my view on current topic of discussion on LIS schools and IT

Dear professionals, After seeing several recent mails on LIS schools and their product capability, I feel, let us not focus on praise or abuse of any specific LIS school. Each school operates on its own strength and weakness. Parent body also contributes to such situations. We can focus our discussion on theme-based rather than any specific school-based. The school based discussions will lead to throwing mud on each other which, finds a tragic end. The current theme is how best LIS schools equip their students in compatible with current trends without loosing basic philosophy of library science. The curriculum need to be on par with current trends and at the same it needs to differentiate from other IT curriculum by its unique courses. The current trends in technology are wikis, open sources, blogs, podcasts, web classifications, digitization, webpage design and hosting, storing devices, methods of providing access to information resources, mobile technology etc... 1. How best LIS schools can deliver these know-how to prospective librarians?, 2. what are basic requirements and expertise required to impart this knowledge? 3. what government and universities should do to provide such environment/opportunity? 4. what is expected from students? What are the basic or minimum skills they should possess? 5. If UGC is insisting on uniform syllabus, how best the authorities could be convinced about incorporating latest techniques in the curriculum?, 6. The rate of obsolescence is very high in IT products and services, how best we can address this threat 7. conferences/seminars/discussions at national and regional level would bring teachers and practitioners together on one platform and participants' wholehearted participation in such discussions might bring meaningful outcomes. Proactive role by LIS associations and schools would bring fruitful results. This benefits both the parties (teachers and students) We can amend or modify the above themes with our experiences. The details of the Memorial Lecture are given below: Title: "Librarians' need for readiness for alternate careers that need Information Specialists" Speaker: MS. Vasumathi Sriganesh, Director, Q Med Services Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai Date: 9th June, 2007 Time: 5.00 PM Venue: Choksi Hall, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (Choksi Hall is located on the right side, just after the main gate of IISc.) Abstract of the Talk : "Librarians are a dying breed". "We don't need libraries - everything is available on the Internet". These are some typical statements that we get to hear, and sometimes more often than we like. Whether these are true or not, the time is ripe for Library and Information Specialists to look at alternate careers too. Alternate careers may be those that supplement the role of a librarian in an organization or may be very different; yet needing the skills of an Information Specialist. Some of the possible options are Content management, Intranets management, Research, Information consulting etc. To break away from tradition and inculcate change, we need Knowledge, Skills and Desire. The last is possibly the most difficult element to handle. This talk will focus on why librarians need to be prepared for change, and also touch upon how to develop Knowledge, Skills and Desire to change. The challenges go beyond those needed from Information Professionals. For such professionals to make their mark in the job market, there is a lot of awareness promotion, marketing and relationship building that will be needed. About the Speaker : Vasumathi Sriganesh got her B.Sc degree in Home-Science in 1977. Married immediately, she was a homemaker for 12 years after which she did her BLIS from the Bombay University in 1989-90. Later she did her MLIS through IGNOU in the years 1997-99. She has worked in three libraries - Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, The Hinduja Hospital and HELP (Health Education Library for People), all in Mumbai. In both medical libraries she was instrumental in the entire computerization, as well as starting off literature search services and Internet based activities. Medicine was always her passion and she found deep satisfaction in Medical Librarianship. My views on Five Laws of Library Science

Dear friends, An ideology of librarianship was created by S.R.Ranganathan in his classic The Five Laws of Library Science. He formulated objectives and principles for the organization of access to and use library materials. As Ranganathan asserted, " it should be the business of the librarian to adopt all the recognized methods of attracting the public to the library, so that every potential reader may be converted in to actual one, there by increasing the fulfillment of the Third Law." The third law concerns context rather than law content. The mission of the librarian is to build a well -organised collection of resources in order to maximize the chance that users will find what they need. The third law is also tells "Every book ,its reader" almost means that "resources look for people." Who want and need them the most. Library patrons, Ranganathan points out, often do not know enough about available resources to know what to request. Any organization of the electronic or physical library that focuses only on getting the readers what they ask for neglects two key components of good library practice: browsing and linking. By emphasizing lot on IT, we are slowly moving from the bottom-line of the library and information science. We are in a verge to forgotten our great S R Ranganthan, but noteworthy thing is IT people have embraced Ranganthan for organizing information on the web. His idea of faceted classification is the buzzword among interface designers and new subject �Information Architecture� is evolving strongly based on faceted analysis. Instead of concentrating lot on IT, if we shift our focus bit on towards training library graduates towards classification, thesauri, controlled vocabularies, metadata and search systems and how it has been used in technological environment, this will help us to understand both library and information science and information technology. The field of librarianship has been largely devoted to the task of organizing and providing access to information. So why all the fuss now? Efforts of MyDLIS, University of Mysore

