Sad Demise of Prof P N Kaula It is hard to believe that Padmasree Prof P N Kaula, an eminent scholar, a great teacher, internationally renowned library scientist, a doyen is no more. Prof Kaula passed away on August 30, 2009 around at 12.00 noon due to cardiac arrest. The sad demise of Prof Kaula is a great loss for the LIS profession. He was a life member of IASLIC and was associated with different activities of. IASLIC. With his guiding comments and suggestions IASLIC has been enriched its services in different aspects. With heavy heart, on behalf of IASLIC, I pry to have peace and mental strength to the family members to bear this irreparable loss. Dear Friends, Development of Libraries is Necessary Sri Sam Pitroda, Chairman, National Knowledge Commission, told that, today our country has got 54 thousand libraries and people should make use of these libraries to their needs. He delivered special lecture on ‘Towards the Knowledge Society - The Imperatives’ in Shivarathreeswara Centre, JSS Educational Institutions Premises, 18th Cross, 8th Block, Jayanagar, Bangalore on Sunday 30th Aug 2009. There are libraries established by Scholl, colleges, dept. of public libraries and some of the private libraries. If all these libraries are connected, plenty of knowledge can be gained and preserved, he said. He has highlighted the necessity of establishing the separate National Library Commission. He/she is now viewed as an information manager, information navigator, cyber engineer, information disseminator, knowledge manager, etc. The specific way of managing scientific and technical information has become a major task for those who are expected to select, process, handle and transmit information. The currency of the information as well as the facilities for a rapid exchange of information are needed among scholars; scientists and even ordinary citizens. There has therefore been change in the goal and policy of those who are engaged in this task at different levels. Private organizations and Trusts/Endowments have come forward to help in promoting and encouraging those who are engaged in this task as stated above. Recognition and honour are to be given to those who apart from serving the profession, help in motivating those who want to achieve excellence in the field. The Trust of Prof Kaula Endowment for Library and information Science has completed 25 years. It is our pleasure to state that the tiny sapling cultivated by the Board of Trustees in March 1975, has grown into a mighty tree through the efforts of the members of the Trust and their services. In fact it was Dr P S G Kumar who had initiated the work of the Trust which is now well known all over the world. I record with appreciation the programme and work of the Trust particularly in selection of distinguished experts from different countries and from our own country for the two prestigious Gold medals instituted by the Trust. A period of 25 years is a milestone in the history of the Trust. It is our hope and prayer that the Trust may grow further with innovative and expanded activities in the coming years to enable it to celebrate its Golden Jubilee when professionals from future generations would be able to appreciate and benefit from its activities. The contents of this brief report are given overleaf. We would welcome any suggestion for the extension of the work of the Endowment. ICT competency standards for teachers: implementation guidelines, version 1.0 The ICT competency standards for teachers have been designed by UNESCO and its partners to help educational policy-makers and curriculum developers identify the skills teachers need to harness technology in the service of education. Developed in cooperation with Cisco, Intel and Microsoft, as well as the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), the standards consist of three parts: * a policy framework explaining the rationale, structure and approach of the project; * a competency standards modules’ structure, which crosses the components of educational reform with various policy approaches to generate a matrix of skill sets for teachers; and * implementation guidelines providing a detailed syllabus of the specific skills to be acquired by teachers within each skill set or module.
