MULISSA event 5: Friday Talk Mysore University Library and Information Science Students Association (MULISSA), Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), University of Mysore, Mysoreorganized a lecture on �St. Agnes College information center - a Profile� by Smt. S.T. Sudha, Librarian, St. Agnes College, Mangalore on October 7, 2005 at 3.30 pm. She is at present dupted as a full time researcher at DLIS, Mysore under Faculty Improvement Programme. The lecture was arranged in the umbrella of �Friday Talk� series. Summary of the talk: St. Agnes College was established in the year 1921 and it is one of the leading women�s colleges in India and is known for imparting value-based education. The college is offering courses in arts, Science, commerce business management, and computer science. It also offers honors, diploma, certificate and other remedial courses. The college has been accorded �A� grade by NAAC in its assessment report. St. Agnes college information center is one of the pivotal centres for the college. Information center imparts formal and informal education indirectly through print and electronic media, advises the faculty in their scholarly pursuits. The information center helps the user community in curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities. Services are rendered to outsiders, faculty and students. It renders services like circulation, reference, CD-Rom, textual information service, reprography, newspaper clippings, index to articles of topics pertaining to different disciplines and other general topics, internet, scanning services and personal assistance to all the users. User education is imparted at the beginning of the year based on requirements of the users. The information center is putting its conscientious efforts to transform the readers from passive learners to voracious readers. Faculty members are requested to stimulate intellectual curiosity and imbibe self-learning skills among the students. The librarian has trained and motivated her staff members to synthesize technology and traditional print culture to ensure invaluable service to the user community. The information centre of the college has also organized a few workshops, seminars, exhibitions and image analysis events. Students asked a few questions on computerization, preparation required by library for NAAC assessment, method of stock verification, status of the librarians etc. Ms. B. Arun Google and Sun Microsystems announced a partnership on Tuesday that will offer Sun's word processing and spreadsheet software online through Google's websites and toolbars, creating a formidable rival to Microsoft's Office software package. The deal will allow users to access Sun's Openoffice files and work on projects from any personal computer, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday. Both companies declined earlier in the day to give details of the deal in advance of their formal announcement. However, shares in Sun rose 8 per cent to $4.54 in afternoon trading. Shares in Microsoft fell ahead of the announcement, on fears the partnership would create a serious challenge to the software company's dominance. Dear Sir, I am supportingthe argument by u on the captioned subject.The Librarian profession is not only debitted in academics level but the organizations like Reserve Bank of India has also not considering the promotional issue for their Librarians category. Here for general side cader every after 3 years there is a chance for promotion and for repeaters minimum 3 chances are considered. Even the Lounge supervisors, Security officers,engineers have chances after 3 years for next promotion but for Librarians there are nochances even they have completed more than 5 years. The job expected and responsibilities are increasing day by day. The requirements for one next promotion you must be Post graduate with first class whereas for other category, even a graduate with no grade has been called for. I am the solo asst Librarian since 1997 and brought up the library from its manual to computerised level. The oral feedback is excellent from management as well as other rhan RBI Users.Still no up gradation in my level.(I have represented very often and therefore feel like leaving the job) The nation is passing Information Act, National Digital Library, every year 1000s are coming out with certificate, graduate and postgraduate level but no job opportunities.Tell me what acition we should take in this regard.I shall be glad to know any fine solution and will be happy to help from our forum where the God fathers in this field are one of the speakers/ guides of the forum. Dear Vijaykumar, I also support your question. I have asked for solution from lisforum regarding job opprunities even for Library Certificate course which is run by all government. When your student asked this question really we have no other way but to tell them try your luck. Even for degree and post graduates the opportunities are least.In times and Nakuri dot com llike advertise news paper supplements never give exposures to this field except few academic where set/net is compusory. Why Librarians are supposed to go for this exams if they are not in teaching profession . Please guide us. kshipras

Dear Professional Colleagues I am looking for some information about the process of registration/copyrighting of case material developed by an individual/teacher/researcher /organisation etc. I understand that there exist a particular process which has to be followed in this regard. I also hear that there is some official agency in Hyderabad which grants such registration/ copy right etc and a particular documentation is required to apply there like certificate from the organisation involved in the development of case study about the genuineness of case material. As the qualifications prescribed by UGC for the direct post of Deputy Librarian is MLISc + 5 years experience in Asst. Librarian, it is justifiable to fix the qualifications for the post of Asst. Librarian as:- MLISc 55% + NET or 5 years Experience in Junior Libraian or equivalent (ie, the post just below the Asst. Libraian). The career advancement and other conditions like advance increments, etc. for libraians should be equal to that of teachers in colleges/universities. It is highly unjustifiable to equate the librarians with Asst. Registrars. In Kerala, all posts of Asst./Dy./Joint Registrar are filled by promotion. Their recruitment qualifications are only any Degree. Their promotion is far far sppedier than the teachers and other cadres. That is, an Asst. Registrar will normally be promoted to Dy.
