Becoming a Librarian

When I defended my dissertation at the University of Toronto in 1993, I was worried about my prospects for employment on the tenure track in English. Five years earlier, my adviser had been encouraging when I had proposed writing an interdisciplinary study of Restoration and 18th-century music drama. I wrote a respectable dissertation on the interrelations of music and theater -- on John Dryden, Henry Purcell, John Gay, and George Frideric Handel -- one that earned praise from my committee and from which I was eventually to publish three long articles in standard academic journals. By the time of my defense, I had some teaching experience, had presented a number of conference papers, and had shown my well-roundedness -- artistically and administratively -- by running a successful baroque-music chamber ensemble in Toronto for five years. Still, I was worried. The job market was abysmal; moreover, while I was a U.S. citizen, I was applying to American colleges and universities from a Canadian graduate program. I suspected that I would be at a considerable disadvantage for this reason alone, because I had gathered that many American academic employers seem to strongly favor graduates of American institutions. Plus, I had already cast about for jobs at the MLA meeting the preceding year, and had no nibbles at all. Yet it was not until I went on the job market with the all-important "Ph.D. in hand" that I realized exactly how grim my prospects were. Despite some initial interest, search committees proved not to be falling all over themselves to embrace my expertise. They seemed at a loss to appreciate what I might do for their departments. Over the next few years, those departments that told me anything about my rejection offered some version of the explanation that I was "too specialized." This made no sense to me: Isn't the whole point of a doctoral dissertation to demonstrate deep knowledge in whatever corner of your discipline you choose? I gather what they meant was not that I was too specialized, but that I was not specialized in ways or in matters to which they could relate. For the time being, I was able to survive on adjunct work and on tutoring at writing centers. I assumed that eventually some door would open; all I had to do was keep demonstrating my commitment to the profession by being a model teacher and scholar. Six years after completing my Ph.D., I had worked at as many colleges -- including some really good ones like MIT. I had taught freshman composition, medieval and Renaissance survey courses, "Foundation of Western Civilization," Shakespeare, "Fiction to 1832," you name it. I had published several articles and book chapters and had more in the works; had presented additional conference papers; and had won postdoctoral fellowships to conduct research at libraries including Harvard University's, the Huntington Library, and the British Library. I had also hand-crafted nearly 500 cover letters, tailored as many CV's to particular jobs, and spent far more than any adjunct could be expected to pay on photocopying, dossier requests, and postage. Instead of increasing my marketability, my achievements resulted in ever-more-deafening silence from prospective employers. Meanwhile, although I enjoyed interacting with students in the classroom, the onerous task of grading was getting me down, as were the low pay and the ineligibility for benefits. Add to this the frustration of feeling that, unless a miracle occurred, I would probably never be allowed to teach a high-enough level course to share what I liked most about academe -- the research process -- with my students. After an on-campus interview at a typical state college for a job teaching four courses each semester, including two sections of "developmental" (read: remedial) English every term -- a job that I was nonetheless not offered -- I was fed up. It was time for a career change. Since the first days of graduate school, I had been devoted to library work, and had developed great respect for the research librarians who had helped me unearth the countless treatises, pamphlets, play texts, and musical scores I needed to produce my scholarship. I was good at both knowing what to look for and finding necessary materials in libraries myself, particularly rare-book libraries. About the time of the state-college rejection, a friend who was a library director in Boston (where I was living at the time), and who was familiar with both my skills and my frustration, suggested I pursue a career in academic librarianship; she even offered to help get me started by forwarding my CV to other librarians she knew. Unfortunately, I had just attended a nonprofit job fair along with, it seemed, every inhabitant of the city of Boston. The crowds were wrapped around Mass. Ave and Huntington all the way to the Museum of Fine Arts. What jobs were on offer? Box-office clerk, file clerk, and the like. Thus, when my librarian friend offered to help, I was in such despair that all efforts felt hopeless; Every option seemed like the dead end that teaching and nonprofits had proved to be. Still, something in me growled, "Just give it a chance." I met with two Harvard librarians, and to my delight, both