Dear Professionals, While striving hard for the better positions and looking for better earnings, are we in the verge of change in our profession? Is any one of you ever realized or come across such situations in your career? May be many more people are experiencing as the same as we do today, we feel that we have left out of that traditional Library activities such as of meeting users demands, procuring reading materials, classifying books, so forth routine jobs. But thinking that we may be shifted to the other side or the next step of the Librarianship ie., doing technical documentation. It includes building Online fulltext Database, extracting metadata, developing local standards for selecting, procuring, collecting, storing and retrieving the technical documents, seting Goals or Targets, facing the pressure coocker situations. To add the spice to all these activities is to utilization of Librarianship skills. At the same time we feel that, we may not be doing all that of Librarianship activities as such. This kind of a change I have noticed in many other professions also!!! We appreciate your comments and remarks in this regard. Another important aspect of occupational hazard facing the librarians of the present genertaion (our world becoming a global village) is on account of the increasing interaction with foreign users. Some of their demands may be proper & right but some of these are outright nonsensese. They will like to be admitted in the reading halls with their laptops, provided all uptodate electronic facilities, particularly free access to internet (for other than study related purposes too); textbooks in their hostels, they tend to stick together in groups, boys and girls coming in odd dress, showing (as far as traditional Indian custom is concerned ) abnormal behavior; they often either don't understand or misundertand our communication. The African students tend to show bullying behaviour. They even think as if the Indian staff have prejudice against them. Some from European countries have a kind of superiority complex. The changing nature of the customers that modern librarians have to deal with therefore require an urgent inclusion of a module on ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR in our paper of library administration. Furthermore, some workshops may be conducted on interpersonal relationship. It is high time that librararians like any other marketing professional have to be empowered with best trainings in tools and minds. Most of the libraries in third world countries similarly in india are highly prone to dust exposure, the persons working in this area(Library stacks) are highly exposure to diferent hazardous diseases. There may be various reasons of lack of manpower, money, time, physical factor, that should addressed at great length and width. So that, a awarness would arise among the library community. Academic institutions and their libraries are not immune to this mandate. Users are now looking for quality in everywhere, whether it is a manufactured product or a customized service. Ideal way to look at quality is by providing hundred percent satisfaction to the information seeker. In proposing the legislation, Stuart M. Shieber, a professor at FAS, said, There is no question that scholarly journals have historically allowed scholars to distribute their research to audiences around the world. But, the scholarly publishing system has become far more restrictive than it need be. Many publishers will not even allow scholars to use and distribute their own work. And, the cost of journals has risen to such astronomical levels that many institutions and individuals have cancelled subscriptions, further reducing the circulation of scholars works. This is a large and very important step for scholars throughout the country. It should be a very powerful message to the academic community that we want and should have more control over how our work is used and disseminated, added Shieber, James O. Welch Jr. and Virginia B. At Harvard, where so much of our research is of global significance, we have an essential responsibility to distribute the fruits of our scholarship as widely as possible, said Provost Steven E. Hyman. Today's action in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences will promote free and open access to significant, ongoing research. It is a first step in the creation of an open-access environment for current research that may one day provide the widest possible dissemination of Harvard's distinguished Faculties' work. Harvard will take advantage of the license by hosting FAS faculty members scholarly articles in an open-access repository, making them available worldwide for free. The faculty member will retain the copyright of the article, subject to the Universitys license. The repository contents can be made widely available to the public through such search engines such as Google Scholar. Faculty members may request a waiver of the license for particular articles where this is preferable. The new legislation does not apply to articles completed before its adoption. The repository, which will be supported and maintained by Harvard University, will allow scholars and the general public from around the world access to scholarly works of FAS faculty. This access will benefit scholars at all research institutions, which have seen their ability to maintain subscriptions to a full range of scholarly journals seriously compromised over the past few years. Research centers in poorer countries have been especially harmed by the access limitations caused by the high cost of many journals, Shieber pointed out. Todays vote in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, said Robert Darnton, Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and director of the University Library, addresses an issue that is of great concern to all of the Faculties of the University. All of us face the same problems and all of us can envision the public benefits of open access. Harvard Medical School, for example, is already working with its faculty to comply with a congressional mandate that articles based on funding from the National Institutes of Health be openly accessible through PubMed Central.
