The Audit people are pressing hard to conduct the Stock Verification. Being in the same system, u can better understand the problem. The library, which boasts a rare collection of books, used to be housed in the old building and was opened only on request. The new library will be open for reference everyday from 10 to 11.30 in the morning except Mondays. The shelves hold rare personal collections of late Dr K T Behanan, who used to be associated with institute. "Dr Behanan donated his entire collection before he passed away. We set up a library in his memory," said Y M Balakrishna, the institute's honorary secretary. The library got a further boost in 1963 when Dr Behanan's wife, M T Behanan, set up a permanent endowment for the institute for a substantial amount at the Canara Bank. "With the annual amount, more books are periodically add to the K.T. Behanan Library," adds Balakrishna. Among the large collection are eight volumes of the Encyclopaedia of World Art, 15 volumes of the Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology and entire collection on Sri Aurobindo, Srimad Bhagvad Gita, 24 volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, complete works of Sankaracharya, complete works of Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas, Balzac, Elliot, Holmes, Hawthorne, Poe, Thackeray besides modern self-help books. The institute has also added new books to its old library and the children's section. "The new block has just opened and more people are visiting it," says Balakrishna. Balakrishna said there are plans to include some magazines also at the new library. Some of Dr Behanan's collections have also been kept on shelves at the old block, where they can also be borrowed. ==================

OAI-PMH functionality in NewGenLib

Dear Friends I am happy to announce that NewGenLib, the library automation and networking software developed jointly by Kesavan Institute and Verus Solutions Pvt., Ltd. has now added functionality to harvest metadata from open access archive repositories that use either the Dublin Core or MARC-21 (MARC-XML) standards. The harvested metadata points to the URL of the digital content. The functionality also allows a library to archive publications of its own researchers in the library's catalogue database. Since NewGenLib allows networking of several libraries in its networking/consortium version, a Host library can harvest metadata from Associate libraries and vice versa. Other libraries that might want to harvest metadata from NewGenLib databases on the web can do so as records in Dublin Core, MARC-XML or in MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema), an XML schema, intended to carry selected data from existing MARC 21 records as well as to enable the creation of original resource description records. ALA accredited degree (MLIS) is needed for getting job in USA/Canada...

Hello, I received a plea from a library professional who emigrated to Canada. She has completed her B.Sc.(Physics); BLIS, MLIS (1998) from IGNOU. She has worked for British Council Library and few other institutions, she has about 10+ year experience in Library field. Now her MLIS degree is not considered as equivalent to MLS/MLIS of Canadian Universities, the authorities are asking for ALA accredited degree. She contacted ALA, they are saying she has to contact CLIP, UK and it is not replying to her. If anybody can help her on this issue, please write to her email id monasahu2000(a)yahoo.com [I had made a follow up on this issue quite some time back in some listserv, they were discussing now a days few universities/institutions are offering jobs for Library Professionals of India, China etc. nationals(where there is no ALA accredited degree offered). Five years earlier, my adviser had been encouraging when I had proposed writing an interdisciplinary study of Restoration and 18th-century music drama. I wrote a respectable dissertation on the interrelations of music and theater -- on John Dryden, Henry Purcell, John Gay, and George Frideric Handel -- one that earned praise from my committee and from which I was eventually to publish three long articles in standard academic journals. By the time of my defense, I had some teaching experience, had presented a number of conference papers, and had shown my well-roundedness -- artistically and administratively -- by running a successful baroque-music chamber ensemble in Toronto for five years. Still, I was worried. The job market was abysmal; moreover, while I was a U.S. citizen, I was applying to American colleges and universities from a Canadian graduate program. I suspected that I would be at a considerable disadvantage for this reason alone, because I had gathered that many American academic employers seem to strongly favor graduates of American institutions. Plus, I had already cast about for jobs at the MLA meeting the preceding year, and had no nibbles at all. Yet it was not until I went on the job market with the all-important "Ph.D. in hand" that I realized exactly how grim my prospects were. Despite some initial interest, search committees proved not to be falling all over themselves to embrace my expertise. They seemed at a loss to appreciate what I might do for their departments. Over the next few years, those departments that told me anything about my rejection offered some version of the explanation that I was "too specialized." This made no sense to me: Isn't the whole point of a doctoral dissertation to demonstrate deep knowledge in whatever corner of your