Read the full call for papers DCDC (Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities) is a cross-sectoral conference, hosted byThe National Archives,RLUK and Jisc, that brings together the GLAMA sector (galleries, libraries, archives, museums and academia) to share our experiences, innovations, interests and concerns. — DCDC22 will showcase how digital innovation is transforming the cultural heritage and academic sectors and their relationship with their audiences. From individual projects, to national programmes, for organisations and groups large and small, we look forward to examining the opportunities and challenges that digital technologies and collaboration can offer. Emerging technologies have brought considerable benefits to cultural heritage organisations, transforming approaches to institutional collections, our ways of working, and the way people discover and engage with collections. As research continues to drive innovation, how can we ensure that our practices remain relevant, open, inclusive, representative and transformative? How can our practices in turn enable new innovations? Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and virtual and augmented reality are strengthening access to collections and renewing audience engagement across the GLAMA sector. At the same time, these technologies also raise questions around representation and ethics. DCDC22 is an opportunity for colleagues to share knowledge and experience within the GLAMA community. We will explore how to build accessible, inclusive systems and promote greater access and engagement between our institutions, communities and groups. Championing creativity and talent within the GLAMA sector and exploring digital solutions at scale, DCDC22 is a forum for knowledge-exchange between organisations and individuals at all levels. We will explore how research is reimagining how our collections are formed and preserved, how audiences engage with and contribute to our work, and how we plan for the future. DCDC22 call for papers DCDC22 invites proposals on this year’s theme of Inclusive Innovation on any project involving archives, libraries, museums and other heritage and cultural organisations and groups in partnership with each other, communities and the academic sector. § Libraries, archives, and museums as catalysts for community cohesion § Leadership, culture and data: overcoming organisational barriers to digital inclusion § The role of peer learning and support in addressing digital inequalities § Navigating the future of technology: future-proofing the sector § Innovating to sustain collections and communities § Collections and AI: digitally ready infrastructure and practices § Supporting equal and inclusive access to knowledge § Engaging wider audiences, perspectives and voices § Digital and data poverty § Algorithmic fairness and transparency, open data and information literacy § Ethical system design, usability and equality of access § Developing digitally ready skill-sets Read the full call for papers Melanie Cheung Executive Assistant Research Libraries UK Tel: +44 (0)20 7862 8647 RLUK Website |Twitter |Youtube |Linkedin Registered Company no: 2733294. A surreal Bookstore in China
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 03 Dec '21

03 Dec '21

2020-10-20 Elizabeth Stamp A Surreal New Bookstore Has Just Opened in China For a book lover, stepping into a bookstore is always exciting, but a new bookstore in China makes the experience absolutely spellbinding. Dujiangyan Zhongshuge, located in Chengdu, was designed by Shanghai-based architecture firm X+Living, which has created several locations for Zhongshuge. The two-story space appears cathedral-like, thanks to the mirrored ceilings and gleaming black tile floors which reflect the bookcases, creating a visual effect that feels akin to an M.C. Escher drawing. “The mirror ceiling in the space is the signature of Zhongshuge bookstore,” says Li Xiang, founder of X+Living. “It effectively extends the space by reflection.” Upon entering, shoppers encounter C-shaped bookcases, which create a series of intimate spaces. In the center of the store, towering arches and columns take advantage of the full height of the space. These bookcases were inspired by the history and topography of the region. “We moved the local landscape into the indoor space,” says Li. “The project is located in Dujiangyan, which is a city with a long history of water conservancy development, so in the main area, you could see the construction of the dam integrated into the bookshelves.” The firm used film printed with books on the upper shelves so it would appear that books stretched from floor to ceiling. “If we placed real books on the upper shelves, it’s not only hard for readers to reach them but also difficult for operators to take care of,” says Li. “The store already has a collection of over 80,000 books, so there’s actually no waste of space.” Another key part of the design was lighting. “We designed light belts on each shelf to create a good light effect, which also draws the outline of each layer, making the shelf more stereoscopic and clear to give readers a visual impact and also make it convenient for readers to find books on the shelves,” says Li. The store’s first floor is home to a café and a playful children’s area, which features bamboo bookcases decorated with pandas. Stacks of colorful cushions provide comfy reading spots for little readers. The second level’s balcony is filled with seating, where customers can browse through their selections, work, or meet. Each space was carefully considered to add to the overall experience. “This project is a holistic concept,” says Li, “We needed to coordinate every part of the space to ensure that any functional item, whether it is a bookshelf or a desk, does not break away from the theme of the concept and at the same time has a sense of beauty.” All the elements of the design come together to give visitors an inspiring shopping experience. “What I find most fascinating about it is that it really presents the local famous man-made landscape, the dam, even though in an abstract, artistic way,” says Li. “But when you stand in the space, and your body feels the big size difference between itself and the foreign object, the impact on your soul is similar to the awe we feel about nature, about the human ingenuity of using nature to build projects for the benefit of our society.” Viewed using Just Read https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/surreal-new-bookstore-opened-china Visit the link to see images! Friends: I just listened to a talk by Prof. Thomas Pradeu, coordinator of the Institute for Philosophy in Biology and Medicine <https://www.philinbiomed.org/>, CNRS, on why science needs philosophy. Here is the link to the talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE03FDdCR-Y He talks about philosophy *in* science as distinct from philosophy *of* science. I want all members of this list who use or are interested in bibliometrics to listen to the talk. Prof. Pradeu has divided his talk (indeed the 2021 Annual Public Lecture at the Indian Academy of Sciences) into three parts, one of them devoted to bibliometrics. Prof. P Balaram, former director of IISc and former editor of *Current Science*, has often lamented that bibliometrics is being used in India, mostly by members of the LIS community, in ways bordering on the ridiculous and in ways the founder of citation indexing in science and the social sciences, Dr Garfield, would not have approved. Prof. Pradeu and colleagues have used bibliometrics (as one of many tools/approaches) brilliantly to show how philosophy can be used to advance science. The LIS community should be indebted to the Academy for having invited Prof. Pradeu to give the public lecture in this year's Annual Meeting and making the talk available as an excellently produced video recording. In 2018, they had invited the indefatigable crusader for making all knowledge open, Carl Malamud. Best wishes.
