*Content Management System - Why Joomla?* Now a days, there is a common question that which content management system is better viz. Joomla or Drupal or other CMS?. In my opinion, If you are a developer and comfortable with php, fixing bugs and plugins, Drupal will be the best option over other CMS. But, if you don't want to touch the developing part, Joomla can be a best option. Both will meet your basic needs. However, I have found Joomla very easy and comfortable for developing a quick website. Here are some features of Joomla. 1. Installation is very simple. It can be installed easily on Windows as well as on Linux. 2. If you are not technically sound, it is good to start with Joomla. 3. Working with joomla is very easy. 4. It supports PHP, MySQL and Apache 5. It supports multimedia 6. It has a wide selection of free extension. Once it is installed, it can be assigned to different pages. 7. Administration is very easy. 8. There is facility to log in to the site and edit the site directly in browser. 9. Provision for more than one person to be able to edit the site 10. There are lot of open source components that can be plugged in to the site. For ex. Cost of training in open source software

Dear All I would like to add our experience of conducting several training programmes on NewGenLib, another open source library management software. These workshops have to be sponsored by one or other organization who have to pay for the cost of meals and refreshment and in some cases free (or subsidised) cost for accomodation, transportation, fees for guest faculty. In some cases our sponsors have donated to the support of NewGenLib so that it can continue to improve and meet new needs. The charges per participant has been in the region of Rs. 2500 to 3000 which just about covers costs and is not exhorbitant by any means. The Open Source movement can only succeed when it is community-driven and community-supported. Institutions should be willing to pay reasonable fees for ongoing support. Open Source does not mean FREE, it is really about freedom. A good example of how libraries in the US and Australia have provided support to Koha and Evergreen is worth mentioning. In fact, Koha support is now provided by commercial firms in US and even in India. I would also like to point out that, not only in the library field but also in open source products such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, Linux distributions, etc., community support is vital to their success. I believe that librarians in India should actively champion the cause of open source solutions by offering their moral and technical support to endeavours such as Koha and NewGenLib. Managements of Instns., should be told of the long-term cost-benefit of the movement and its benefits to society in general. HCL spokesperson Beth Brainard confirmed for the LJ Academic Newswire that the nation’s wealthiest university, in an attempt to reduce its budget for next year by some $12 million, will realign services to streamline its operations, and will likely face staff cuts this spring. The Crimson reported the talk of job cuts comes after faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Michael D. Smith requested 10 to 15 percent reductions in department and center budgets for the fiscal year beginning in July. In addition to streamlined operations, the Crimson reported that budget cuts will also mean the elimination of print subscriptions for online materials, fewer copies of books, and “reductions in binding, shelving, and storage” of materials. “A simple solution is not in front of us,” Cline told reporters. Layoffs are the very last thing we would like to do, but there seems to be no other way to achieve the budget savings we must reach.” Brainard told the Newswire that the cut is directly associated with the staggering loss of 30 percent of Harvard’s endowment. “Half of the library’s budget is funded by the endowment,” she noted. Library Organizations To File Amicus Brief in Google Book Search Settlement

Dear Friends, The American Library Association (ALA), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announced this week that they will file an amicus brief pertaining to the pending Google Book Search settlement. ARL associate executive director Prue Adler told the LJ Academic Newswire. The decision to file an amicus brief from the library community comes after significant discussion among library leaders. Perhaps, above all, it reveals the uneasy position libraries find themselves in as the Google settlement hurtles forward. Despite the potential implications for libraries and the public, the blunt instrument of an amicus brief may be the only formal voice libraries now have in the wide-ranging final settlement, one that could very well shape the future market for access to books. In a statement issued after last week’s meeting, library leaders said their concerns revolved around five broad themes: access, privacy, intellectual freedom, equitable treatment, and terms of use. Adverse effect of Internet!

Dear all, In my opinion the Internet Age has made professional librarians a lazy bunch. I miss the level of sincerity at cataloging. Subject descriptors are treated perfunctorily. Interaction with the serious kind of research based users is often avoided. Language skill and communication ability are not being given the required weight. The ready availability of information at the click of a mouse (if even we don't understand the import of it)and the ability of search engines to retrieve pieces of information embedded in documents are turning away the young generation of librarians from the labor of cultivating knowledge and understanding. Overall, this is adversely impacting our analytical skills and the faculty of synthesis. NCSTC Rajat Jayanti Science Communicator Fellowship 2009 Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowship Proposals are invited for twenty Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowships instituted by Rashtriya Vigyan Evam Pradyogiki Sanchar Parishad, Department of Science & Technology. The Fellowship recognizes Science Communicators with uniformly brilliant academic record and field work. It also supports innovative Science Communication efforts in selected scientific institutions/universities/S&T based voluntary organizations under the guidance of a senior science communicator. The candidates below 35 years on 31.12.2009 (relaxable by 5 years for Women) must possess a graduation or higher degree in science, engineering, medical science, agriculture, information technology, mass communication etc. from a recognized university. The duration of the fellowship will be for one year and will comprise honorarium of Rs. 12000/- per month (16000/- in case of a Ph.D) and an annual contingency of Rs. 30000/- and travel grant of Rs. 15000/-. According to him 'Despite a thriving global computer security industry that is projected to reach $79 billion in revenues next year, and the fact that in 2002 Microsoft itself began an intense corporatewide effort to improve the security of its software, Internet security has continued to deteriorate globally...... '(T)here is a growing belief among engineers and security experts that Internet security and privacy have become so maddeningly elusive that the only way to fix the problem is to start over. 'What a new Internet might look like is still widely debated, but one alternative would, in effect, create a “gated community” where users would give up their anonymity and certain freedoms in return for safety. Today that is already the case for many corporate and government Internet users. As a new and more secure network becomes widely adopted, the current Internet might end up as the bad neighborhood of cyberspace.
