From the SPARC announcement: The University of California Office of the President (UCOP) launched the UC Office of Scholarly Communication in 2004 to support and coordinate a plethora of diverse, cutting-edge initiatives that help scholars and researchers regain control of their work, while exploring innovative means of scholarly communication. This simple organizational act represented the culmination of work conducted over a ten-year period by UC administrators, faculty, and librarians who took a focused, activist stance to change the status quo. In the late 1990s, for example, UC initiated the California Digital Library and as part of it, the eScholarship repository. Since then it has moved from strength to strength. For example, it has developed groundbreaking contracts with publishers which have helped to curtail hyperinflation in the price of online journal subscriptions; developed guidance for faculty on ways to manage intellectual property and retain copyright; developed, through the academic faculty senate, a series of white papers advocating shifts in scholarly communication; established innovative new scholarly publishing programs and forged an electronic publishing alliance between the CDL and the University of California Press; and created a Scholarly Communication Officers group comprising senior librarians at each of the 10 UC branches to harmonize local and system-wide planning and action. For its extraordinarily effective institution-wide vision and efforts to move scholarly communication forward for the benefit of its faculty, students, and the public, SPARC has named UC a SPARC Innovator.... Dear Forum Members, Since there is an ongoing discussion about Computer Science "Journals" from India, I would like to share a peace of information with you all. According to the latest DST project study, there are only two Indian Journals qualified as "peer-reviewed journals" in Computer Science. They are 1. Journal of the Computer Society of India http://www.csi-india.org 2. Journal of Digital Information Management www.dirf.org/jdim (Source: Indian S &T Productivity- Report Submitted to DST/NSTMIS division 2006). A news item about this study will appear this month ISTE newsletter at http://www.isteonline.in. I have seen lists of Computer Science "Magazines" posted in the forums. The provision on the internet of 'Open Educational Resources', free at point of use and available to everyone, reflects The Open University's mission of promoting fair access for all....There will be one site that is primarily for learners, where material with suggested learning pathways will be offered. NCRA has setup world's largest radio telescope Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at metre wavelengths at Khodad, Narayangaon. NCRA is organising a 3-day workshop titled "Creating Digital Libraries using DSpace Open Source Software" during 24-26 July 2006 at its premises in the Pune University Campus. This is more apparent in the case of developing countries. The Consortia approach to journal subscription is a deceptive device introduced by journal publishing industry on their own terms. The journal publishing industry is heavily protected by copyright laws and they own the copyright of the articles published. The basic questions are: 1)Does the journal publishing industry sponsor scientific research? 2)Can you think of product in the market where the producer does not get a penny? 3)When much of the research is funded by public (government) funds, how come neither the funding agency nor the individual scientist own the copyright? 4)When journals are heavily priced, can they have wider audience and consequently cited by other research colleagues? Similar questions resulted in many scientific and research communities to championize "Open Access to Information Movement". The objective of the movement is to allow universal / free access to scientific / research publications. Presently, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) lists more than 2300 journals in various disciplines. Dear All, Minutes of NCSI NET talk - meeting held on 8th June 2006, NCSI, IISc: Topic: IP Asset Management Speaker: Mr. Adarsh Nigam. Vice President, Vans Information Limited, Mumbai Total Attendees - 28 (NCSI NET and outsiders) The meeting began with the introduction of the speaker Mr. Adarsh Nigam and he started with his talk. He gave a very good talk on IP and related issues. The presentation was divided into three parts. In the first part the speaker presented on IP, issues, importance etc. Second part was on case studies of GE, Intel, Microsoft and other companies with reference to Patents and IP issues. In the third part the speaker used some tools such as 'Micro Patent's', 'Patweb' and 'Aureka' Databases which is mainly used for Research and Analysis, he also highlighted the importance of Aureka 8.0. The speaker addressed the queries put by audience and showed an analysis of "WIFI Technology". He then demonstrated the search method and the research and analysis of the topic. The speaker explained different membership models and limitations of access to the databases such as Gold, Silver and Bronze membership.
