Fwd: Brewster Kahle's Internet Archive as OA Back-Up
by Subbiah Arunachalam 10 Apr '05

10 Apr '05

Friends: Here is some very good news fro Stevan Harnad. Thanks to the efforts of Peter Suber in collaboration with Brewster Kahle, the Internet Archive http://archives.eprints.org/eprints.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.org%2F will now begin serving not only as a back-up for institutional OA archives worldwide, but also as an OA archive for those researchers who are not affiliated with universities or research institutions with OA archives of their own. Here is the announcement from Peter Suber's Open Access News http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/2005_04_03_fosblogarchive.html#a11129743… followed by some excerpt's from Peter's Sparc Open Access Newsletter: More on Brewster Kahle and the OA projects of the Internet Archive Paul Boutin, The Archivist: Brewster Kahle made a copy of the Internet. Now, he wants your files, Slate, April 7, 2005. http://slate.msn.com/id/2116329/ Excerpt: 'Kahle is less the Internet's crazy aunt --the tycoon who can't stand to throw anything away-- than its evangelical librarian. "The history of digital materials in companies' hands is one of...loss," he tells me in a rushed meeting. Like it or not, the Web is the world's library now, and Kahle doesn't trust the guys who shelve the books....Instead of creating another startup that crawls the Web to make money, Brewster used his millions to preserve as much knowledge as possible and --just as important-- make it accessible to anyone who can get to a computer....The Internet Archive isn't just the Wayback Machine --the nonprofit's two dozen or so employees have filled an equal amount of disk space with uploaded film collections, presidential debates, Bugs Bunny cartoons, and news broadcasts from the Middle East. The archive is especially keen on books. They've scanned about 25,000 of them so far as part of the Million Book Project, a collaboration with Indian and Chinese agencies to create an online library in the place of bricks-and-mortar reading rooms....The final step in building the archive into a true global library: getting you to contribute. Ourmedia, a project launched two weeks ago, offers free, unlimited, permanent storage of your videos, photos, Word files, podcasts?anything that's not porn and not covered by someone else's copyright. The one catch: The files, stored on Internet Archive servers, will be freely available to anyone in the world.' (Peter Suber: If you missed it, see this announcement from SOAN for 4/2/05: http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/newsletter/04-02-05.htm#oara 'Many publishing researchers don't have OA repositories in their institutions or disciplines. The missing piece of the puzzle is an OAI-compliant "universal repository" that will accept eprints from any scholar in any discipline. I'm very happy to say in public for the first time that Brewster Kahle of the Internet Archive (IA) has agreed to launch just such a repository. I'm working with the technical staff of the IA to set it up now. Not only will it host new content for scholars with no other place to deposit their work, but it will offer to preserve all the other OAI-compliant repositories in the world. The IA's proven commitment to open access and long-term preservation make this a most exciting prospect.') http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/newsletter/04-02-05.htm#oara (2) Many publishing researchers don't have OA repositories in their institutions or disciplines. The IA's proven commitment to open access and long-term preservation make this a most exciting prospect. Moreover, the good people at the Creative Commons are working on a drag-and-drop interface for depositing new eprints in the IA repository. More details later. The Internet Archive http://www.archive.org/ (1) The process of OA archiving is not intrinsically time-consuming or intimidating, but even low barriers are too high when authors are desperately short of time. One piece of good news is that we are making progress on automating the generation of metadata. This will reduce both the time and the difficulty of self-archiving and one day may automate the entire process after an author clicks "yes". Another piece of good news is that a new study by Leslie Carr and Stevan Harnad based on "two months of submissions for a mature repository" shows that "the amount of time spent entering metadata would be as little as 40 minutes per year for a highly active researcher." The problem isn't a real time-sink but a groundless fear of a time-sink. Leslie Carr and Stevan Harnad, Keystroke Economy: A Study of the Time and Effort Involved in Self-Archiving. A preprint put online March 15, 2005. http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/10688/ http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/2005_03_13_fosblogarchive.html#a11110069… Automating or semi-automating the archiving deposit process won't help scholars without deposit rights at an OA, OAI-compliant repository, and a universal repository won't help scholars who believe they are too busy to bother. That's why it's important that we're seeing progress on both fronts at once. Each development removes another excuse for not archiving. You may find it useful to visit the following website for the guidelines issued by the Government of India on this issue. Unless it is proved that the loss of books is due to the dishonestry or negligence on the part of the librarian, it is unfair and unreasonable to penalise the librarian. http://www.kkbooks.com/ Click Conversion Rate Link at the top. Loss of three volumes per one thousand volumes issued/consulted in a year may be taken as reasonable provided such loss cannot be attributed to dishonesty or negligence on the part of the Librarian. Loss of a book of the value exceeding Rs.200/- (Rupees two hundred) and the books of special nature and rarity shall invaribly be investigated and consequential action taken. All such losses will, however, be written off only by a competent authority. T.V. RE: [LIS-Forum] Do digital libraries violate the Third Law?

