Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was one of the most distinguished diplomats, scholars and teachers of India, apart from being the first Vice President and the second President of the country. As a tribute to this great teacher, his birthday is observed as Teacher's Day across India. As a matter of fact, when his students and friends asked him for the permission to celebrate his birthday, it was he who asked them to celebrate the day as Teacher's Day, honoring the efforts of teachers across the country. Birth & Education Dr. S Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, at Tiruttani, forty miles to the northeast of Chennai (then Madras), in South India. His early years were spent in Tiruttani and Tirupati, both famous as pilgrim centers. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Arts from Madras University. In April 1909, he was appointed to the Department of Philosophy, at the Madras Presidency College. From then onwards, he was engaged in a serious study of Indian philosophy and religion, and went on to become a teacher of Philosophy. Professional Life In 1918, Doctor Radha Krishnan was appointed as the Professor of Philosophy, in the University of Mysore. Three years later, he was appointed as a Professor to King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science in the University of Calcutta. Dr. Radhakrishnan even represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities of the British Empire in June 1926 and the International Congress of Philosophy at the Harvard University in September 1926. In 1929, Dr. Radhakrishnan was invited to take the post vacated by Principal J. Estin Carpenter, in Manchester College, Oxford. In Oxford, Dr. Radhakrishnan lectured the students on Comparative Religion. From 1936-39, he served as the Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethic,s at Oxford University. In 1939, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy. From 1939-48, he was the Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University. He later held offices that dealt with India's national and international affairs. He was the leader of the Indian delegation to UNESCO during 1946-52. Dr. Radhakrishnan served as the Ambassador of India to U.S.S.R. during 1949-52. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of India. His Works Dr. Radhakrishnan penned down a number of books during his lifetime, some of which are like The Hindu View of Life, The Idealist View of Life, Religion and Society, Eastern Religions and Western Thought and A Source Book in Indian Philosophy. He had also written for some of the most reputed international journals. Presidency Of India Dr. Radhakrishnan was the Vice-President of India from 1952 to 1962 and the President, General Conference of UNESCO, from 1952 to 1954. He held the office of the Chancellor, University of Delhi, from 1953-62. In May 1962, Dr. Radhakrishnan became the President of India, a post he served till May 1967. He was honored with Bharat Ratna in 1954. He was also knighted by the British government in the year 1931, but, he used only his academic title ‘Doctor’ throughout his life. Teacher's Day In Different Countries China Teachers' Day was founded at National Central University in 1931. It was adopted by the central government of Republic of China, in 1932. In 1939, the day was set on August 27, Confucius's birthday. People's Republic of China government abrogated it in 1951. It was reestablished in 1985, and the day was changed to September 10. Now more and more people are trying to revert the Teachers' Day back to Confucius's birthday. India In India, Teachers' Day is celebrated on September 5, in honor of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. The 5th of September is his birthday. On the day, senior students in schools take up the responsibility of teaching their juniors, to show appreciation for their teachers. The day is not a holiday. It involves many activities in educational institutions. Russia In Russia, Teachers' Day was celebrated on the first Sunday of October, between 1965 and 1994. Since 1994, the day is observed on the 5th of October, coinciding with World Teacher's Day, established by UNESCO in 1994. USA In the United States, Teachers' Day is a non-official holiday on the Tuesday of the first full week of May. The day is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. A number of activities are organized in schools, to honor teachers. The celebrations may continue for the entire week of May. Thailand In Thailand, National Teacher's Day is celebrated every year, on January 16. The day was adopted as Teachers' Day in the island nation, by a resolution of the government on November 21, 1956. The first Teachers' Day was held in 1957. The day is declared as a holiday in schools. Iran In Iran, Teacher's Day is celebrated on May 2. It commemorates the assassination of Iranian professor Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari. The renowned writer, a timeless teacher, was executed on May 2, 1980. On the day, students offer flowers to teachers, to honor the sacred profession. Turkey In Turkey, Teacher's Day is celebrated on 24th of November. Kemal Atatürk dedicated November 24th to honor teachers and their profession. In the profession of teaching is regarded as something incomparable and sacred. There is no holiday on this day. Malaysia May 16 is dedicated to teachers, in Malaysia. The day is celebrated as Teacher's Day in the country, with great enthusiasm. The day is called 'Hari Guru' in Malaysia and is a working day. Since times immemorial, Indians have respected and idolized their teachers. Earlier, we used to call our teachers 'Guru' and now it's the contemporary 'Sir' or 'Madam'. Nevertheless, the role of teachers has remained the same. They were, are and will continue to be our guiding light, creating conditions conducive to our overall development. We will always be thankful to them for their constructive support. It is as an expression of this gratitude only that we celebrate Teacher's Day in India. Teacher's Day is a tribute to the hard work and devotion of the teachers all year long, to educate a child. In India, teacher’s day is celebrated on 5th of September every year. Indian Teacher’s Day is dedicated to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a zealous advocate of education and one of the greatest scholars and teachers of all times, apart from being the first Vice President and the second President of India. As a mark of respect to this phenomenal teacher, his birthday came to be observed as Teacher’s Day in the country. On Teacher's day, students across India dress up as their teachers and take lectures in classes that are assigned to the teachers they represent. Sometimes, teachers sit in their classes as students, trying to relive the time when they, themselves, were