP Google would also be able to add new functions such as click to dial - where an advertiser's web-page has a special button that connects an internet phone straight to a call centre. At its most basic level, VoIP offers free calling. Services such as Skype and Gossiptel allow broadband users to download software on to their computers and call other broadband users with exactly the same software for free regardless of where they are. But problems arise when VoIP users wish to call or be called by people who are not using the same technology or who are on mobile phone networks. To connect a call across networks incurs an interconnect fee which shatters the ideal of free internet phone calls as the VoIP service provider finds itself having to pay for the privilege of being part of the international telephony market. VoIP specialist Vonage launched a broadband telephony service in the UK from ?9.99 offering unlimited calling to landline phones in the UK and Ireland. At Christmas BT ran a promotion offering a year's free internet calls to new broadband customers along with a free VoIP headset. **************************************** Sreeharsha BG Knowledge Management Group i2 Technologies software Pvt. Free/OpenSource /LowCost Journal Management Software?
by Gerry Mckiernan 24 Jan '05

24 Jan '05

_Free/OpenSource /LowCost Journal Management Software?_ For a future eProfile for my _Library Hi Tech News_ column, I am greatly interested in learning of Any and All Free/OpenSource/LowCost Journal Management Software/Systems Among the software/systems I have identified are epress [ http://www.epress.ac.uk/ ] "The epress journal management system helps editors and publishers of academic journals organise the flow of submissions, book reviews and journal issues. It is a web-based system which means that editors and publishers can work anywhere in the world where there is Internet access. The system prompts users through all the stages of journal administration, from selecting and inviting referees, chasing late reports, sending decision letters to authors, to publishing an issue. Although primarily deigned for managing electronic journals, it is also invaluable for conventional paper-based journals. For electronic journals, it manages notifications of new issues, generating RSS news feeds and files for content alert services. There are many other features that are invaluable for journal editors and publishers." AND Open Journal Systems [ http://www.pkp.ubc.ca/ojs/ ] "Open Journal Systems (OJS) is a journal management and publishing system that has been developed by the Public Knowledge Project through its federally funded efforts to expand and improve access to research. OJS assists with every stage of the refereed publishing process, from submissions through to online publication and indexing. Through its management systems, its finely grained indexing of research, and the context it provides for research, OJS seeks to improve both the scholarly and public quality of referred research. OJS is open source software made freely available to journals worldwide for the purpose of making open access publishing a viable option for more journals, as open access can increase a journal's readership as well as its contribution to the public good on a global scale ... " This planned eProfile will complement one devoted to commercial systems in which I profiled in my column a two-and-half years ago: "Web-based Journal Manuscript Management and Peer-Review Systems and Services" _Library Hi Tech News_ 19, no. 7 (August 2002): 31-43. Self-archived at: [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~gerrymck/PeerSoft.pdf ] . TIA! New ISBN with 13 digits
by Satish Munnolli 24 Jan '05

24 Jan '05

appologies for cross posting A new International Standard Book Number (ISBN) has been approved and will come into effect as of 1 January 2007 requiring that all books published after this date will carry the new 13-digit ISBN. Plans have been prepared to facilitate the smooth transition on a global level and is necessitated by the dwindling of the numbers available to meet the growing demands of publishers and publications worldwide. The ISBN came into existence in 1970 as the internationally recognized identification system for the publishing and book sector. A unique identifier is attributed to each monographic publication from production and facilitates ordering and inventory by booksellers, libraries, publishers and the like as, in addition to enabling the collection of data it also contributes to the management of rights. The revised ISO standard, which is scheduled to published early in 2005, is the first time the structure has changed since its inception and revised implementation guidelines explaining in the process detail can be downloaded from http://www.isbn-international.org/en/download/implementation-guidelines-04.… Satish S Munnolli Librarian Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer A Grant-in-aid Centre of the DAE, Govt. of India. Dear LIS Professionals, I would like to thank all the LIS Professionals on this forum and special thanks are due to the following members: Dr.K.N. Prasad Dr.Puttaraj Choukimath Dr. Casius C. Issac Dr. Benny Dr. Prafulla Chandra If I have missed any other names unintentionally, I would like to thank them too. ------------------ I completely agree with the views of Dr. Prafulla Chandra, in lacking a single comprehensive information resource pointer/url to our publications on the internet. In fact, I was little hesitated to put this query on this forum. Before doing this, I tried to visit all the publishers web sites on the internet as well as sent request to all the book vendors to provide the updated catalogue. Since, I did not wanted to miss any of the books authored by Indian, I was tempted to put this query on this forum. I would also like to thank the NCSI for considering my request and forwarding my query to the forum. Thank you all for your guidance. Best regards, A.V. P.S.: I continue to welcome if there are any more inputs to my querry, since the excercise is still going on.