Date: Wed, 6 Apr 2005 13:24:53 +0530 From: Manish Mankad <Manish.Mankad(a)unilever.com> I have some thoughts on the lines of Vasumathi. Well, we can not compare share purchase with information pickup.. if u still insist it to be the same, let us ask an honest question to those who did online share purchase WITHOUT expert advice and how many of them actually lost money bec their knowledge abt the company was superfluous i.e. something similar when u get first few hits on public search engines..If u get it right once does not guarantee anything. Idea is not to impose ourselves but to save the time of the users by giving them relevant info with least of the noise content. Ask any scientist who has filed the patent and has done a prior art search..To find out a seemingly simple concept, device, technique hidden under a mass of literaute is a task in itself. This is in the light of availability of built-in expert systems and full text search capabilities of the databases. The scientists willingly seek Info specialits help in doing so and is not surprising bec failure to detect a similar idea wd mean a huge avoidable expense. -Manish Mankad Information Services Ext: 208/460 Tel: 022 28276208 Hindustan Lever research Centre B.D. Self-Learning Module on Digitization and Digital Libraries
by Dr. T.B. Rajashekar 06 Apr '05

06 Apr '05

Dear All *** Apologies for any cross-posting of this message *** FAO has recently released a self-learning module on "Digitization and Digital Libraries". This was developed jointly between FAO and UNESCO with the support of the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This module is intended to train librarians and other information specialists in the conceptual and practical bases for the digitization of collections, and in the creation and provision of access to digital libraries. This module is part of the Information Management Resource Kit (IMARK) initiative of FAO, which has been developing a series of interactive self-paced learning modules, related to information management since 2001 for delivery on CD-ROM (http://www.fao.org/IMARK/) The first IMARK module on "Management of Electronic Documents", which covers the collection, archiving, management and dissemination of electronic documents and associated images was released in November 2003 and has been received quite well, notably in the Asian region. The "Digitization and Digital Libraries" module provides 31 lessons concerned with the creation and sharing of digital library collections. Lessons cover topics such as copyright issues, electronic formats for text and images, metadata and subject indexing, preservation of digital material as well as a comprehensive overview of the creation and management of digital documents. The module expands upon several of the topics covered in the module "Management of Electronic Documents" mentioned earlier. The 31 lessons (each roughly of 30-40 minutes learning time) are organized in 6 units: Unit 1: Conceptual Overview. Introduces digital libraries and the legal environment within which they operate. Examples from different subject domains are used to demonstrate the use and main features of digital libraries. Unit 2: Electronic Documents and Formats. Describes and provides a technical overview of the various formats of electronic documents, character encoding schemes and encoding scripts, document mark-up, and how to convert between the various formats. Unit 3: Metadata Standards and Subject Indexing. Describes the role of metadata, metadata types, various standards and their application in organizing electronic documents, including the Dublin Core. Introduces the principles and procedures of subject indexing. Unit 4: Creation and Management of Digital Documents. Covers the workflows involved in the creation and management of electronic documents, including the digitization, creation and adaptation of documents for a digital library, issues related to heritage documents. Unit 5: Creation and Sharing of Digital Libraries. Covers the processes and resources required for planning, implementing and managing a digital library project. Unit 6: Example of Digital Library Software Greenstone. Describes the use of the Greenstone Digital Library Software in building and providing access to digital library collections. The module uses Flash and XML technology for retrieving and presenting the lessons. In addition to the lessons themselves, the module provides the learners with access to an internal search function and a technical glossary, as well as with on-board and on-line reference materials, including relevant non-proprietary software applications and tools. Introducing Bibliocasting List
by Gerry Mckiernan 05 Apr '05

05 Apr '05

Posted on Behalf of Dave Lankes Apologies for Cross-Posting PLEASE REDISTRIBUTE WIDELY Introducing the Bibliocasting listserv. The bibliocasting listserv (bibliocasting(a)listserv.syr.edu) is dedicated to a discussion of streaming media in the library environment. This list grows out of the increasing popularity of "Podcasting," or the use of RSS and the Internet to download audio programs (like audio blogs) to computers and MP3 players. A recent Reuters story states: "Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults who own MP3 players like Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod say they have downloaded podcast programs from the Internet, the Pew Internet and American Life Project found...That means more than 6 million people are listening to a form of communication that emerged only last year, according to the nonprofit group." So what to post on the list? Examples of how libraries can build on the growing excitement of Podcasting; Questions on how libraries can use podcasting and other multimedia information they create to promote themselves and provide better service; Questions on how to podcast and other technical questions on streaming media including QuickTime Streaming, RealProducer, and others. In addition, the list will include postings of key articles, reports, and news about podcating and other streaming media in general and in the the library context. Bottom Line: We are looking to build a community of individuals interested in the application of multimedia in the library environment. SUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST You can get the listserv in two ways. The first is through e-mail. To subscribe to the list send an e-mail to listserv(a)listserv.syr.edu with the entire message (no subject line): subscribe bibliocasting FirstName LastName We have also set up a podcast for the list...that's right, you can listen to the list. Each post is transformed from text-to-speech, and syndicated using RSS. The RSS feed (podcast feed) for the list is at: http://drew.syr.edu/iis4/pod/pod.xml _____________________________ "Virtual Dave" Lankes, Ph.D. Executive Director Information Institute of Syracuse School of Information Studies, Syracuse University http://www.DavidLankes.org

