Mumbai: Senior citizens set up free library on Mulund footpath to promote reading
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 26 Dec '21

26 Dec '21

I found this news item interesting for many reasons: It is initiated by senior citizens. It is open 24X7 with nobody 'manning' it. It is run on a 'on trust' basis. Many have already benefited from it. ========== December 25, 2021 8:09:07 pm Unknown author https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/mumbai-footpath-library-mul… Mumbai: Senior citizens set up free library on Mulund footpath to promote reading Written by Jayprakash S Naidu | Mumbai | The open library is not guarded by anyone and is open 24 hours a day. A few social workers have set up a 24×7 library on a footpath in Mulund (east) where people can come and pick up books for free. The library at Khandoba Mandir chowk has a collection of more than 2,000 books on a wide variety of subjects, donated mainly by senior citizens across Mumbai. Anyone can pick up a book of their choice and take it away for free after writing down their name and contact number on a register, and return it later. Senior citizens like Sadanand Desai, a mechanical engineer, Jaywant Hargude, retired assistant police commissioner, Deepak Khedkar, a journalist, and Jayshree Bise, a businesswoman, are some of the people who have donated books to the library. https://images.indianexpress.com/2020/08/1x1.png Desai, 73, told the Indian Express: “My late wife and I loved reading and collecting books. We had a collection of more than 500 books. After she passed away, I thought I should donate the books so people could get to read them for free. It includes a biography of politician Sharad Pawar.” “It’s a good initiative and the best thing is that the footpath where the library is located has minimal vehicular traffic and has some greenery around it,” added Desai. Ramesh Meshram, a senior citizen who came up with the idea, said: “These days, when everyone at home is hooked to their phones, I wanted old people to have a space where they can sit and read or take a book back home as a good time pass. There is Kelkar college nearby and the students passing by pick up books on their way home.” Shubham Gavand, an ITI student, said: “I picked up a book related to public speech as I wanted to increase my confidence while addressing an audience during presentations.” Heena Savla, a resident, said: “ I picked up a motivational book. It’s a good initiative and I hope it will help to get people to read books.” The open library is not guarded by anyone and is open 24 hours a day. “Few people said that the books might get stolen, but we are not worried about that. It is our endeavour to get people to read books,” added Meshram. =============== Dr P Vyasamoorthy / 9490804278 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