said instantly that a Ph.D. in English and a master's in library science would make a "powerful combination" of credentials for a future librarian. One even helped me get a job as a library assistant at Widener Library, and I gratefully accepted. Encouraged by this happy turn of events, I applied to Simmons College's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, was accepted, and believed I was finally on my way. Of course, there was still a little matter of tuition to worry about. Did I dare assume any further debt, given my precarious financial circumstances? I felt I had no choice but to go forward; I bit the bullet and took out additional student loans. After working in technical services at Harvard for a year, now with a semester of library school behind me, I applied for the job of library associate for collection maintenance and public services (responsible for the day-to-day operations of the main library) at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I was offered this job and learned many further skills -- mainly managerial -- while completing my degree at Simmons. Between Harvard and the master's program, I learned the ropes of librarianship and had fun doing so; I even learned the art of artist's bookmaking and got academic credit for it. The next challenge would be finding a job as a professional librarian. As I approached graduation from Simmons, I attended a job fair there, at which, to my utter amazement, two representatives from Yale appeared. Tentative, I approached them. One, my current boss, said that Yale was looking for a librarian for literature in English. I already knew that, having scoured the job ads for months, but I thought there was no way I would be seriously considered, given that, in the scheme of things, I had barely begun my transition to academic librarianship. Nevertheless, he encouraged me to apply, saying that we were in a seller's market and that Yale really needed but was having trouble attracting qualified subject specialists. To my further amazement, he followed up with a phone call early the next week, urging me to apply to Yale. Yale offered me the job less than a month from the date of the Simmons fair, and I remain happily ensconced in my current position. I have landed on my feet at long last. My position at Yale offers multiple rewards. I am the collection development specialist or "selector" for all of Sterling Memorial Library's and Cross Campus Library's materials related to literatures in English: print, microform, and digital. That means I manage a six-figure budget, one of the largest Yale library portfolios. I run the undergraduate and graduate bibliographic instruction programs -- some mandatory, some elective -- for the English department in my capacity as their library liaison. That means I have a lot of direct contact with students, both in the classroom and in follow-up, one-on-one sessions. It also means that every day I teach my favorite subject of all: library research skills. Let me end with a plug for the importance of teaching such skills. Julie Walker, executive director of the American Association of School Librarians, says that most students will have multiple careers, so the knowledge they gain in college will not serve them throughout their lives: "It will be their ability to navigate information that will matter." A Matter of Degrees By TODD GILMAN First Person Personal experiences on the job market Previous articles Easy-to-print version E-mail this story If you're a Ph.D. in the humanities, do you need a master's degree in library and information science to pursue a career as an academic librarian or as a curator of special collections? That question has lately generated impassioned arguments among Ph.D.'s who seek to enter the field of librarianship, as well as among librarians and curators concerned over the integrity of their profession. My qualified answer is yes, the library-science credential is essential -- unless the Ph.D. really, truly, and demonstrably has the equivalent experience. Before I elaborate, let me review my own background: I'm a Ph.D. in English who switched gears in the face of an abysmal faculty-job market, earned a master's in library science, and landed on my feet as an academic librarian at Yale University. Admittedly, Ph.D.'s who attend library school may or may not acquire such earth-shaking skills and wide-ranging theoretical knowledge as will justify the seemingly unreasonable outlay of time, effort, and expense required of one who has already endured the tribulations of a doctoral program. That is, at least in part, the motivation and justification for a new fellowship program and other recent initiatives that promise to set humanities Ph.D.'s on the fast (and free or low-cost) track to academic librarianship while bypassing most if not all library-school requirements. Still, the M.L.I.S., short for master's in library and information science (it's also known in some quarters as the M.L.S., for master's of library science), continues to serve as both a practical and an intellectual entreé into professional librarianship. What's more, the M.L.I.S. protects the library profession from becoming degraded in the way that teaching has been in