Dear All, I agree to some points pointed out by our friends Mr. Sukhdev Singh, Mr.Mulla, Dr. Manjunath, Dr. Thimmappa, Dr. Konnur and others. But, I differ in one point. i.e. starting new associations or organisations to fight for LIS cause. We have too many associations, societies at both national and state levels like ILA, IASLIC, IALA, SALIS, SIS, TN LA, Kerala LA, Karnataka LA, MAdras LA, etc., etc., etc., This leads to a position, we cannot present our case in a united single strong voice to be heard by Govt. /university/ authorities. Instead of starting new assns., we can give more representation to young professionals (age below 40) in electing/selecting office bearers. We quote America for everything, then why not we should follow ALA for a good cause. About members: How an association will become strong, if there is no active participation of members in the association activities. When I invited my friend to attend an association Meet/Talk, he said "Oh! You organised it in a working day, how can I come after attending office", When I invited him for a Meet/Talk organised on a holiday, he said " Oh! that is a holiday, how can I come all the way from my residence to the venue". People always give some excuses. If this is the attitude of members towards associations, how our friends blame the office-bearers. Dear Friends, I fully endorse the view points expressed in emails on the issue of better activism for Library Associations. I propose a coordination forum or joint committee of all national / state associations. Such a forum should have online presence and should engage in online discussions. Let me update you all on my own fight to get membership of Medical Library Association of India. Not that I am dying for its membership. But I am fighting because matter is of principles and my rights. I am professionally qualified with master degree and a Life Member of ILA. I applied for membership for "Medical Library Association of India" (MLAI) on the suggestion of one of my colleague. To my great surprise my Cheque came back in an envelop without any covering letter. Don't jump to conclusion that there might be some administrative mistake (as latter on it became clear that there was a method in their madness). I wrote number of emails to the office bearers of MLAI, but could not get a single reply. My colleagues (including one EC member of MLAI and their "Best Medical Librarian of the Year" awardee) also wrote to them to seek a reply as what is happening. At last the president of the association wrote back that she will investigate the matter and respond back shortly. That "SHORTLY" is now THREE YEARS OLD. I am still waiting for an official reply from MLAI about my membership. I just want to know why my membership was not accepted. I know the plight of that rubber stamp president while power flow from Delhi. Now tell me, Can such an association have guts to write a memorandum to any authority? They don't even have the guts to update on membership status of an individual. Should not I believe that other associations are also like that? Some of you might be wondering on my stupidity of belittling myself while narrating this incidence. But that is what I am. Dear sir, The initiation made by Dr P.V.Konnur, Manjunath, K and Thimnappan, Dinesh K.S. are very much appreciated and should be welcomed by one and all librarian, teachers and students of lib.sc as well as those are directly related with lib & inf professional. In India there should be a platform at national level which can raise the issues and problems faced by us in every step of our routine work. Particularly in Academic Institute our profession was treated neither as academic nor administrative staff. Some institutes treated them as technical staff with out facility. Not only that we are only against us. Those who are in the higher post they never think for subordinates either due to lake of knowledge or due to jealousness, Hence at least if we would coordinate and unite we could have a say and voice of ourselves. We could help each other for awareness and information. With in two months of joining my self in t his forum I have received several useful information. Thanks to the forum. UNESCO is launching Internet discussion on Open Educational Resources Toolkit 11-06-2008 (Paris) The UNESCO Community on Open Educational Resources (OER) is launching an Internet discussion in order to provide input to the finalisation of an OER Toolkit, which has been created to support the development and use of Open Educational Resources. The session will take place from 16 to 27 June 2008 and will be open to everybody. OER Toolkit is a UNESCO initiative. The draft text has been prepared by Philipp Schmidt of the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The work was inspired by, and builds on a discussion organized by the UNESCO OER Community in 2006, which focused on a 'Do-It-Yourself/Do-It-Together' resource aimed at building capacity for local OER development and use. The UNESCO OER Community has become a recognised international space for debate and information sharing on the growing OER movement. It recently received the 2008 MERLOT Africa Network and eLearning Africa (MANeLA) Leadership Award. This award recognises the community's "significant contribution to the global understanding of the issues and innovations surrounding OER and the OER movement". Dear Friends, The Indian Academic Library Association (IALA) has submitted its memorandum to the UGC-PRC committee. We have been called to make our presentations at Hyderabad and Bangalore. We have also sought their appointment at Delhi also before finalization of their report. The members of the IALA have met all the PRC members personally at New Delhi in their offices and residences including the chairman Prof.Chadda and Member Secretary