My kind of heaven

My kind of heaven Teacher Plus - Special issue on libraries: https://www.teacherplus.org/my-kind-of-heaven/ I risk repeating just about everything you are about to read in this issue when I say that if there is a space where one can not only be oneself but find the self that one would like to become, it is inside a book. Correct that: there’s one other place/space – and that is the library, in the company of those who love and know books. For those of us fortunate enough to have grown up with access to such spaces, there are many fond memories we carry, of many formative moments and interactions, both with books and the people who have made that access possible. It becomes, then, for many, a restless passion that drives them to (for want of a better word) evangelize, to introduce others to the pleasures of reading, and also to the joys of building communities of readers. As Sujata Noronha, our guest editor for this issue of *Teacher Plus* puts it, “Library as both a concept and construct is so full of possibilities,” possibilities that go much beyond a collection of books or a place of knowledge curation and reference. Building a library and sustaining it requires not only an expansive imagination, but using it productively (and that can be a troublesome word) also needs us to go much beyond the instrumental framing that limits the popular understanding of such a place. The ongoing section in *Teacher Plus, Off the Library Shelves,* has attempted to offer a continuing exploration of what a library is and what it can be, drawing from varied experiences and contexts. This issue is a natural extension of this journey, bringing together in a very concentrated package some of the rich experiences of librarians, library enthusiasts, book lovers and educators. It takes us into a little bit of history, and gives us plenty of hope for what learning and the pleasure of knowledge seeking and even escape, can look like when books and other resources are organized into what becomes a library by many names. We discovered very quickly that so much can – and needed to – be said about libraries, and the slim space of a magazine doesn’t quite do it all justice. But think of this as a beginning (or maybe a middle) of a conversation that doesn’t really have to end when you turn the last page. That’s what happens with a good book, isn’t it? *Guest Editorial* Welcome to the Library *Sujata Noronha* Imagine you are in a quiz on great Indian thinkers and you find a question being asked about the Father of Library Science in India. If you do not know this answer, rest back, there will be a librarian in the audience – if not on a team – who will quickly call out Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan or S.R. Ranganathan as he is more commonly referred to. Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892-1972) was a mathematician, a university teacher who lived in south India and was known for his ‘active’ teaching methods. He was beloved in the classroom and dynamic in the ways in which he brought his students to ideas and topics. He was selected to become the librarian at Madras University in 1924. But having no experience and training in librarianship and dreading the lonely life of the librarian, S. R. Ranganathan (S.R.R) asked for a reprieve. He was invited to study librarianship in a University/Public Library in the United Kingdom and to decide thereafter if he wanted to continue as a librarian or not. The nine-month observation study appeared to have transformed S.R. Ranganathan’s mind towards this field of library study and practice, and thereafter changed his ideas about the science of library. In India and many other countries, library science gets its philosophical foundation and social recognition from the immense contributions of S.R. Ranganathan. He is widely known for the Five Laws of Library Science and for his classification and indexing theory. However, for those of us who work with young people, S.R. Ranganathan’s contribution to the imagination and nature of school libraries is a treatise that can inform best practices in the simplest of ways. He was a strong advocate of the public library movement and enabling book access to all. In an essay written in 1941, based on a speech commemorating the silver jubilee of the installation of the Public Library in Bangalore, 80 years ago, S.R. Ranganathan made an argument for public enthusiasm to form a library movement within the public library stream. He felt very strongly that this movement would impact government policy and funding, professionalism for the field of library science, practice of librarianship and dissemination and access to libraries in the country. Eighty years have passed and in early 2021, when the editors of *Teacher Plus* decided to devote a special issue to the library, it felt like the winds of that very enthusiasm beginning to stir again. But this time for library work with children and young people. When I first accepted this wondrous opportunity, all I could think about was that this is a chance to document more deeply and share more widely the range of library practices that make up our world in India in 2021. As I began to think of how to include and structure the issue, I realized that the breadth and width of library work is fuelled by so many micro and macro aspects that it is foolhardy to think of it from the point of view of practice or existence of library spaces alone. Library both as a construct and a concept is so full of possibilities that it was suddenly within my scope to imagine a more expanded issue because of the work that has gone before and the people who have enabled the domain to form. Without imagination, a market, a professional community, policy, school systems, the curiosity and open mindedness of children, the human pursuit for learning and pleasure, our compelling need for social justice, library work would be hollow. This formed the basis of imagining this issue. It is with immense pleasure that I present to you a collection of essays that cover the gamut of library work from points of view that intersect with the library and are of the library as well. I trust, based on my learning of bringing this issue together that you will find fresh insights and learning and that ideas of practice and possibilities will open up for us as librarians and teachers. I have had the honour of partnering with many colleagues who devoted themselves to writing out essays or editing essays that make the picture whole. I am indebted to each and every one of them and hope that this special issue marks the continuation of the library movement envisaged by S.R. Ranganathan for our future – through our children. The issue is divided into three sections that open up life lines into the library. From the physical library as place to the cerebral library in our imagination and thinking, matters of collection, inclusion, literacy, technology, policy, school and community find place and purpose in this issue. Each section is highlighted with art work to set the tone of the section and provoke us to imagine further and interact with the ideas that we present. This Librarian Spent 41 Years Walking 12 Km Daily To Deliver Books

