Dear Rakesh and Friends: Congrats on your work to promote Free Software. I have a suggestion. You may also promote open access to scientific and scholarly journal literature. For a clear idea of open access and its tremendous benefits, please look up "Open Access News" the daily blog of Prof. Peter Suber. Or, if you live in Bangalore, visit NCSI at IISc and talk to Mr Francis Jayakanth. If you live in New Delhi, visit NIC and meet Mr Sukhdev Singh or Dr Naina Panditha. They are running 'OpenMED' an open access archive for biomedical literature. If you are in Bombay, you may talk to Dr D K Sahu of MedKnow Publications. Thanks and best wishes. Dr. TBR - Heartfelt condolences from TCS

This is really shocking and un bearable loss to our fraternity. Dr Rajshekar was instrumental in very many initiatives, be it academics, research or the industry. I still remember the starting days of NCSI (1983) with Dr Raj, Harish, tulsi, Kapaleaswaran, Seena & others . Both NCSI and Dr Rajshekar grew to great heights, complimenting each other's strengths & success. It will certainly create a void and wd take a long time to come to terms. Our respectful condolences to his family both at home and work. ( Will someone give more details of the unfortunate incident / accident ?) Melissa of OSI and UNESCO had recognised his worth and invited him to some conferences and workshops. I always thought he was very good in his work. In fact, I had to face some harsh comments from other Indian colleagues when I mentioned in a discussion list that NCSI was a good training centre for young Indian librarians. He is no more. Why should such an accomplished expert die when he has so much more to give to the rest of us, I do not understand. Nature's ways are inscrutable. Sad demise of Dr.T.B.Rajashekar - Lose of An Inspiration
by Sukhdev Singh 06 Jun '05

I am greatly pained to hear the sad demise of Dr.T.B.Rajashekar. It was difficult to believe as only few days back he replied to my personal email commenting on OpenMED [ http://openmed.nic.in ]. Dr. Rajashekar was the key inspiration to me for OpenMED. He was one of the great professional we had in our times. His contribution to the profession and his inspiration to many young professionals, especially for initiating the Open Access Movement in India, will be remembered for ages. My heart felt condolences for bereaved family and pray almighty for his soul to rest in peace. --Sukhdev Singh, Principal Systems Analyst, Bibliographic Informatics Division, National Informatics Centre, New Delhi

Dr T B Rajashekar
by Prafulla Chandra 06 Jun '05

Dear All, I vaguely remember having a glimpse of Dr T B Rajashekar during the Caliber meet held at the University of Madras. Although I didn't have any opportunity to meet him personally or to talk to him, I could form a mental picture of the type of person he was through his rare but measured, sensitive and considerate postings to the LIS- Forum, which he moderated so successfully with tremendous impact. For some inexplicable reasons, over the years my heart was filled with admiration, affection and high respect for this humane personality who provided inspiring leadership to many a LIS professional like me. During my earlier years, I used to copy and paste some messages to LIS-Forum. This used to create problems. Dr Rajashekar sent a detailed reply on the proper procedure to be followed while posting messages. I repeated the same mistakes a couple of times. Even then, he didn't spike even a single message of mine. He used to send a personal message, marked with utmost politeness and considerateness. It is very rare to find such finest human qualities these days. When I first learnt about this shocking news on Saturday, it was a numbing experience. I felt as if we have lost one of our family members. The news is particularly more painful in the light of the fact that our National Knowledge Commission has just been constituted. Dr Rajashekar would be made significant contribution to its activities had he been alive. I express my heartfelt condolensces to the members of the bereaved family. T.V. Scientists and research students in developing countries, where libraries are poor, will gain access to all these archives. And that will certainly have a beneficial impact on the science they do. Thanks once again. I am sure many vice chancellors and directors of research laboratories in India, China, Brazil, and other developing countries will take to open access soon. Recently the Indian MEDLARS centre at the National Informatic Centre in New Delhi set up OpenMED, an archive for biomedical research. We are keenly looking forward to it getting populated with papers quickly. Friends: FireFox allows typing in a language withou the language keyboard. At least it is possible for Urdu, commonly spoken in Northwest India and Pakistan. Please check if such a facility is available for other languages, especially the many African languages. Someone in the list may please alert Prof. Adama Samasekou; I am unable to reach him by email. Re: [LIS-Forum] Sad demise of Dr. T B Rajashekar

Yes Stevan, it is the same Raja. Melissa of OSI and UNESCO had recognised his worth and invited him to some conferences and workshops. Yahoo! comes out with intelligent search tool
by Mailing List Manager 03 Jun '05

Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2005 02:16:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Rashid Hussain <ras_botlib(a)yahoo.co.in> Yahoo! introduced a new search tool, Mindset, which enables users to search and to sort the search results on the basis of commercial or informational value. The beta version, available as an online tool, allows the users to view what they want unlike existing search tools that give mega piles of unorganized information. In Mindset, search queries can be adjusted by moving a slider located on top of the search page, to the left or right to determine the nature of results wanted -- commercial or informational. It is significant that Yahoo! has quietly come out with this innovative tool after the much-publicized personalized Google home page was launched a couple of days back. Mindset is located on the Yahoo Research Labs' site Yahoo Next. The default setting of the slider shows results based on Yahoo's normal listing, while moving it to the right will make the results arranged on an informational basis and to the left on a commercial basis. Yahoo said Mindset is based on machine learning process, which carries out the search through algorithms developed so that the results are thrown on a continuous scale raging from "very commercial" to "very non-commercial". = = = = = = = = = = = Rashid Hussain Siddiqui ADIS 2nd Year Student Documentation Research & Training Centre(DRTC) Indian Statistical Institute 8th Mile Mysore Road Bangalore : 560059 Phone No. : 080-28483975

New .xxx domain will be reserved for porn
by Mailing List Manager 03 Jun '05

Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2005 12:38:41 +0530 From: Farooque Shaheen <Farooque.Shaheen(a)caritor.com> The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) yesterday approved a plan for pornographic Web sites to use new addresses that end with ".xxx," something numerous groups and U.S. political leaders have been seeking to try to prevent sexually explicit content from landing on the screens of young Internet users. ICANN, the nonprofit organization that oversees technical matters related to the Internet, said it will begin negotiations with ICM Registry Inc. to resolve commercial and technical issues associated with operating the .xxx top-level domain (TLD). The decision in favor of establishing a virtual red-light district for providers of pornographic content and their customers represents a U-turn for ICANN, which rejected ICM's first application for the .xxx TLD in November 2000. Reasons for the objection are published in a document available on ICANN's Web site. XML will be the default file format for next MS Office
by Mailing List Manager 02 Jun '05

02 Jun '05

Date: Thu, 2 Jun 2005 09:43:56 +0530 From: Farooque Shaheen <Farooque.Shaheen(a)caritor.com> Microsoft Corp. announced that the next version of its Office software will use Internet-friendly XML technology as the default file format for documents created in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The new format will make it easier for other programs to read Office documents, an improvement the software titan says is aimed at boosting workers' productivity. XML, short for eXtensible Markup Language, is designed for sharing diverse data across different systems with a uniform appearance. Previously, Office saved files in a format that doesn't always translate well when opened in other programs. The current version, Office 2003, already supports XML but some users have complained that it is clunky and documents don't always translate well from that format either.
