Google Code Search, a site that simplifies how software developers search for programming code to improve existing software or create new programs. He served Department of LIS, University of Mysore for more than Thirty years and also served for the Mangalore University as University Librarian. For the last few years he worked very hard to prepare course material for LIS of Karnataka State Open University as well organised contact programs and he was widely travelled man. Students in organiising contact programmes at his age actively like young person answering all the queries smoothly. It is really great loss for the Library department of KSOU. He visited our M.S. RAMAIAH INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT on26th September 2006 for MLISc Contact programme to be conducted during October/Novemember2006 at MSRIM,Bangalore. I would like to react to the following lines. We can level them insane - but let me stress again here - Perception is more important than the product. For example look at the perception of a citizen of Lawrence: "Libraries are limited, obsolete" <http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/oct/02/libraries_are_limited_obsolete/> "As a long-time resident of Lawrence, and one who has devoted his entire life to education, I have followed the debate concerning a new library for Lawrence with great interest. As a parent of three students, two in college and one teenager at Southwest Junior High, I have witnessed a stunning transformation in the way kids access and use information technology. All that I see as a parent reinforces what I see at work every day" He continues - 1. Libraries are inefficient. 2. Libraries are limited. 3. Libraries are obsolete. "...ask yourself a few questions. When was the last time you were at the library? When was the last time you logged on? Why is that?..." On the other hand people like Michael Stephens, who is technology and web 2.0 savvy and promoting the concept of Library 2.0 are defending the role that libraries could play in the online scenario. He has Ten points in his argument: -Libraries are not going away. -Online Social Libraries Build Community -Libraries do need to focus on emerging trends, tech or otherwise, to be nimble and viable -Libraries need better marketing strategies and a re-invigoration of the brand -Technology changes, but libraries don't -Libraries will benefit from the next wave of MLIS grads -Libraries need to serve all users and offer them materials and access of their liking -Librarians can be guides, counselors and teachers -Libraries need to share their stories -It's up to us I do agree with him that ultimately "IT'S UP TO US" whether we sense an opportunity in the next generation libraries or keep feeling insecure and get extinct. Sad demise of Prof. N B Pangannaya

I had the fortune of co-ordinating with Prof. N.B. Pangannaya, for the M.Lib. Sc., Distance Education Practical Training Programme for the Bangalore Centre. I met him many times during this programme held from 10th to 25th July, 2006. On 26th September, 2006 the entire day was spent with him in Bangalore at PES Institute of Technology. Never in my dream did I think he will become dear to God so soon. Myself and my colleagues at PESIT are extremely grieved at this demise and pray that his soul rest in peace. Let his untiring energy be passed on to some able selfless person to carry on the Karnataka State Open University Distance Education Programme. Apologies for cross postings **** Call For Participation The 9th International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL 2006) November 27-30, 2006, Kyoto, Japan The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is an annual Asian event of international participation focusing on digital libraries and related technologies. Inaugurated in Hong Kong in 1998, ICADL has since been hosted in Taipei, Seoul, Bangalore, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, and Bangkok. The 9th ICADL (ICADL2006) will be held in Kyoto, Japan in the late November. It will provide an international forum for sharing experiences and up-to-date technologies among researchers, developers, educators, practitioners and policy makers from a variety of disciplines. ICADL2006, as well as the previous ICADL conferences, focuses on the use, adoption and adaptation of digital libraries, which include work surrounding digital libraries and related technologies, the management of knowledge in digital libraries, and the associated usability and social issues. Prof. Pangannaiah was my beloved teacher, very special to me. In my first job as Librarian, I was his proud successor at Udipi, a college library he had build and developed on a very modern line. He made my entry into profession so good and enjoyable that I owe him my success in the first leg of my career profusely to him. He is no more, a very sad feeling indeed. A fine human being, always helpful, he worked for the profession till his last days. I was lucky to have him as my teacher. We miss him. Let us pray for the departed soul. Pangannaya Here is my tribute to my beloved teacher Prof. N. Balakrishna Pangannaya who died due to multiple organ failure on October 1, 2006. He was quite active and had no sign of any illness. He attended to the professional work at his office at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) even on the Friday, September 29, 2006. It is evident that he was contributing richly to the good cause of the profession till his last breath. NBP, as was called fondly by his students, was a teacher par-excellence. Like many of his students, his teachings have a great influence on my professional careers. What I like most in his teachings is his discussions on any topic based on logic and practical utility. He had excellent command over language and the subject. He had the ability to teach any difficult topic with great ease and make even the average students to understand the essence of the topic. His discourse on Information Processing and Retrieval (IPR) still rings in my ears. Prof. Pangannaya is one of the main pillars on which Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore was built. He served the Department for more than three decades. He joined the Department as Lecturer in early 1970s and retired in 2000. For a brief term in-between he served Mangalore University as librarian. I had the fortune of associating myself with him in developing self instructional materials (SIM) for BLISc and MLISc programs of KSOU. He had undergone severe stress during the process of developing the course. In fact, SIM development of MLISc course is half through and he was trying his best to complete the assignment by December this year. It goes to his credit that he alone, single handedly, was able to coordinate the design and development of SIMs both in English and Kannada for BLISc in a record time of just one and half years. It may be noted here this achievement is a record of its kind in KSOU. No other Department was able to develop the SIMs in both the languages. His contributions were recognized and acknowledged by Prof. Sudha Rao, the present Vice Chancellor of KSOU in her key note address during the MLISc contact program held recently. The Department of Library and Information Science has organized a condolence meeting on Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 4 PM. It will be attended by his students and colleagues in and around Mysore. If you want to send your condolences it may be sent to me before 3 PM. I will pass on your message to the concerned for reading them during the meeting. I pray the Almighty to rest Prof. N.B. This project aims at putting ICT to the use of media content development on major societal and development issues such as human rights, peace, tolerance and the fight against discrimination by providing developing countries with training, production and distribution opportunities in these areas. The show consists of feature segments, most often 3 pieces per show, each an estimated six to eight minutes in length. The stories should deal with gripping human problems that have not been widely reported. The programme will feature character-driven, human interest stories that reflect some of the most important issues affecting the world, and our lives, today. Balanced thematically and geographically, each episode will reflect UN priorities for the new millennium. Stories should be targeted to all publics and aim at increasing understanding of the development and societal issues identified as priority fields by UNESCO, namely: * Millennium Development Goals, particularly poverty-alleviation, basic education, gender equality and women empowerment; * Human Rights; * Peace and Tolerance; * Fight against discrimination, based on race, gender or other issues (e.g. HIV status); * Freedom of Expression; and * Intercultural communication and cultural diversity. Dear Professionals, Karnataka State Library Association mourns the untimely and sad demise of Prof. N.B. Pangannayya. He served Department of LIS, University of Mysore for more than three decades with a small stint at Mangalore as University Librarian.
