According to the Report of the Committee to Review the Pay Scales and Service Conditions of University and College Teachers, 2008 Policy regards Librarians and D.P.E.s Most representatives of Librarians and D.P.E.s expressed satisfaction over the fact that parity had been maintained between their scales of pay and those of teachers at various levels and urged the present Pay Review Committee to continue to maintain this. However, they made the following observations about their service and working conditions and wanted the Committee to make suitable recommendations in this regard: 4.18.1 Promotion under CAS for Deputy Librarians/Deputy D.P.Es While any number of Readers or Associate Professors could become Professors through the process of promotion under CAS, similar privileges were not available to Deputy Librarians or Deputy D.P.Es in universities since there is only one Librarian/D.P.E in the university. Therefore, some promotion facilities to Deputy Librarians and Deputy D.P.Es should be made available. 4.18.2 Research Projects, Sabbatical/Study Leave and Vacation facilities Librarians/D.P.E.s While the Librarians/D.P.Es have been recognized as teachers, many privileges like eligibility for applying for major and minor research projects, various kinds of leaves like the study and sabbatical leave, end of the session vacations were not available to them. These should be extended to them as well. 4.18.3 Upgradation of skill Librarians/D.P.E.s The situation of libraries and sports facilities, according to most library/sports staff representatives present in various meetings, was very pathetic since in most places the positions of librarians/D.P.Es were lying vacant and there was hardly any professional staff to manage them. There were also no opportunities for them to improve their professional skills through Refresher Courses or Orientation Programmes although the management of libraries as well as sports had become quite challenging thanks to the introduction of computers, and many other technical inputs. 4.18.4 Other professional staff of libraries and sports as academic staff It was also brought to the notice of the Committee that other professional staff like Professional Assistants, Cataloguers in libraries and Coaches etc., had been kept out of the purview of the Pay Review Committee since they had not been recognized as academic staff. The participants wanted them to be also recognized as academic staff and given appropriate scales of pay and other privileges. -- Ajay M. In addition to the points raised by Mr. Baban Chavan, I want to add one more point that for direct recruitment as deputy librarian in a University, one should have ten publications in indexed/ ISSN numbered journals or books having ISBN, whereas the required no. for Associate Professor is five. Thus, UGC asks more qualifications for direct recruitment to deputy librarians in one hand, while placing the salary in a much lower scale compared to associate professors. Through its Memory of the World programme, UNESCO aims to promote preservation of, and disseminate information regarding, documentary heritage found in archival holdings and library and museum collections worldwide. The Memory of the World Registers list documentary heritage of recognized world significance assessed on the basis of specific criteria outlined in the UNESCO Memory of the World General guidelines to safeguard documentary heritage. National Workshop on KOHA

Dear All, [Apologies for seeing this message more than once] Department of Library and Information Science, University of Calicut in association with C H M K Library, University of Calicut is organizing a Two-Day National Workshop on Integrated Library Automation Package Koha scheduled to be held on 20-21 March 2009, at the INFONET Centre, University of Calicut. The purpose of the Workshop is to familiarize the participants with the open source KOHA software developed by Katipo Communications, New Zealand. KOHA is considered as a highly sophisticated Integrated Library System (ILS) in the open source domain which offers full featured ILS including OPAC, circulation, cataloguing, acquisitions, serials control etc. Objectives: • To introduce the LINUX operating system to the LIS professionals. • To acquaint the participants with the installation of KOHA. • To provide extensive hands on training to the participants so as to enable them to work independently. Target Audience The Workshop will be of immense benefit to LIS professionals working in any type of library. The number of participants is restricted to 30 and admission will be strictly on a first-come-first-served basis. Extensive practical sessions/hands on training, enriched with interactive sessions will be the hallmark of the programme. A partnership with the non-profit Internet Archive will see 21 major Nasa imagery collections merged into a single searchable online resource. The launch is the first step in a five-year partnership that will add millions of images and thousands of hours of video and audio content, with enhanced search and viewing capabilities and new user features. Over time, the integration of Nasaimages.org will become more seamless and comprehensive with the main Nasa site. New resource also will enable the agency to digitise and preserve historical content now not available on the internet for future generations. The authors may intimate their intention to contribute the paper by email to the *Organising Secretary* latest by February 28, 2009. The contributed papers will be peer reviewed by the editorial committee and its decision to accept the paper for the conference volume shall be final and binding on the contributors. The contributed paper should be confined to 2000-2500 words printed on A4 size page in 11 point type size with 1.5 line spacing. A copy of the paper may also be sent by email to the *Organizing Secretary*alongwith the hardcopy addressed to the *Chairman* of the Organising Team. The hardcopy of the paper should be submitted alongwith authorization for editing the manuscript and also that the paper is original and does not violet provisions of the copyright law.
