Mobile: 9393477313 email: apla1914(a)gmail.com *Sri Paturi Nagabhushanam - The Visionary of Library Services * Sri Paturi Nagabhushanam born at Pedapalem in Guntur District of AP is one whose name evokes a sense of reverence and gratitude in the minds and hearts of the Librarian fraternity in India. Mother Teresa once said "There are no great acts, only small acts done with love". This adage suits Sri Nagabhushanam to the hilt as the seeds of wisdom and knowledge he had sown in the villages of Rural AP truly testify. His pioneering efforts in spreading the cause of book reading earned him the honorary title "The Doyen of the Andhra Library Movement. He was a freedom fighter, a Gandhian in life style. He set up Libraries in about 160 villages of Guntur district. He also organised Boat Libraries between Pedavadlapudi and Kolluru & Pedavadlapudi and Pidaparru, 1935-42. This became a national sensation. He was the secretary of APLA for more than four decades. With the serenity of a seer, he led the Library Movement forward for more than five decades. His sense of cpmprehensive vision, sacrifice and compassion and commitment to the cause of Library Movement in India is worth emulating. *APLA Track Record* The Andhra Pradesh Library Association played a meaningful role with a long history of proactive and progressive involvement and dedicated efforts in the cause of Library Movement in AP aswell in India. The APLA enjoys an excellent track record strengthened by the rich and fruitful association of the doyens of Library Movement in A.P., Sri Chilakamarthi, Sri Suravaram Pratap Reddy, Sri Iyyanki, Sri Gadicherla, Sri Kodati, Sri Paturi, Prof NG Ranga, Dr M. Chenna Reddy among others. with a contribution spanning nine decades, the APLA has an influential and remarkable identity in the field of Library & information science in the country. *Vijayawada : The Destination City* Vijayawada is the political educational and commercial centre of the State of Andhra Pradesh. Yahoo Groups Servers behave erratically

Dear Friends I am having serious doubts about the quality of service from Yahoo Groups Servers. Too many complaints are coming nowadays. Members who have been invited are unable to sign up. Members who have been approved do not start getting messages. Members who have unsubscribed continue to get messages. The subscriber count on the home page of the group website does not get updated properly. Many straightforward messages are treated as SPAM. Many members experience their messages bouncing. Many messages do not get circulated. Yahoo.co.in mailing system is most faulty I have observed. This is the problem of FREE services -- No guarantee of performance. I have been trying my best to sort out issues but not progress could be made. I have consulted / searched the Yahoo Webmasters Forum & the Yahoo team as well. Please do bring to my notice if you suspect problems of getting or sending messages. PLEASE ALSO TELL ME if you know any workarounds. Abstract of the Talk : "Librarians are a dying breed". "We don't need libraries - everything is available on the Internet". These are some typical statements that we get to hear, and sometimes more often than we like. Whether these are true or not, the time is ripe for Library and Information Specialists to look at alternate careers too. Alternate careers may be those that supplement the role of a librarian in an organization or may be very different; yet needing the skills of an Information Specialist. Some of the possible options are Content management, Intranets management, Research, Information consulting etc. To break away from tradition and inculcate change, we need Knowledge, Skills and Desire. The last is possibly the most difficult element to handle. This talk will focus on why librarians need to be prepared for change, and also touch upon how to develop Knowledge, Skills and Desire to change. The challenges go beyond those needed from Information Professionals. For such professionals to make their mark in the job market, there is a lot of awareness promotion, marketing and relationship building that will be needed. About the Speaker : Vasumathi Sriganesh got her B.Sc degree in Home-Science in 1977. Married immediately, she was a homemaker for 12 years after which she did her BLIS from the Bombay University in 1989-90. Later she did her MLIS through IGNOU in the years 1997-99. She has worked in three libraries - Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, The Hinduja Hospital and HELP (Health Education Library for People), all in Mumbai. In both medical libraries she was instrumental in the entire computerization, as well as starting off literature search services and Internet based activities. Medicine was always her passion and she found deep satisfaction in Medical Librarianship. Dear Professionals: As part of ongoing project, Development of OAI-based Institutional Repository Services in India, sponsored by Department of Scientific and Industrial research, Ministry of Science and technology, Govt. of India, the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will be conducting a training workshop on "Building Institutional Repositories using GNU EPrints", during 25-27 July 2007. The main focus of the workshop will be to provide an intensive practical training to the participants to setup and maintain their Institutional Repositories (IR) using the latest version of "GNU EPrints.org" software. The workshop is being conducted to encourage research institutes, universities and R&D organizations to setup their interoperable IRs. The institutions/organizations are encouraged to depute appropriate persons who will be in a position to take advantage of the training to set up and operate institutional repositories in their respective institutions. Participation from Institutions/Organizations with a large S&T/R&D activity, larger research output, regular publications and interaction meets would be desirable. Workshop Fees: No registration fee will be charged from the participant. A maximum of 20 participants will be taken for the workshop. A few months ago, TreeHugger Mark Ontkush wrote a post on his blog EcoIron titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year. The post lays out the following train of thought. "An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts." Google, which has a white background and gets about "200 million queries a day" could reduce global energy use by 750 Megawatt-hours a year by simply changing the color of its homepage to black. In response to this post a black version of Google emerged called Blackle.com According to Blackle's homepage at publication time, 4,408.917 Watt hours have been saved by . Nice ideas.
