Prof. Guedons interest in both theoretical and practical issues regarding electronic publishing has led him to produce numerous papers on the subject as well as to present at conferences worldwide. He has been actively engaged in projects pushing the boundaries of scholarly communication including serving on the steering committees of the Canadian National Site Licensing Project and the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. He has lectured extensively on related topics in various seminars and meetings organized by prestigious agencies including the National Library of Medicine, Association of Research Libraries, Open Society Institute, IFLA, Society of Scholarly Publishers, OCED-IMHE, and so on. Disruptive Scholarship
by Gerry Mckiernan 01 Feb '05

01 Feb '05

Disruptive Scholarship As defined by the Wikipedia, "[a] disruptive technology is a lower performance or less expensive product or process that gains a foothold in the low end, less demanding part of an existing market, and then successively moves up-market through performance improvements until finally displacing the market incumbents. Disruptive technologies are usually introduced to the market by small startup enterprises." The term Disruptive Technology was coined by Clayton M. Christensen and described in his 1997 book The Innovator's Dilemma. [MORE] [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_technology ] In considering the nature of the Wiki [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki ] and the increasing range of applications [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/WikiBib.htm ], I have begun to speculate further about the Wiki as *the* platform for The Next Generation e-Journal [ http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Web4Lib/archive/0408/0173.html ] and the transformation of the review process. I hereby invite Any and All of my Web Colleagues to Critically Review the scenarios outlined below in which I sketch the probable future [:-)] of scholarly communication, review, and publishing ['Disruptive Scholarship'] in the WikiWorld. Regards, /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Disruptive Librarian Iowa State University Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu Presented for Your Consideration: In view of its collaborative features and functionalities, and the nature and character of alternative methods of quality management outlined, the wiki environment (McKiernan 2005) could provide an outstanding framework for preparing, editing, reviewing, assessing, and publishing for a range of scholarly work, including manuscripts, articles, journals, and monographs (Guest 2003). In one possible wiki-based publication scenario, authors would prepare a manuscript draft using locally-installed wiki engine software (or a free or commercial wiki service) that best suits their needs or preferences. In a first stage review, colleagues would be invited to participate in a review of the draft. At this stage, the author can choose to allow first-stage reviewers to edit the text, or limit participation to a discussion space. At a second stage, known specialists in the field(s) covered by the manuscript could be invited to review the revised first stage version. As in the first stage review, second stage reviewers would be granted open permission to edit the manuscript text, or be restricted to commenting on its content. At a third - and perhaps final stage - the author could request that others (such members of a professional electronic discussion list) review and edit and/or comment on the new, revised version. After final review, the revised final stage version could be locked from future discussion or editing. The locking of the final version could constitute formal publication of the work. Alternatively, the author/editor in chief at some later time could unlock the published version and invite any reader to discuss and/or edit it, thereby creating a 'living', dynamic, potentially ever-changing-and improving document by doing so. In this general scenario, there would be no editorial evaluation or judgment of the initial or subsequent versions of an original manuscript by an editor or editorial board; at each stage, the author would serve as both author and editor in chief, and ultimately as publisher of his/her work. The significance and value of the work would be based on a variety of metrics that could include a matrix of such measures as citation pattern, linking volume, and access statistics (McKiernan 2004). Opportunities for Libraries/Librarians? /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Coded Librarian Iowa State University Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu Personal Radio Via Podcasting Grows More Popular [ http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4472935 ] All Things Considered, January 31, 2005 · Adam Curry, the former MTV VJ, is the star of a new broadcasting medium. His show, Daily Source Code, claims some 50,000 listeners -- but can't be heard on the traditional airwaves. Instead, it's a podcast, so-called because it's delivered via the Internet directly to iPods and other personal listening devices. The podcast pushes the range of personal online rantings to something close to an international radio broadcast. And as NPR's Nathan Santamaria reports, the quality is low, but the hopes are high. Dear Santosh, Let me first wish u all the best for ur endeavor. As it is u are working under one of the best guidance of Mr. G. K. Manjunath, Chief Librarian & Mr. S. M. Pujar, Assistant Librarian. I would like to suggest some points which I hope will be of help u in ur website development & give a professional touch to it: 1. The color coordination of all the pages should be consistent (inclusive of the Title, Tables, etc). The acknowledgement, contact & request page looks entirely diff. than the rest of the website. 