Job Description: The incumbent will work for implementing defined Institute archival policies, collecting, selecting, cataloging, and managing access to, preserving materials and records of importance both in physical and digital form pertaining to Institute’s activities, events, and history. Will be responsible for creating an awareness about the archive and disseminate selected content through exhibitions, events, and other modes. The candidates will assist in preparing long term and short-term plans, policies, implementing and reviewing the same from time to time. They will be responsible for ensuring implementation of safe archival and record-keeping practices, undertaking digitization of selected records, and implementing the highest level of security and preservation of all types of collections added to the archive including photos, videos, audio, etc. It will also be important for the candidate to maintain the archive and manage digital content on web platforms for creating visibility and ease of access. He/She will be a part of a small but dedicated team of Institute library staff and will be required to work on other jobs assigned by the Librarian from time to time. The candidate should be highly motivated, result-oriented, and keen to learn new information and technology skills required for creating and managing a state-of-the-art Institute archive 8. A surreal Bookstore in China

2020-10-20 Elizabeth Stamp A Surreal New Bookstore Has Just Opened in China For a book lover, stepping into a bookstore is always exciting, but a new bookstore in China makes the experience absolutely spellbinding. Dujiangyan Zhongshuge, located in Chengdu, was designed by Shanghai-based architecture firm X+Living, which has created several locations for Zhongshuge. The two-story space appears cathedral-like, thanks to the mirrored ceilings and gleaming black tile floors which reflect the bookcases, creating a visual effect that feels akin to an M.C. Escher drawing. “The mirror ceiling in the space is the signature of Zhongshuge bookstore,” says Li Xiang, founder of X+Living. “It effectively extends the space by reflection.” Upon entering, shoppers encounter C-shaped bookcases, which create a series of intimate spaces. In the center of the store, towering arches and columns take advantage of the full height of the space. These bookcases were inspired by the history and topography of the region. “We moved the local landscape into the indoor space,” says Li. “The project is located in Dujiangyan, which is a city with a long history of water conservancy development, so in the main area, you could see the construction of the dam integrated into the bookshelves.” The firm used film printed with books on the upper shelves so it would appear that books stretched from floor to ceiling. “If we placed real books on the upper shelves, it’s not only hard for readers to reach them but also difficult for operators to take care of,” says Li. “The store already has a collection of over 80,000 books, so there’s actually no waste of space.” Another key part of the design was lighting. “We designed light belts on each shelf to create a good light effect, which also draws the outline of each layer, making the shelf more stereoscopic and clear to give readers a visual impact and also make it convenient for readers to find books on the shelves,” says Li. The store’s first floor is home to a café and a playful children’s area, which features bamboo bookcases decorated with pandas. Stacks of colorful cushions provide comfy reading spots for little readers. The second level’s balcony is filled with seating, where customers can browse through their selections, work, or meet. Each space was carefully considered to add to the overall experience. “This project is a holistic concept,” says Li, “We needed to coordinate every part of the space to ensure that any functional item, whether it is a bookshelf or a desk, does not break away from the theme of the concept and at the same time has a sense of beauty.” All the elements of the design come together to give visitors an inspiring shopping experience. “What I find most fascinating about it is that it really presents the local famous man-made landscape, the dam, even though in an abstract, artistic way,” says Li. “But when you stand in the space, and your body feels the big size difference between itself and the foreign object, the impact on your soul is similar to the awe we feel about nature, about the human ingenuity of using nature to build projects for the benefit of our society.” Viewed using Just Read https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/surreal-new-bookstore-opened-china Visit the link to see images! Friends: I just listened to a talk by Prof. Thomas Pradeu, coordinator of the Institute for Philosophy in Biology and Medicine <https://www.philinbiomed.org/>, CNRS, on why science needs philosophy. I want all members of this list who use or are interested in bibliometrics to listen to the talk. Prof. Pradeu has divided his talk (indeed the 2021 Annual Public Lecture at the Indian Academy of Sciences) into three parts, one of them devoted to bibliometrics. Prof. P Balaram, former director of IISc and former editor of *Current Science*, has often lamented that bibliometrics is being used in India, mostly by members of the LIS community, in ways bordering on the ridiculous and in ways the founder of citation indexing in science and the social sciences, Dr Garfield, would not have approved. Prof. Pradeu and colleagues have used bibliometrics (as one of many tools/approaches) brilliantly to show how philosophy can be used to advance science. The LIS community should be indebted to the Academy for having invited Prof. Pradeu to give the public lecture in this year's Annual Meeting and making the talk available as an excellently produced video recording. The UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 41st session, in November 2021. "UNESCO Recommendations are legal instruments in which “the General Conference formulates principles and norms for the international regulation of any particular question and invites the Member States to take whatever legislative or other steps may be required in conformity with the constitutional practice of each State and the nature of the question under consideration to apply the principles and norms aforesaid within their respective territories”. Emanating from the Organization's supreme governing body and hence possessing great authority, recommendations are intended to influence the development of national laws and practices."
