Banglore- 560059 DRTC Students' Colloquium on Information Service in Digital Environment Abstract The environment in which the information services are to be provided have changed significantly. These changes are mostly the result of technological changes i.e. emphasis on the use of modern information technology, developments of computer technology and telecommunication technology. Thus the concept of libraries has changed and digital library is an emerging trend in the present information technology era. There are different types of digital information services and almost all are converging in the services provided by the digital libraries. Digital information service, though looks easy to be provided, poses its own challenges in terms of metadata, digital collection development, copyright, preservation, cost, technology obsolescence, etc. In the colloquium we are going to discuss the issues relating to different types of digital information services, how are they provided, how they are going to help in research and education and the importance of open sources. OA in New Zealand

Thanks very much Arthur for circulating the good news. A number of countries (and institutions) are implementing open access policies and are setting up open access archives. Whatever may be the benefit to those countries and institutions, one thing is for sure. Scientists and research students in developing countries, where libraries are poor, will gain access to all these archives. And that will certainly have a beneficial impact on the science they do. Thanks once again. I am sure many vice chancellors and directors of research laboratories in India, China, Brazil, and other developing countries will take to open access soon. Recently the Indian MEDLARS centre at the National Informatic Centre in New Delhi set up OpenMED, an archive for biomedical research. We are keenly looking forward to it getting populated with papers quickly. Friends: FireFox allows typing in a language withou the language keyboard. At least it is possible for Urdu, commonly spoken in Northwest India and Pakistan. Yes Stevan, it is the same Raja. Melissa of OSI and UNESCO had recognised his worth and invited him to some conferences and workshops. I always thought he was very good in his work. In fact, I had to face some harsh comments from other Indian colleagues when I mentioned in a discussion list that NCSI was a good training centre for young Indian librarians. He is no more. Why should such an accomplished expert die when he has so much more to give to the rest of us, I do not understand. Nature's ways are inscrutable. The beta version, available as an online tool, allows the users to view what they want unlike existing search tools that give mega piles of unorganized information. In Mindset, search queries can be adjusted by moving a slider located on top of the search page, to the left or right to determine the nature of results wanted -- commercial or informational. It is significant that Yahoo! has quietly come out with this innovative tool after the much-publicized personalized Google home page was launched a couple of days back. Mindset is located on the Yahoo Research Labs' site Yahoo Next. The default setting of the slider shows results based on Yahoo's normal listing, while moving it to the right will make the results arranged on an informational basis and to the left on a commercial basis. ICANN, the nonprofit organization that oversees technical matters related to the Internet, said it will begin negotiations with ICM Registry Inc. to resolve commercial and technical issues associated with operating the .xxx top-level domain (TLD). The decision in favor of establishing a virtual red-light district for providers of pornographic content and their customers represents a U-turn for ICANN, which rejected ICM's first application for the .xxx TLD in November 2000. The new format will make it easier for other programs to read Office documents, an improvement the software titan says is aimed at boosting workers' productivity. XML, short for eXtensible Markup Language, is designed for sharing diverse data across different systems with a uniform appearance. Previously, Office saved files in a format that doesn't always translate well when opened in other programs. The current version, Office 2003, already supports XML but some users have complained that it is clunky and documents don't always translate well from that format either. Led by more than 200 U.S. universities working with industry and government, Internet2 develops and deploys advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education. According to the announcement, the LC plans to collaborate with the Internet2 community and leverage its advanced network infrastructure to facilitate wide-scale digital preservation projects, to enhance the development of an Internet-based database of U.S. newspapers, and to assist with its educational outreach programs. OCLC Improves Digital Collection Management Software

The new version, to be released in June, was developed in close consultation with CONTENTdm user groups and features increased security and other enhancements. CONTENTdm software offers a complete set of tools to store, manage, and deliver digital collections?such as historical documents, photos, newspapers, audio, and video?on the Web. Newest features include: � Fast multiple document entry � Increased security for items and collections to better protect copyrighted or other restricted materials � Detailed reports that show how online items and collections are being used � Additional digital repository features � Linking to WorldCat for worldwide visibility of digital collections CONTENTdm is distributed by OCLC Online Computer Library Center, the world?s largest library cooperative. Metadata for many of these digital collections is being added to the WorldCat database of items held in libraries. Once in WorldCat, special collection items can be found by searching the database or searching the Web. Items in WorldCat can now be discovered through search engines like Google and Yahoo! Search as part of the OCLC Open WorldCat program. Date: Wed, 01 Jun 2005 00:39:09 -0500 From: Ghulam Jeelani Shah <jeelani4(a)lycos.com> Respected Sir It is here to mention the deteriorating situation of libraries in cities in general and far flung areas in particular.I am from Srinagar,J & K.The district library here although is a huge building but unable to satisfy the basic needs of its users.Same is the situation of city central library and other public libraries.The main cause is the lack of professional interest and desire to enlighten the name of our profession.Our colleagues working in such libraries work there for the sake of duty but not for the sake of their profession.We actually have forgotten the importance of our profession and we are still treating it from its traditional perspective.Perhaps either we do not know or we deliberately keep our eyes closed in front of the fact that western world went for full automation of their collection in the last century.But we are not able to provide the satisfactory reference services to our users.It is not the case that there is nothing in our hands although we have financial barriers and we have limited manpower,we can go for the cooperation-cooperation with our colleagues,with other libraries either at local level or regional level and even at national level.This can at least help us to reach that satisfactory level where our users will feel that their needs are fulfilled to some extent.So have a pause-THINK-and join hands.Remember if we will let our users to read,we will let our Nation to lead.