academe. As a rule, Ph.D.'s do fine if they land a tenure-track job in their discipline. They get respect, decent pay, benefits, research leave, and promotions based on merit. But that's a big if. A frightening percentage of Ph.D.'s who seek to teach these days wind up slogging away as adjuncts. According to John W. Curtis of the American Association of University Professors, "The most recent comprehensive figures from the Department of Education show that in fall 2001, 44.5 percent of all faculty were in part-time positions -- nearly all without tenure -- and an additional 19.2 percent of faculty were in full-time, non-tenure-track positions." Why has that happened? Because the supply greatly outweighs the demand. Even more insulting, Ph.D. adjuncts are so hungry that academic departments can further cheat them by offering the same low pay (or close to it), ineligibility for benefits and promotion, and so on, which are offered to those with no more than an M.A. Those Ph.D.'s are denied a living wage because in the eyes of academic departments -- to echo Gertrude Stein -- an adjunct is an adjunct is an adjunct. That despite significant differences between a Ph.D. and an M.A. in the extent and cost of their education, teaching experience, and (more often than not) publishing records. Earning the lofty Ph.D., therefore, fulfills its promise for only a lucky few -- the tenured and tenure-track -- while the vast majority drift away on the ice floe. The value of the Ph.D. has been degraded indeed. For the library profession to admit Ph.D.'s to our profession without the M.L.I.S. would result in a flooded market and would condemn librarians to experience the same miserable, exploitative conditions so many Ph.D.'s now suffer. Equally damaging, hiring too many Ph.D.'s who skipped the M.L.I.S. training could create a glass ceiling for librarians who have that degree but no Ph.D. They would become (in status terms) the nurses to these doctors -- even though this particular breed of doctors is not qualified to give orders to such nurses. In fact, the nurses would wind up teaching the doctors their jobs while still being held in lower esteem, a bitter irony that would force library morale down the tubes. And of course the library would then be run by those with the least experience in the profession. Irrespective of such potential dire consequences, we must consider the question of professional standards. What exactly have M.L.I.S.-trained librarians learned that those with Ph.D.'s haven't? Analytical, descriptive, physical, and textual bibliography. The history of books and printing. Issues in cataloging library materials. The book trade -- current, rare, out of print, or all of those, including how best to manage vendors, approval plans, and standing orders. How to identify appropriate collecting levels for different subjects in different kinds and sizes of libraries. How to analyze a given library collection for purposes of, say, transfer to remote storage, filling in gaps, or preservation. How to analyze the pros and cons of a given electronic database or reference resource. How to manage acquisitions and other budgets. Digital library inititatives. The composition and scope of the essential bibliographic utilities like WorldCat, Eureka, and ESTC. How best to search any of the myriad electronic databases licensed by the modern library. What archivists do, how they do it, and why. You get the idea. Don't get me wrong: As I have said in my previous columns, I believe that academic librarianship is a great career alternative for many humanities Ph.D.'s who choose not to teach. I also believe that many library-school courses, as currently taught, leave much to be desired, and that library schools could never even hope to provide the deep subject expertise that scholars acquire in doctoral programs and that is so vital to much academic library work. Some Ph.D.'s who wish to be librarians doubtless have some of the training and experience necessary (particularly those who possess the aptitude to be librarians and are well-versed in bibliography), but they most certainly do not have enough of either to be taken seriously as library professionals. To argue that because you have spent years in libraries you are qualified to run one strikes me as claiming that because you have been visiting the dentist and brushing and flossing your teeth all your life you can perform a root canal. The creation of the profession of librarianship was an innovation of the late 19th century, by which point libraries had become too complicated to be run by dilettantes from academic departments. Hiring such people now to run our libraries -- which are vastly more complicated than those that gave rise to our profession -- sets us back over a hundred years. Indeed, the notion that we need professional librarians to run a modern library is even more valid today than it was in Melville Dewey's age. Although I have taken the position that the M.L.I.S. remains and should remain the necessary minimum credential, I must acknowledge that Ph.D.'s without the master's and with no background in librarianship still occasionally are hired by academic libraries, especially as curators of special collections at Ivy League and a few other major universities. That happens because, unfortunately, some senior administrators overvalue the prestige of the Ph.D. degree and undervalue the M.L.I.S. Librarianswho know that the master's and the training and experience it represents are what qualify a candidate to perform the jobreact to such hiring practices the way that senior faculty members would to learning that an M.A. in English with no teaching experience had been made head of their English department. Who can blame us? So while you might luck out and land one of those quirky plum jobs, if you hope to stay mobile in the library profession over the long term, you simply must earn the M.L.I.S. Congrats to our Dept of LIS