2. In the contacts page u can add the links of the other portions of ur site (About Karnataka University, Social Science faculty, etc). 3. With regards to the Quotes (its a nice idea), but all the pages should be having one and better still if u can link with some website from where u can get the Quotes automatically updated, try out http://www.quotationspage.com/yourpage.html . 4. W.r.t copyright year u should put it in all the pages, better while making diff. pages for the site make a model page and keep just changing the content and the requisite links only (P.s.: this will save a lot of time and energy and will also give a consistent look to ur web pages). 5. There is a lot of space left vacant near the bottom of ur pages, just scrape the vacant space and try to cover the page in a way that will give it a more professional look. 6. Its a tendency of us information professionals to either go in for very subdued colors or very bright colors, (correct me if Iam wrong), but when a person visits a site he/she is basically attracted to the sites which have proper color coordination. Very subdued ones gives it a dull feel and very bright ones irritates the patron to the level that he/she cannot sustain to browse through the web pages for long because of the eye strain. Better go in for colors which give a pleasant feel as well as are sober and less strain to the eyes. 7. Regular updating of the website is the key aspect of making the efforts borne fruitful. I am submitting some of my suggestions over here if, any suggestions are there please update me too (for all my fellow professionals). Heres wishing u all the very best again Santosh for ur website development. Best Regards, Ashish J. Kanal -----------------------------------------------------------------------Ashish J. Public Speaking Handbook for Librarians and Information Professionals by Sarah R. Statz Paperback: 175 pages Publisher: McFarland & Company (July, 2003) ISBN: 0786415460 US $ 39.95 Editorial Reviews >From Booklist "One of the core competencies for librarians today is communication skills." This quotation from Maggie Weaver opens Statz's book. In two sections, "The Speaking Process" and "The Speaking Environment," Statz shares her own and others' experiences with public-speaking interaction. She does not promise to make it easy but rather to help librarians find their own voices. "The Speaking Process" is a textbook of the principles of preparation and delivery. These chapters focus on listening as well as speaking. "The Speaking Environment" discusses specific situations such as interviewing, instruction, meetings, and presentations. Appendixes of professional interviews, software tips, and bibliographic references make this a book that could be used in a teaching situation or as a reference for the professional shelf in any library. RBB Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Product Description: Now more than ever, librarians need good communication skills. They are no longer unseen collectors, classifiers, and cultural guardians. Information professionals are doing more public speaking at conferences, in meetings, classes, book talks and countless other situations, but many of them dislike, even fear, the thought of getting up in front of a group of people and giving a presentation. Librarians and other information professionals can find in this work help in overcoming their hesitation. Part one offers basic principles for better speech preparation and delivery, discussing such topics as the importance of good listening skills to being a good speaker, doing the necessary research beforehand, applying organizational skills to a presentation, engaging an audience, practicing a presentation before actually giving it, and putting oneself at ease, among others. Part Two discusses the specific situations in which librarians often have to communicate, including interviews, interpersonal communication, library instruction, meetings and presentations to large groups. Reviews : Sarah Statz's Public Speaking Handbook for Librarians and Information Professionals is a terrific resource for any librarian who counts workshops, book talks, bibliographic instruction, story times, presentations, or discussion groups among their job responsibilities. It is also a useful tool for any library employee seeking to improve their day-to-day interactions with library users. This well-written handbook is divided into two distinctive parts. The first part provides basic strategies and suggestions suitable for anyone preparing to speak before a group. The second section focuses specifically on the world of library professionals and the situations in which improved public speaking skills can positively impact self-representation as well as the quality of service provided in the library. I found that the author's enthusiasm for the topic, keen sense of humor, conversational writing style, and well-researched approach make this handbook uniquely enjoyable to read. A busy professional will also appreciate the practical length of the book, the nicely annotated suggestions for further reading (included with many of the chapters), and "The Speaker's Bookshelf" in the appendices. It is clear that the author has carefully done her research and applied it to her own experience working in the library world. As a public librarian, I have referred to this book many times and have always found it to be useful. I believe that any library professional will find this handbook to be an asset to their personal reference shelf.