discipline you choose? I gather what they meant was not that I was too specialized, but that I was not specialized in ways or in matters to which they could relate. For the time being, I was able to survive on adjunct work and on tutoring at writing centers. I assumed that eventually some door would open; all I had to do was keep demonstrating my commitment to the profession by being a model teacher and scholar. Six years after completing my Ph.D., I had worked at as many colleges -- including some really good ones like MIT. I had taught freshman composition, medieval and Renaissance survey courses, "Foundation of Western Civilization," Shakespeare, "Fiction to 1832," you name it. I had published several articles and book chapters and had more in the works; had presented additional conference papers; and had won postdoctoral fellowships to conduct research at libraries including Harvard University's, the Huntington Library, and the British Library. I had also hand-crafted nearly 500 cover letters, tailored as many CV's to particular jobs, and spent far more than any adjunct could be expected to pay on photocopying, dossier requests, and postage. Instead of increasing my marketability, my achievements resulted in ever-more-deafening silence from prospective employers. Meanwhile, although I enjoyed interacting with students in the classroom, the onerous task of grading was getting me down, as were the low pay and the ineligibility for benefits. Add to this the frustration of feeling that, unless a miracle occurred, I would probably never be allowed to teach a high-enough level course to share what I liked most about academe -- the research process -- with my students. After an on-campus interview at a typical state college for a job teaching four courses each semester, including two sections of "developmental" (read: remedial) English every term -- a job that I was nonetheless not offered -- I was fed up. It was time for a career change. Since the first days of graduate school, I had been devoted to library work, and had developed great respect for the research librarians who had helped me unearth the countless treatises, pamphlets, play texts, and musical scores I needed to produce my scholarship. I was good at both knowing what to look for and finding necessary materials in libraries myself, particularly rare-book libraries. About the time of the state-college rejection, a friend who was a library director in Boston (where I was living at the time), and who was familiar with both my skills and my frustration, suggested I pursue a career in academic librarianship; she even offered to help get me started by forwarding my CV to other librarians she knew. Unfortunately, I had just attended a nonprofit job fair along with, it seemed, every inhabitant of the city of Boston. The crowds were wrapped around Mass. Ave and Huntington all the way to the Museum of Fine Arts. What jobs were on offer? Box-office clerk, file clerk, and the like. Thus, when my librarian friend offered to help, I was in such despair that all efforts felt hopeless; Every option seemed like the dead end that teaching and nonprofits had proved to be. Still, something in me growled, "Just give it a chance." I met with two Harvard librarians, and to my delight, both said instantly that a Ph.D. in English and a master's in library science would make a "powerful combination" of credentials for a future librarian. One even helped me get a job as a library assistant at Widener Library, and I gratefully accepted. Encouraged by this happy turn of events, I applied to Simmons College's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, was accepted, and believed I was finally on my way. Of course, there was still a little matter of tuition to worry about. Did I dare assume any further debt, given my precarious financial circumstances? I felt I had no choice but to go forward; I bit the bullet and took out additional student loans. After working in technical services at Harvard for a year, now with a semester of library school behind me, I applied for the job of library associate for collection maintenance and public services (responsible for the day-to-day operations of the main library) at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I was offered this job and learned many further skills -- mainly managerial -- while completing my degree at Simmons. Between Harvard and the master's program, I learned the ropes of librarianship and had fun doing so; I even learned the art of artist's bookmaking and got academic credit for it. The next challenge would be finding a job as a professional librarian. As I approached graduation from Simmons, I attended a job fair there, at which, to my utter amazement, two representatives from Yale appeared. Tentative, I approached them. One, my current boss, said that Yale was looking for a librarian for literature in English. I already knew that, having scoured the job ads for months, but I thought there was no way I would be seriously considered, given that, in the scheme of things, I had barely begun my transition to academic librarianship. Nevertheless, he encouraged me to apply, saying that we were in a seller's market and that Yale really needed but was having trouble attracting qualified subject specialists. To my further amazement, he followed up with a phone call early the next week, urging me to apply to Yale. Yale offered me the job less than a month from the date of the Simmons fair, and I remain happily ensconced in my current position. I have