Dear All, I would like to share the good things happening in our Dept.of Lib and Information Science, Univ. of Mysore, Mysore. I am sending this so that other Universities can also do similar things where our community students can have the oppurtunities to grow better. First thing I would like to share is about the Campus interview (No, it is not about BE but our own LIS). Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) had conducted campus interview in our Dept. and have selected two girl candidates who appeared for the written test and then faced two rounds of interviews, first round in our dept. and the second in Chennai and finally got through successfully. One student is of Master of Information Management (the first IM course in Indian Universities) and the other is MLISc. Both are lucky enough to draw 5 digit salary (just think how many of us struggled in the beginning to draw a four digit salary, that too the first digit starting only with 1or 2). My sincere thanks to our dept and also to TCS for the campus interview which is first of its kind. Apart from this one student was successful in NET last year(2004) and one student was successful this year, congrats to them and my thanks to them for making the dept proud. Also so many useful events are being conducted by MYLISA. The initiative on communication and personlity development classes is too good for the students and so many have benefitted from this too. Paper clippings competition is conducted and is very interesting one too, wherein we had to collect news about LIS and related articles (I am a proud winner(2004) but not to mention I got second, more funnily out of only 2 serious participants). I would like to point out that students get to read news papers and the same could be asked to be put in the GSDL so that a student gets the idea how to collect in GSDL. Special thanks to Shalini Mam for this. Other than this I would like to request the faculty to encourage students in writing papers for the conferences and journals and this must be made compulsary so the student gets good exposure in writing as well as to the LIS field. The first websites for mobile devices, which will be fit for a small screen and limited memory and bandwidth, will be ready in 2006. A9 launched OpenSearch

"We want OpenSearch to do for search what RSS has done for content." OpenSearch is a collection of technologies, all built on top of popular open standards, to allow content providers to publish their search results in a format suitable for syndication. You can see how this works on A9.com. Many sites today return search results as a tightly integrated part of the website itself. Unfortunately, those search results can't be easily reused or made available elsewhere, as they are usually wrapped in HTML and don't follow any one convention. OpenSearch offers an alternative: an open format that will enable those search results to be displayed anywhere, anytime. Rather than introduce yet another proprietary or closed protocol, OpenSearch is a straightforward and backward-compatible extension of RSS 2.0, the widely adopted XML-based format for content syndication. Any site that has content-and a search box-can choose to return results in OpenSearch RSS. This includes travel sites, classifieds, encyclopedias.... If you can provide search results for something, it probably can fit into the OpenSearch model. Returning OpenSearch results is easy-the format is the standard set of XML elements, plus three additional elements designed to support navigation between pages. OpenSearch is comprised of: OpenSearch RSS: XML format for providing open search results. OpenSearch Description Documents: XML files that identify and describe a search engine. OpenSearch Aggregators: Sites, such as A9.com, that can display OpenSearch results. OpenSearch is not a search engine-it is a way for search engines to publish their search results in a standard and accessible format. And because OpenSearch is built on top of standard RSS, existing tools-such as blog readers-can read OpenSearch results natively. After several months of development, Elsevier, Inc. announced the initial release of xqDoc, an open source XQuery documentation tool. See details at http://www.xqdoc.org XQuery, under development by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) (http://www.w3.org/XML/Query) is a new query/programming language based on XML and used in conjunction with XML databases such as MarkLogic (http://www.marklogic.com) a commercial database, and eXist (http://exist.sourceforge.net) on the open source side. As XQuery applications became more complex, it became evident that a tool was needed to assist with documenting the ever growing and equally complex XQuery modules. xqDoc provides a simple vendor neutral solution for documenting XQuery library and main modules, as well as tools to generate a user friendly presentation of this documentation and cross referencing information. This is being accomplished through (4) specific components: 1. xqDoc proposes a new commenting convention that extends the currently defined XQuery comment style. This convention is modeled after Java's Javadoc commenting style, and provides a simple, uniform way to document XQuery source code. 2. xqDoc defines a standard xqDoc XML schema. This schema provides a neutral format for storing information for user-defined XQuery modules as well as 3rd party proprietary functions that may be implemented in other programming languages. 3. xqDoc provides a vendor neutral Java based conversion package that parses an XQuery library or main module and generates an xqDoc XML document modelled after the xqDoc XML schema. Support for specific XML database platforms is provided by writing vendor specific drivers to store the generated xqDoc XML into the vendor's database. 4. xqDoc provides a vendor neutral presentation component, consisting of XQuery main modules and a library module, that can process the xqDoc XML document(s) stored in a XML database and generate an extensively hyperlinked XHTML navigation interface. KALA being apex state level LIS Professionl Association we need to attend this meeting in large number and make the meeting a success and more meaningful event. There is a need to look at the meeting with a broad and true spirit to fulfill the aspirations of peers who have nurtured KALA all these days. The entire Govering Body and members need to be active not just the key office bearers. There should be good coordination between various LIS Associations atleast at state level. We have to set up a Web site of KALA with all details and links to other LIS Professional Associations within and out side the country. It is my personal request to all members of KALA to attend the meeting and give useful suggestions and elect competent Governing Body representing all sectors like Schools, Colleges, Engineering & Medical colleges, Universities, Institutions, Corporate Bodies, etc. It is my feeing that participation should be by all regions of Karnataka and also out of state and not just Bangalore based members. Yahoo rolls out SMS web search for mobiles

Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search service that lets users in US send short text message queries and retrieve results from their mobile phones. BEIJING, July 8 -- Yahoo has rolled out a new mobile search service that lets users in US send short text message queries and retrieve results from their mobile phones. The new service, called SMS Short Message Service) Search, is designed to let people get specific information, such as weather, stock quotes and business addresses, and use shortcuts on the keypad to take less time for users to input their queries. For example, typing in "w" and the ZIP code will retrieve a short weather forecast, Yahoo said. The tool was announced Thursday. If the information sought is not included in the first set of results, users can request and receive additional input. People also can save the responses and reply to them repeatedly over time to get updates of the same information, such as stock quotes for a particular company. In addition, Yahoo also said that it was expanding its Yahoo Search on Mobile, which was previously available only on advanced phones such as the Treo. Now any Wireless Application Protocol-enabled phone, which includes most mobile phones with a color screen, can do Web searches. Last October, Google, the No. 1 Web search engine, launched its own service that let users use mobile phones or handheld devices to do Web searches using text messages, or short message service, which is also known as SMS. Unlike Google, however, once a user retrieves a reply from Yahoo's text message search service, they can refresh it without having to retype the query, said Thad White, who runs mobile services for Yahoo. Waiting for Positive Response

Dear fellow professionals, If you remember, last week I had made an appeal. However, I got just one response that too from NCSI. I am still hopeful that professionals working in institutions dealing with Bio-Medical Sciences will make their scientist aware of self-archiving and OpenMED@NIC i.e. http://openmed.nic.in . Although it is not doing that bad, but still I feel, our professionals should take active interest in it. As of now it seems people from other fields are much more active and vocal. I therefore request you to make scientists of your organisation aware in self-arching. It really does NOT matter if they archive in OpenMED , http://openmed.nic.in or some other reliable and persistant archive. The thing that really matters is that WHAT IS OUR CONTRIBUTION in this Open Access and Self - Archiving movement. If you are planing to conduct such awareness programmes and need some of my time.