Dear All I am glad to inform you that, as a collaborative effort between NCSI and IISc Library, we have recently set up etd@IISc, the theses repository of IISc, using DSpace. It is accessible at: http://etd.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/ etd@IISc repository has been developed to capture, preserve and disseminate research theses of our institute. We expect the repository to grow in the coming days. etd@IISc is compliant to ETD-MS metadata specifications recommended by NDLTD and is also OAI v 2.0 compliant. etd@IISc grew out of two trainee projects in the NCSI IKM training programme. This service complements ePrints@IISc - the research publications repository of IISc (http://eprints.iisc.ernet.in/) operational for about 2 years now. It is growing steadily and is receiving significant accesses from around the world, with about 15,000 abstract/ full text views per month. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Do digital libraries violate the Third Law?
by Sukhdev Singh 05 Apr '05

05 Apr '05

Dear Friends, There is an interesting article on the following URL. http://www.libraryjournal.com/index.asp?layout=articlePrint&articleID=CA512… Some Extracts are given below: .."Every book, its reader" almost means that "resources look for people." Thus, the job of librarians is to help these resources find the people who want and need them the most. Library patrons, Ranganathan points out, often do not know enough about available resources to know what to request. Any organization of the electronic or physical library that focuses only on getting the readers what they ask for neglects two key components of good library practice: browsing and linking.. ..Because of today's confusing array of resources, new violations of the third law have emerged. Consider search engines. No one focused on creating a "well-arranged collection" of e-resources can ignore that users are going to Google for quick or even substantive information requests. Google gives marvelously fast access to massive amounts of information (and misinformation). It is almost everyone's favorite place for a quick search. In fact, one could say that Google usually passes the fourth law (save the time of the reader) with flying colors—except when the plethora of hits slows the reader down. With the advent of Google Print and particularly Google Scholar, more and more students and researchers will begin their work on Google... Any comments? Civilians not allowed entry to library in Cantt
by Vyasamoorthy＠icicikp.com 04 Apr '05

04 Apr '05

My Comment: Please read the news item below. A library in such a sorry state of affairs -- is not worth fighting - not even for entry rights by civilians. We need to bother only when the library is worth something. Vyasamoorthy, P Express News Service http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=123613 Lucknow, April 3: THE board reads: Civilians not allowed! No, we are not taking you back to the British raaj but to our very own Cantt area. If you are a bibliophile and also a civilian in the cantonment area, you should be ready for the rude fact that the area does not offer library facility to those not a part of the defence forces. Those from the force have a well-equipped library on the main Mahatma Gandhi road but no civilian is allowed to have access to the books there, as it is open only for defence personnel and ex servicemen. Moved by the inconvenience of over one lakh civilians who live in the cantonment area, erstwhile chief executive officer of the Cantonment Board, Indrajit Kaur had taken the initiative to get an existing library in Sadar area, near the government hospital, renovated in the year 2000. Books worth lakhs of rupees were purchased and brought here for the first-of its-kind library for people of non-defence background in the area. The library had separate sections for children and adults depending on their tastes, but with the passage of time, the library has become an epitome of neglect. The situation has come to such a pass that it is rarely opened these days and no new books have been purchased for the last three years and the existing books are rotting. "We have raised the issue a number of times but no one is ready to pay heed to the genuine demands of the civilians. All efforts have gone in vain. The issue of library will not be solved forever unless the cantonment board holds its elections (which have been put on hold for the last two years following an SC intervention) ," maintains Shyam Narain Pandey, the former corporator of the cantonment board. ==================== Dr.P.Vyasamoorthy, Advisor, Virtual Information Centre, ICICI Knowledge Park, Genome Valley, Turkapally, Shameerpet Mandal, RR District, Hyderabad 500078 INDIA Email: vyasamoorthy(a)icicikp.com Phone - Office: +91(40)23480053 Fax: +91(40)23480007 Phone Residence: +91(40)27846631

Amazing : 2 GB from Gmail
by Jayadev P Hiremath 02 Apr '05

02 Apr '05

SAN JOSE: A year after unveiling a free e-mail service with a full gigabyte of storage, Google is doubling the capacity of each account and plans to keep bumping up the limit in the future. Once the upgrade takes effect on Friday, Gmail users will be able to store up to 2 gigabytes of e-mail and attachments for each account. Even more capacity will be made available after that as it becomes feasible, the company said. "Our goal is to make sure storage is no longer an issue for Web mail users," said Marissa Mayer, Google's director of consumer Web products. The announcement was made on the first anniversary of the Internet search engine's launch of Gmail, which surprised many users with its generous storage allotment and prompted rivals Yahoo and Microsoft to boost the capacity of their own free Web mail services.