landed on my feet at long last. My position at Yale offers multiple rewards. I am the collection development specialist or "selector" for all of Sterling Memorial Library's and Cross Campus Library's materials related to literatures in English: print, microform, and digital. That means I manage a six-figure budget, one of the largest Yale library portfolios. I run the undergraduate and graduate bibliographic instruction programs -- some mandatory, some elective -- for the English department in my capacity as their library liaison. That means I have a lot of direct contact with students, both in the classroom and in follow-up, one-on-one sessions. It also means that every day I teach my favorite subject of all: library research skills. Let me end with a plug for the importance of teaching such skills. Julie Walker, executive director of the American Association of School Librarians, says that most students will have multiple careers, so the knowledge they gain in college will not serve them throughout their lives: "It will be their ability to navigate information that will matter." Value of LIS profession and professionals

Dear Members, This mail is with regard to the interview experience shared by Ms.Sri Laxmi: Once again the role of LIS professionals has been raised. Whenever such mails are posted to the forum, we get mails from other members of the forum asking our library professional associations to do something in this regard. I think our associations have restricted their role to organizing conferences/seminars etc. Our associations have bee requested many times through this forum. Are they listening our voice? Our associations should workout with UGC, NAAC, AICTE and related bodies to bring out some norms/guidelines as regards to the salaries of the LIS professionals in College libraries. Following is just a typical example of how interviews was conducted: Once my senior friend went for a interview for the post of librarian in some college in Bangalore. It was a interview of a kind. One of the interview committee member told him that he will be paid Rs.2000 pm and he is recruited here till the NAAC committee visit is over. That's all. No questions about his qualifications, experience etc. It has been seen that at the time of interview who so ever demands less salary will be recruited. We have innumerable examples of such typical interviews. Can anybody tell me how many college libraries have a permanent librarian post? How well paid the college librarians are? The need of the hour is that our so called library professional associations should come together with NAAC, UGC and AICTE and bring out some norms/guidelines as regards to the pay scale of library professionals. When I was studying MLISC my professor often use to say that "WE ARE IN SUCH A NOBLE PROFESSION WHERE WE ARE ALWAYS AT THE END OF GIVING, WHO ELSE OTHER THAN ALMIGHTY GOD, WHO IS ALWAYS AT THE END OF GIVING". It should not mean that we keep on serving our users without getting due credit and respectable salary........ These are my personal views and are not intended to critisize anybody. Government of India Comes Forward to Support Mission 2007: Every Village a Knowledge Centre Subbiah Arunachalam Distinguished Fellow M S Swaminathan Research Foundation Chennai 600 113, India New Delhi, 12 July 2005 India's Finance Minister, Mr Palaniappan Chidambaram, announced today that the Government of India would support the Mission 2007: Every Village a Knowledge Centre, to the tune of Rs 65,000 million [roughly US $1,500 million). He was speaking at the Second Convention of the National Alliance for Mission 2007: Every Village a Knowledge Centre, held at New Delhi. Conceived by Prof. M S Swaminathan, the man who brought in the Green Revolution to India, the Mission aims to usher in a knowledge revolution in India by connecting all the more than 600,000 villages of a India in a knowledge network by 15 August 2007, the 60th anniversary of India's Independence. After a series of meetings with a wide cross section of people from government, academia, civil society organizations and corporations, Prof. Swaminathan announced the Mission 2007 in mid 2004. As such a huge programme cannot be undertaken by any single organization, Swaminathan went on to build a National Alliance, perhaps the largest multi-stakeholder partnership in the field of ICT-enabled development in the world. There are more than 150 members in the Alliance including the University of California, Berkeley; MIT, Cambridge; IDRC, Ottawa; the Nasscom Foundation, New Delhi, and OneWorld. The first convention of the National Alliance was held in New Delhi in October 2004. The second convention took place in New Delhi on 11 and 12 July 2005. Among the people who spoke at the convention are His Excellency the President of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam; Mr P Chidambaram, the Finanace Minister of India; Mr Mani Shankar Iyer, Minister for Panchayati Raj; Mr M V Rajasekaran, Minister of State for Planning, and a number of senior government officials. The President Of India, Dr Abdul Kalam was very happy to see more than 135 elected Fellows of the National Virtual Academy for Rural Prosperity - all of them grassroots workers from rural India. Mr Mani Shankar Iyer suggested that the Village Knowledge Centres should preferably be established in collaboration with the Panchayati Raj (village level government) institutions and thus empower the village level leaders and the communities. -----

