Oogling for Chemists - Chmoogle
by Mailing List Manager 05 Dec '05

05 Dec '05

Date: Sun, 4 Dec 2005 15:29:53 +0530 (IST) From: Subbiah Arunachalam <arun(a)mssrf.res.in> Friends: Spread the word among chemists. It is a boon to chemists. Arun ---- More on Chmoogle David Bradley, Oogling for Chemists, Reactive Reports, Issue #50. Excerpt: San Diego based eMolecules Inc has launched what one might consider to be the chemical equivalent of the Google search engine - "Chmoogle". The company describes Chmoogle as the world's leading free open-access chemistry search engine and its mission is to discover, curate, and index all of the public chemical information in the world, and make it available to the public. "The world's knowledge in chemistry is an invaluable resource", said Klaus Gubernator, eMolecule's Chief Executive Officer. "It lies dormant until it becomes searchable by every chemist. The language of chemistry is chemical structures. Chmoogle makes the world's chemistry searchable by structure. Just draw a molecule using your favorite structure drawing tool and hit Go!" "Currently, there are any number of excellent text search engines," Craig James, Chmoogle's Chief Technology Officer told us. "If you want to know everything about 'Alexander Fleming' (inventor of penicillin), they can help you," he adds. However, if you draw the penicillin molecule with your favorite chemical editor, can you search for it, James asks, "With Chmoogle you can." Before Chmoogle, there was no free Internet resource of this nature. It provides a genuine cheminformatics system that anyone could use to find information using a substructure search. A number of academic institutions have searchable databases, but they're usually focused on their particular field of science, and their search systems are often primarily for organizing only their data. Chmoogle's goal is to be the search system to index all of the world's publicly available chemical information....Chmoogle goes deeper than a superficial search of the latent chemical Web, as one would hope. It allows users to send queries, results and individual structures as links to their colleagues using email. This, the company says, will create an unparalleled collaborative environment for chemists worldwide. Chmoogle also provides "Chmoogle Free" code that users can embed into their own Web sites for direct access to Chmoogle, as well as hosted cheminformatics systems and full Web sites for chemical suppliers, pharmaceutical and other chemical industries. James does not see a conflict between Chmoogle and efforts to use the InChI. "Since Chmoogle will be crawling the Web looking for information, it may provide a valuable adjunct to their service: High-performance searches, combined with cross references to other places that Chmoogle has found the same molecule (for example, commercial vendors who have the molecule for sale, or other academic sites such as Zinc or PubChem)."

Text mining is a young interdisciplinary field that draws on information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, statistics and computational linguistics. As most of the information in the world (over 80%) is stored as text, text mining is believed to have a high commercial potential value. It has many applications, especially in information service sector, bio-informatics, humanities, intelligence communities and in other fields also. Recently, text mining is receiving much attention, several research groups around the world, as well as R&D departments of big companies, are doing research on text mining. This seminar will focus on several issues of text mining including: Themes: 1.Basic function of text mining 2.Text mining process 3.Architecture of text mining system 4.Techniques used in text mining 5.Application areas 6. SETTING UP SPECIAL EDUCATION ZONES
by Mailing List Manager 02 Dec '05

02 Dec '05

Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2005 23:22:05 -0800 (PST) From: alex arun <antony_alex2k(a)yahoo.com> The Hindu ; 12/01/2005 NASSCOM CHIEF FOR SETTING UP SPECIAL EDUCATION ZONES Bureaucracy in education is "constraining" its development and one way to remove the shackles is to set up Special Education Zones on the lines of Special Economic Zones, says Kiran Karnik, president, National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM). Interacting with mediapersons on the sidelines of `Information Technology, Information Technology-Enabled Services Industry-Academia Meet 2005' at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology here on Wednesday, Karnik said, "This Special Education Zone can be carried out on an experimental basis at four to five places and, if the model proves successful, it can be extended to all corners of the country." The constraints imposed by governments "make it difficult" for professional colleges to function, he pointed out. Karnik said those wanting to set up institutions in those zones should be able to do so with minimum hassles and run the institution with "complete autonomy." The colleges must be able to frame their own syllabi, fix the fee and decide on students' in-take. http://www.hindu.com/2005/12/01/stories/2005120106210500.htm

Again another opportunity to distribute widely to interested persons Sorry for cross posting or repeats. Tomas Allen IFLA / OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship 2007 Program Guidelines Contents Program Overview Selection Process and Award Notification Key Dates Provisions of Award Eligibility Limitations and Liabilities Application Procedures Qualifying Countries Program Overview The IFLA / OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program provides early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies. The program is jointly sponsored by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), OCLC Online Computer Library Center and the American Theological Library Association (ATLA). On an annual basis program sponsors select up to five individuals, including a theological librarian, to come to OCLCs headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA, for a four-week intensive program of lectures, seminars and mentoring. Topics and issues include information technologies and their impact on libraries, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship. During their visit to the United States, Fellows participate in seminars and workshops, visit selected North American libraries and cultural heritage institutions, and observe portions of an OCLC Members Council meeting. Key services and activities of program sponsors IFLA, OCLC and ATLA are highlighted. Visits to selected North American libraries, including the Library of Congress, and cultural heritage institutions provide an opportunity for Fellows to meet leading practitioners and discuss real-world solutions to the challenges facing libraries today. By observing a Members Council meeting, the Fellows gain insight into issues affecting global library cooperation and are exposed to the governance of a global library cooperative.