Amazing professionals are amongst us!! This Librarian Spent 41 Years Walking 12 Km Daily To Deliver Books ============================================= For the last 41 years, one man in Karuvatta in Kerala’s Alappuzha has been walking 12 kilometres, from house to house, every day. His only companions are two bags full of 60-70 books, and lunch packed from home. P Sukumaran is a ‘walking librarian’, who visits about 35 houses in the Karuvatta and Kumarapuram grama panchayats to deliver books to women and children. He works for the Kumarapuram Public Library, where he first began a job as a librarian in his early twenties, in 1979. “I love books, and I find happiness in walking and reaching out to readers, delivering books and periodicals,” the 61-year-old tells The Better India. “I get a lot of perks during my daily walks. For example, I get to enjoy nature and greenery on my way. Also, I am a person who loves to talk a lot about the things I have read, and going to different houses gives me a chance to interact with and share this knowledge with others, including children,” says Sukumaran, who has a Bachelors in Economics from SD College, Alappuzha. This public library, which was established in 1950 and runs in a small two-room building, was once known to be among the finest in the area, but had been in a state of decline for a while, owing to a dwindling number of visitors. That’s when Sukumaran decided to introduce the initiative of walking and reaching out to readers by distributing books. “The library needed people, and the people needed some fine books. So, I thought, why not have the library reach the people? That’s how I began this journey 41 years ago,” he explains. From Monday to Saturday, Sukumaran walks around 12 km daily. He starts his day by going to the library at 8.30 am, and around 10.30, he leaves to start delivering books. He carries his lunch with him and later returns to the library by 4 pm. He says he doesn’t know how to ride a bicycle, and prefers walking over any other mode of transport. “When I was studying in college, I used to work as a newspaper boy and walked long distances everyday to make deliveries every morning. I’ve been used to walking since then, and I never get tired,” he says. Sukumaran says his mission is to inculcate the value of books and the habit of reading. “I am an avid reader and I started reading from a very young age. I used to read around 11 newspapers everyday. I believe that reading makes you wise, it helps you understand the world better and makes you a better human being. So, I am on a mission to do my part as a conscious human being.” Sukumaran’s efforts to reach out to his readers has helped the library thrive through many difficult times, and the number of memberships in the library has increased ever since, he says. Most of Sukumaran’s readers are children and women. He goes to every house to not just deliver books, but also interact with them. He reads all the books that he lends out, and says he tries to give the reader a text that will suit their taste. He says, “I don’t go to these houses just to deliver books. I spend some quality time interacting with readers and discussing the books. I ask them questions or seek their opinions, especially to children, to make sure that they have read the book properly and understood it.” P Sukumaran, the walking librarian from Alappuzha, Kerala, who travels 12 km daily to deliver books for the past 41 years. Life has never been easy for Sukumaran, who has been living in a rented house for the past 15 years with his wife and 12-year-old son, who has been diagnosed with autism. As a librarian, he lives on a meagre monthly allowance of Rs 3,100 from the Kerala State Library Council and a 30 per cent commission he gets from the book sales. “I’ve always wanted to build a house of my own. But my son needs proper treatment and medication, so most of my earnings are spent taking care of him. But I am happy with whatever I have right now.” He adds, “I am very passionate about my work. My daily walks and interactions with the readers make me forget about all my personal struggles. It energises me, and I find happiness in it.” Meanwhile, P Gopalan, secretary of Kumarapuram Public Library and Sukumaran’s elder brother, takes care of the library when the latter goes out every day to deliver books. He says that the building used to house around 20,000 texts at one point, but has since lost about 25 per cent of them. “We lost a lot of books during the 2019 floods in Kerala. A big tree fell over the library building, breaking the roof and destroying around 6,000 books. Now we are in the process of getting new ones, which had been delayed due to the pandemic,” P Gopalan says. “We run our library in a small two-room building, which is not big enough for it to function. We even have a few rare books, and people still come in search of them for reference. But it saddens me that our library doesn’t have enough space or facilities to accommodate them,” Sukumaran adds disappointedly. When asked about his brother’s work, Gopalan says, “He is a very passionate and energetic person. He’s an avid reader and someone who always sticks to his ideologies.” As we conclude our conversation, Sukumaran notes, “The habit of reading could do wonders to people. So, it is essential to read more, get inspired, and build a society that thrives on humility.” Honouring his work and dedication, in 2016, Sukumaran was awarded the I V Das memorial award by the Kerala State Library Council Staff Association. If you want to contact or offer financial assistance, you can call P Sukumaran at 9747451348. ======= https://www.thebetterindia.com/269075/p-sukumaran-walking-librarian-kerala-… Dr P Vyasamoorthy / 9490804278 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