Hello, Here is an experience of an interview attended by by me at one of the academic college at Mysore. There was an adversitement in a news paper calling for the interview for the post of Librarian at one of the institution at Mysore. It was a walk in Interview. I went to the interview and I was passed. The next day they said me to join for their institution as librarian. The conditions were like , they wanted their library to be automated with in 1 month (with more than 1000 documents) without any assistant and many other things like it is a full time job, 700 students, should serve the institution, facility given to the students should be very good etc. etc.All the things needed to be done in a hightech pattern. Finally my turn came to ask about the pay scale. The reply was Rs 1500 per month. You cant get more than this because you will not be teaching any students,you will not be doing any other work like a teacher etc. What do you say about this? Good one on Passwords

Read it or forward it to your System administrator Back in the dark ages of the Internet as we know it -- before we had so many malware threats and Web application vulnerabilities -- strong passwords were the security solution. This was especially true in Windows after it was discovered just how easy it was to capture and crack LANMan passwords in NT. Even today, it seems that practically everyone (both inside and outside IT) has their own opinion on what it takes to create and enforce secure passwords. The consensus is that if we use uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters at least seven to eight characters in length, then our passwords are magically unbreakable. It's simply not true. Every year, I test a fairly large number of standalone Windows workstations, servers and domains for password vulnerabilities. Network managers occasionally tell me they know everyone has weak passwords, but most are completely unaware just how widespread the problem is. Based on what I've seen, most passwords that supposedly meet the "generally accepted" requirements can be guessed with some basic trial and error -- a nominal effort that can lead to high payoffs for the bad guys with little chance that they'll get caught. There are some legitimate password challenges that network managers struggle with. Many of these end up being serious security vulnerabilities that lead to risks most organizations aren't prepared to handle. The following are some common password management misconceptions along with an idea or two on hardening Windows security. Myth #1: Assigning all users passwords will help keep their workstations secure. Big mistake. Responsibility and accountability must be placed in the user's control. Otherwise, what incentive do they have to do better? Notice I didn't say that password policy enforcement should be placed in their hands. That's a different issue. Security decisions never should be placed in the hands of users. Rather, enforce strong passwords via written policy, GPOs or another password management system, and ongoing auditing. Also, what happens when a rogue or ex-network administrator abuses an innocent user's account? There's hardly an audit trail that can fix this. Myth #2: Having tight physical security will make systems safe against sniffers and password crackers. What happens when authentication for internal Citrix NFuse Web interfaces, Web applications and other systems are tied into Windows domain accounts? The password problem that was once just an internal issue is now opened up to the world. This is a big, big problem that's affecting more and more systems. Myth #3: Upper management can't force users to remember complex passwords, so it will just accept anything bad that may or may not occur. What I'm finding is that most upper managers and executives don't really understand the gravity of the problem. They think all users can be trusted, that no one shares their passwords, and that there's really not much to lose when a standard user account is compromised. Here's a trick to shed some light on the issue: Simply log in with basic user rights, and see what you can see on network servers and workstation shares. Perform basic text searches, and look for words such as "ssn," "credit card," "dob" and other things that users have been granted access. Your findings are sure to make even the biggest nonbelievers realize there's a security problem -- especially when combined with the technical vulnerability I mentioned in the point above. Myth #4: Requiring users to change passwords often will keep Windows secure. Again, this is another major misconception. What's the natural human tendency when we can't keep up with new passwords -- especially multiple passwords that must be changed every 30, 60 or 90 days? We write them down. This is a real tough one to prevent if users are forced to jump through unrealistic hoops in the name of security. The solution here is to create strong but easily remembered passwords (or better yet passphrases). And if they're never shared or suspected to have been compromised, why change them often if ever? The latter is what I always recommend. As long as we're forced to use passwords for our computing needs, I think passphrases are the only realistic solution. Build on the upper/lower/numerical/special character idea, but create passphrases that are long, impossible to crack and memorable. Once you explain it in simple terms and give good examples like "Man, I LOVE hard rock music!" your users' and executives' eyes will light up. It's virtually guaranteed.