Respected LIS Professionals, As an alumnus of MyDLIS, University of Mysore, Mysore, I thought of sharing my own case in this regard. Having passed out in 2005, I am currently working in a Pharmaceutical Company in Bangalore as a Knowledge Management - Executive and I am shortly migrating to Deloitte Consulting Hyderabad as a Record Management (Analyst) US Operations. Before that I was at i2 Technologies. I am proud to be a student of MyDLIS and state that training and the amount of knowledge I gathered during my MLISc (2003 - 2005), has helped me in finding job opportunities in bigger IT industries like Deloitte and i2 Technologies. During my course I have learnt many aspects of Library and Information Science as far as theory is concerned and practical aspects of DDC, UDC as well as the IT related stuffs like Greenstone, Dspace, LIBSYS, Dublin Core, MARC 21 etc from my beloved faculty members. I would also like to add, more than the knowledge and IT skills per se, it is more important to inculcate the right mindset and attitude. As regards market expectations- from my experience, I would like to add that the market is somewhat nebulous and evolving and therefore LIS professionals need to have a broad range of skills, learning attitude and adaptability. Incentive for the reviewer was that he can have a copy of the book he chooses to review at the cost of the library. (Vyasamoorthy) ===================== How to start book clubs Want to meet some interesting characters? Open a book. Want to meet some real-life interesting characters, too? Start a book group! Book groups (a.k.a. "book clubs") are a great way to commune with friends and meet new people while exploring (hopefully) good books. What's more, membership in a book group can help you stay motivated to read if you otherwise have difficulty finding time to pick up a book. If you can't find a group in your area, maybe it's time to start one. Here's how. Steps 1. Decide on your requirements. You should definitely allow the group to make most decisions, but if you have certain requirements for the club (for example, if you just like to read science fiction or if you can only meet on Thursdays), you should set them out ahead of time. 2. Find a location for the initial meeting. If you feel comfortable inviting people into your home, you can have at least the first meeting at your house or apartment as long as you have enough room. Otherwise, you can usually reserve space for free at community centers, libraries or churches, or you might try to get a bookstore to let you hold your meeting there. If you can find someplace convenient where you can hold regular meetings, so much the better. 3. Make and distribute a flyer. This announces the time and place of the first meeting and any other relevant information, such as whether refreshments will be served. Ask that people bring suggestions of books to read. Deliver copies of the flyer to local bookstores, and put them up on community bulletin boards at grocery stores, churches, etc. You can also advertise online on the community pages of sites such as Craigslist. Be sure to clarify that the purpose of the group is to discuss books, not to order books together at a reduced price. 4. Prepare a clipboard. For the initial meeting, this should include at least two items: a "Book Suggestions" page, where members can write down titles they recommend for the group, and a "Hosting and Refreshments" page where members can sign up for a date that is convenient for them to take these responsibilities. You want the attendees names. A head count is not sufficient. For subsequent meetings, you'll also want to include a "Coming Soon" page, the reading schedule for the next two or three meetings. This clipboard should make the rounds at every meeting. 5. Prepare the meeting space. Make sure the meeting space is clean and inviting. Most importantly, make sure you have enough chairs, and set up refreshments. 6. Greet the potential members at the first meeting. Introduce yourself and try to make sure that each feels welcome and comfortable. Let them know you're glad to see them. 7. Start the first meeting by stating the agenda and making introductions. If some of your guests don't know each other, go around and have everybody introduce themselves. You may also want to do this at subsequent meetings if new members are in attendance. Ask that people tell the group a little bit about themselves and their reading interests. During the introductions, send the clipboard around so people can write down book suggestions and sign up to bring refreshments or, if necessary, to host. 8. Explain or decide how often, for how long, and where the group will meet and how much reading the group should generally get through from meeting to meeting. Some issues to discuss are: * Do you want to set rules about the books, such as pricing or content? * What are the members' expectations of the group, and what are their responsibilities as members? * What is the group's policy on smoking, pets, tardiness, and telephone calls during book discussions? * Can members bring a guest? * Can new people join, or is there a limit to the group size? 9. Decide on the first book to read. The easiest way to do this is to simply pick a book yourself -- try to pick one, such as a current bestseller, with wide appeal -- but if you don't want to go out on a limb, you can decide as a group. An easy way to do this is to choose the book that received the most suggestions on the clipboard. You can also put several suggestions to a vote. At future meetings, you'll be able to streamline this process (see Tips). 10. Break out the refreshments and chat. Now that the really hard work is done, relax and let people talk and leave as they will. Be sure to speak to each person again so they feel more comfortable and invested in the group. Tips * Don't be overly selective about whom you invite. Diversity makes things interesting, so cast a wide net. * Get some nametags. Especially at the first meeting, it's a good idea to have nametags so that people can start to learn each other's names. * Since you are starting the book club, you are entirely responsible for the initial meeting. You should thus take that turn to provide refreshments. You don't have to, of course, but if you do you'll probably get a better turnout. * Deciding as a group which book to read next takes forever. Either take turns choosing, or put one person in charge of scheduling the books. This person should try to ensure that everyone who wants to suggest a book gets their chance. Some people may not want to. * Have an annual party at which each member nominates 2-3 books and vote on them. The 12 books chosen (if you meet monthly) are then scheduled for the entire year. * If you want to make choosing books really easy, just agree to use the selections of an established book club, such as Doubleday's or Oprah's. Search the internet, and you'll probably find a book club whose selections interest you, no matter what genre(s) you prefer. * At future meetings, let the person who suggested the book start the discussion. Then go around the circle in order at least once. This way everyone is encouraged and enabled to talk about what they've read, and the group can comment on their points. * Be prepared to politely maneuver on to the next person if one member goes on too long. * Many book stores offer discounts to book groups. Ask around before you buy. * Don't panic if things are a little stiff in the beginning. People (including you) will grow more comfortable over time. * If you're taking turns hosting or providing refreshments, be sure to remind people at the meeting before their turn. * To make things easier, one person can be in charge of getting the books. If this is the case, that person should have the book for the next meeting ready for pickup/payment at the current meeting. The "Coming Soon" page can double as an order page where people sign up to receive books for future meetings. This is important because not everybody will be able to attend every meeting. Warnings * Try to avoid micro-managing the group. After the first meeting, do your best to help things run smoothly, but let the group run itself as much as possible. Don't make yourself responsible for everything, especially hosting or providing refreshments. You'll burn out pretty quickly.
