<bigger>Dear All, We would like to have the names and address details of leading booksellers (of both new and old books) who maintain good stock of books in the following areas: <bold>forestry, horticulture, ethnobotany, soil science, plant taxonomy, entomology, sacred groves, and philosophy </bold>Particularly, we are interested in famous old bookshops which specialise in books published during the pre- and post-Independence era.<bold> We are interested in books published in India as well as abroad, especially the classic works, in the above mentioned areas.</bold> <bold><bigger><bigger>About the Dharma Vana Arboretum</bold><smaller><smaller> Spanning 455+ acres in Bhongir, Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh, the Dharma Vana Arboretum (www.arboretum.org.in) would conserve thousands of species of plants and over a thousand tree species, many of which are endangered, through innovative horticultural and silvicultural practices that meet or exceed international standards. The DVA will be among the largest arboreta in the world and the largest located in a semi-arid tropical climate. Its primary scientific mission is to collect and preserve threatened and endangered species of indigenous plants, with an emphasis on the Deccan Plateau and the Eastern Ghats. A special focus will be on trees of medicinal, ethnobotanical, aromatic, ornamental, and religious significance, in addition to cultivating trees of no particular value. MULISSA Inauguration - RFID Technology

Dear Professionals, MULISSA inauguration function was held at the Department of Library and Information Science, Mysore University. The chief guest Shri B.R Badhri spoke abut the history of RFID technology, its relevance in different industries and its use in libraries. He also spoke about Library Management Systems, their functional as well as technical aspects. How RFID technology works, along with its uses in cost effectiveness, multiple languages, book drop unit, improved services through prior reservation and prevention of theft were addressed. RFID is an off-shoot of barcoding which has been around for 40 years. A chip embedded in a book can have details such as author, title, subject, edition etc and this information can be accessed at the circulation desk itself. The technology enables automatic identification of objects. In the case of libraries, it is applied to books journals, CDs etc. Chairperson and faculty advisor for MULISSA, Dr Khaiser Nikam briefed about the history of the Department and the role of Dr. P.K. IFLA LIS Student Paper Award 2009 IFLA offers an “IFLA Library and Information Science (LIS) Student Paper Award”, coordinated by the IFLA Section Education and Training Standing Committee (SET SC). Objectives of the Award Encourage LIS students to submit papers regarding the current IFLA World Library and Information Congress theme. Reward the best LIS student paper submission for the IFLA Congress each year. Give LIS students the opportunity to take part in an IFLA Congress. Give LIS students the chance to learn more about IFLA activities. Prepare and encourage the new LIS Generation to participate in IFLA activities. The target group is LIS students from all over the world, who are enrolled in a course of study for the “first professional qualification” (e.g. bachelor/graduate diploma/master) in the country of study. PhD students are not eligible for the award. All IFLA Sections are requested to open their Call for Papers to students. Accepted student papers will be given either in the relevant Section’s conference session or, if appropriate, in the SET Open Session. To help students with less experience in abstracts/paper writing, templates for both the abstract and the paper are published on the SET website, http://www.ifla.org/VII/s23/index.htm To apply for the award, LIS students whose abstracts have been accepted by any IFLA Section should follow these guidelines: Submit the following three (3) items: the full conference paper; copy of any IFLA Section's letter of acceptance; letter of recommendation from the student's LIS Professor. The criteria to measure quality and relevance of the papers are: Related to the theme of the IFLA Congress and the sub theme/s of the relevant Section; Relevance to current issues in the topic field including reference to appropriate literature; Quality of ideas, methods, results or substance; Quality of writing and referencing. The papers will be reviewed by the IFLA LIS Student Paper Award Committee, consisting of current elected members of the SET SC. Up to three finalists will be recognized by the committee for their outstanding achievements. From these three finalists, one winner will be chosen to receive financial support to attend the IFLA Congress. The 1st IFLA LIS Student Paper Award 2009 can include (if funds permit): 1 year’s free IFLA membership, Current IFLA Congress registration fee, Grant for economy airfare and economical lodging, Publication of the paper in the IFLA Journal. Second and third place finalists will receive a certificate. The possibility of offering a monetary award to the second and third place finalists will depend on the amount of sponsorship received. NISCAIR announces its following forthcoming short term course: Course title: "Bibliometric Tools and Techniques for Measurement and Evaluation of Research Output" Duration: 24-28 November 2008 Topics covered: Bibliometrics and associated areas, elements and laws, tools and techniques, quantitative and qualitative indicators, derivation and testing of performance measures, scientific collaboration and citation impact, advanced data analysis methods, bibliometric technology, carrying out studies, writing articles/reports on bibliometrics etc. Target audience: LIS Faculty, Research Scholars & Students interested in Bibliometrics, Library staff of R&D institutes and universities NISCAIR expertise: NISCAIR has a strong bibliometrics unit that provides various bibliometric services including providing analytical research output reports of research institutions, individual scientists and so on.