Re: [nmlis] Abscence of recognition - Who will bell the cat?
by Smita Chandra 20 Jan '05

20 Jan '05

Dear professionals, Vasu (as we in Mumbai know her) has so precisely pointed out areas for revamping in the education being imparted to LIS students. I wish to share with you my perceptions on a major area of learning in LIS, namely MARC. While we have a course work on it in library schools, how many of us have actually been inducted into the training of cataloging using MARC (school or after words). Not that it hinders our work, but with the divergent plethora of libraries we work in, I am sure a very basic training would have gone a long way. No wonder we have no Labs from LIS departments specifically on say Metadata or Digital Preservation (I may please be corrected). Sometime back, I heard this at a lecture and also from major players (ethical and knowledgable) of our field, that we in India, need to start building our libraries from the very basic, by educating people to "read". We are not a society where people read to gather information. People do not "use" libraries because they do not know what to read either. I feel we need to work towards : 1. Project work for school students, such that it includes the usage of libraries. We need people representing us, to make effective statements with major bodies like the UGC, NCERT, etc, etc. Same goes the case with our IT policy. 2. Our personal appearence makes the first impression on people, for we talk later. Likewise, how effective will a "Hi-Tech Library" be, with dusty, cramped, and dark shelves? We Indians support supperior technical jargon, nothing less. For eg., if we convey people that a conference on libraries is being organized, no body would probably even listen out, but, if we were to modify and say a conference on "information management and digitial libraries" is being organized, they would be more than awed. The way our national newspapers cover any course work, or conference with the above mentioned terminology is proof to that. Maybe, we need to cash on the trend since we are already at such sinking depths, for that is what works here ! 2. More International exposure of professionals in libraries of the schools, colleges, museums. We need activities for creating libraries and introducing reading programs, just like they are doing it in Africa. Please check, worldlibraries.org/itw/itwoverview.shtml, to get an idea of what I am stating. 3. Working in correlation with major international associations, not only for conferences and conferring 'yet another' international award, but also, for training courses and workshops in India. We do not need technically loaded concepts for basics, but very fundamental skills to strive. It is not difficult to understand and implement new technology, until we learn to put forth our requirements to our respective managements, which can happen only when we prove our efficiency. 4. Somedays back, we saw a message posted about a new certificate course at UIUC available also via their LEEP program (distance education). We need our library schools to partner with major schools from all over the world, so that we can do something similar in our country. The list is long and as it comes to mind I might just keep jotting down, but I hope this is enough for a weekend (an early one this time :-)). I have seen people from most fields who choose to remain mediocres the rest of their lives. And I am talking to you about CAs, doctors, engineers, scientists who just do not excell, after all remember it is not our profession which runs (ruins) this country, but our bureaucrats and technocrats. Excellence in all fields are exceptions, but having a high morale about our profession and ourselves is not. Thanks for hearing me out, Cheers, Smita Chandra Librarian Indian Institute of Geomagnetism New Mumbai Vasumathi Sriganesh <vasu(a)qmedin.com> wrote: I think N. Sreeharsha has hit the nail on the head. "...............Okay, now who is going to tie the bell on the cat's tail"? a). I am not on the IATLIS list, since I am not a teacher in LIS. I request those who are on the IATLIS list to send a mail to that list members, our ideas about i) Standardization of a Two year MLIS, scrapping BLIS, and introduction of a short course of Certificate in LIS ii) Make Language and communication a VERY STRONG focus in the MLIS course iii) Focus on Marketing Information Services iv) Improve Management and Technology based subjects v) Introduce an element on ethics, copyright and legal issues v) Make a compulsory element of a Summer Training (or whichever months are best). This training should be something, where students do a serious project, which has good impact for the Institution (Eg - developing an area of the library website). They should not be given only those jobs that normally get sidelined in a library. I am aware that some libraries take students for internship projects, and give them only shelving and clerical work. Such jobs could be given to certificate students. The objective is to have a one year plan and have the right course, with the right syllabus, WITH a plan for some upgrade every year. We need to bring IT and Management people to be involved. b) Admission to the above "new" MLIS course. We need to plan to get professional entrance tests created. And to market the course by - Proper ads in the papers - Talking to career counsellors to talk / write about the course - Any other innovative methods - even talking to Degree students about the course - Market it to other subject teachers - eg degree course teachers, so that they may recommend this course to students c) Interaction with the Industry. This should be done with an objective of having jobs ready for the first batch of students. The course and calibre of students should be marketed to the industry, by telling them that by employing people with such training, their organization would have xyz benefits. d) In terms of UGC and funding and implementing such changes, I think the best thing to do, is to have a group of us making a proper plan and asking for an appointment with the President of India. He loves children, he loves education and he loves libraries. If we get his blessings for this change, I think things can move. As I said, in the beginning, I am not a teacher of Lib. Sc. For those who do not know me, I am not a working librarian either (I was for about 7 years) I am an entrepreneur - and I feel very very strongly for the profession. I am willing to spend time and money on this entire "belling the cat" exercise. I am willing to take plenty of initiatives (what I already have done, is to employ three librarians, and am giving them salaries, working environment and teaching - to the best of my ability) This entire thing requires huge effort and commitment, and importantly sacrifices. The biggest sacrifice being giving up one's ego and not worrying about getting a name for this entire activity. Whoever heads this activity should not think that his/her name is important. And anyone who wants to work for this should be ready for doing a lot. Any more takers? Vasumathi Sriganesh Director, QMed Services Pvt. Ltd. Dear all, What is the latest technology for making available a collection of Video CDs/ Data CDs on local network of library.