Shri.Chouhan. The Chairman and members are very much convinced of the gravity of the problems of the Academic Librarians and have assured us that they will look in to the issues sympathetically. Now the committee is visiting the professionals in one university in every state. Dear Friends, Today I am really happy that a constructive suggestion has come on the forum regarding Library Associations. I have been sevirly pained and protested in different forums againist the dictatorship attitudes of the people who are holding the treads of the Associations. Some of them are still feeling that our predecessors have formed the Associations for them to rule. They still feel that they can recruit (Not elect) anybody as president and through away whenever they want after the elections. If we have such people in the Associations definetly we deserve today's situation. However we have formed Indian Academic Library Association (IALA) because our demands are different from others. If the Associations do not advocate our cause properly before the PRC (Pay Review Committees) we will be denied of our opportunities as happend last time. Academic Librarians in India suffered for one long DECADE without any promotional opportunities. Some of them retired without any promotions. I thank the Academic Librarian community for supporting IALA. To day we have been able to convince the PRC committee members individually as well collectively. I am sure we will get the much awaited ACADEMIC STATUS PAR WITH THE TEACHERS. We will fight till the last for restoring the grievances of the Academic Librarians. We still desire that there should be an APEX body at national level. ILA should hold this crown. But ILA should also prove its worth to hold the same??? The national ILA body should be based in New Delhi and should have influential office bearers who can have strong links with Govt and other bodies. The national body needs to function through its regional associations (four or more), State Units (one for each state), District bodies and Local chapters. The World Bank e-Library (www.worldbank.org/elibrary (http://www.worldbank.org/elibrary)) is an electronic portal to the World Bank's full-text collection of books, reports, and other documents. It brings together in a fully indexed and cross-searchable database over 4,500 titles published by the World Bank during the past several years and every new title. E-Library includes all current and recent World Bank titles, documents, and papers in PDF format. New titles become available as soon as they appear in print. In addition, subscribers have access to information not available in print. World Bank e-Library should interest academic and special libraries with substantial economic development collections. World Development Indicators (WDI) Online (publications.worldbank.org/WDI (http://publications.worldbank.org/WDI)) is the premier data source on the global economy. It contains statistical data for over 800 development indicators and time series data from 1960 for over 200 countries and 18 country groups. Data include social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental indicators. Data selection screens are intuitive and easy to use. Results can be scaled, charted, and mapped. Data can also be exported in standard formats like Excel. The database is updated periodically with annual data loaded in May. WDI Online is crucial for the study of international development patterns and trends and is widely used in sociology, economics, political science, business and many other fields. Global Development Finance (GDF) Online (publications.worldbank.org/GDF (http://publications.worldbank.org/GDF)) is unique in its depth of coverage of the issues related to international development finance. By putting all development-related flows in a consistent framework, the database will allow government officials, economists, investors, financial consultants, academics, bankers, and the entire development community to better understand, manage, and promote the key challenges of financing development. Global Development Finance Online offers external debt and financial flow data for over 130 countries that report public and publicly guaranteed debt to the World Bank's Debtor Reporting System. Time series includes over 200 indicators from 1970. The database is updated periodically with annual data loaded in January. Africa Development Indicators (ADI) Online (publications.worldbank.org/ADI (http://publications.worldbank.org/ADI)) provides the most comprehensive collection of data on Africa available. It contains data for over 1,000 statistical indicators and time series from 1965 for 53 countries. Data include social, economic, financial, natural resources, infrastructure, governance, partnership, and environmental indicators. Designed to provide all those interested in Africa with a focused and convenient set of data monitoring development programs and aid flows in the region, Africa Development Indicators Online is an invaluable reference tool for analysts and policymakers who want better understanding of the economic and social developments occurring in the region. Global Economic Monitor (GEM) Online (www.worldbank.org/gem (http://www.worldbank.org/gem)) features up-to-date analysis of global economic conditions, it combines World Bank in-house products that focus on the "external environment" for developing countries. Features include daily commentary on key economic news stories and monthly analysis covering the full spectrum of country- and market developments, daily data covering commodity prices, exchange rates, interest rates, equity market developments and bond spreads and monthly data covering key macroeconomic, financial, and trade indicators, forecasts for commodity prices and main macroeconomic indicators for over 130 countries.