students. Also, functions are organized in schools on the special day, where students present dance performances, dramas, and various other programs to entertain their teachers. This day provides for a healthy interaction between teachers and students as well. This special issue will be guest edited by Drs. Paul F. Marty and Michelle M. Kazmer, College of Communication and Information, Florida State University, with Dr. Corinne Jorgensen (Florida State University), Katherine Burton Jones (Harvard Divinity School), and Richard J. Urban (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). DESCRIPTION Many libraries, archives, and museums provide their users with social computing environments that include the ability to tag collections, annotate objects, and otherwise contribute their thoughts to the knowledge base of the institution. Information professionals and users have responded to the transition to a web 2.0 world of user-created content by developing open source tools to coordinate these activities and researching the best ways to involve users in the co-creation of digital knowledge. This rapid influx of new technologies and new methods of interacting with users has come at a time when libraries, archives, and museums still struggle to share data across their own institutions, let alone between different types of institutions. Information professionals in libraries, archives, and museums had barely begun to make progress developing crosswalks and data interoperability standards when, as social computing became the norm on the web, providing the ability for users to manipulate data changed from a cool toy to a basic expectation. Moving forward -- and keeping pace with user expectations -- requires the coordination of many different users (in all their variety) as they contribute, participate, shape, and create all types of data in all types of contexts. We need to consider what social computing really means for the future of libraries, archives, and museums, and think carefully about the future trends and long-term implications of involving users in the co- construction of knowledge online. It is important to have broad-based discussions about what happens when users are involved in shaping and directing and guiding the development of online libraries, archives, and museums and their information resources. For this issue of Library Trends, therefore, we seek authors who can step back and think broadly about those issues that are raised when we bring users into the mix in various ways and at various points in the data/information/knowledge life-cycle. We are interested in receiving high-level theory pieces, supported by research data of course, but with a focus on the long-term trends involved and their implications for libraries, archives, and museums. In particular, we are looking for papers that explore the future trends and long-term implications of the many different ways in which information professionals in libraries, archives, and museums have, can, and should involve their users in the co-construction of digital knowledge based on their online collections. Sample questions include, but are certainly not limited to: * How are libraries, archives, and museums implementing user- contributed data / descriptions of artifacts, objects, or collections on their websites? What are the long-term implications of involving users in the co-description, co-cataloguing of digital knowledge? * How are libraries, archives, and museums encouraging users to create online collections of personal favorites or similar items on their websites? What are the implications of involving users in the design and structuring of online interfaces for the development and presentation of digital knowledge? * How is the education of library, archives, and museum practitioners (and in particular the increase in online and hybrid learning technologies) influencing the ways practitioners subsequently incorporate technology into their user service environments in libraries, archives, and museums? A condolence meeting was held on 1st September 2009 at 10 am at the sixteenth refresher course in library and information science held at UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Mysore, Mysore in connection with the sad demise of the stalwart of library and information science Prof. P.N. Kaula. In the condolence meeting held Dr. P.V. Konnur, University Librarian, Bangalore University narrated his experiences with Prof. Kaula. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana of Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore briefly presented the accomplishments of Prof. Kaula . Dr. M.K. Dear Colleagues, I feel it is a most saddening loss of the year when we have lost one of the most legendry scholar and stalwart, a great deciple, follower and disseminator of Rangantan's ideas and philosophy. He was the first Reader in the Department and to my understanding the student of first batch of M Lib Sc also. I got a chance to hear him number of times, he was an unparallel orator. He has contributed immensly for the growth and development of the profession. He has carved a niche not only for himself but also for the profession both at national level and international level. With his sad demise, the profession has lost a great scholar of the century. Profession and generations of professionals shall always remain indebted to him. Prof Kaula is 85 years age. Another bright star of the LIS profession Prof Kaula is no more. Today afternoon around at 12.00 noon due to cardiac arrest Prof Kaula left for heavenly abode. tomorrow tht is 31 Aug in the afternoon he will be cremated at Lucknow. there will be havan on 2 sept morning. as a student of Prof Kaula, i am indebted to him. today my survival in the filed is his blessings. Prof Kaula was teacher to most of the south Indian professionals who got admission due to Prof Kaula. He is real disciple of SRR and he mentioned his gratefulness to SRR at every place. News of sad demise of Hon'ble Prof. Kaula is really shocking for the library and information Propfessionals. i pray to god for the peace of departed soul.May god give the strenght to the family members and library professionals to bear this loss. Padmshree Prof. Kaula's death is a great loss for us. we should follow his sayings for flourishing the LIS profession. Just Published, NISTADS Report "India: Science and Technology 2008" India: Science and Technology 2008. Publisher: National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies (NISTADS), New Delhi, 2009. The country is entering the age of knowledge when increasing returns would be ubiquitous. The democratic governance structures of this country have evolved, over the course of six decades, sets of complex institutions systems and practices that bind or otherwise relate S&T to the other spheres. With about four thousand research and development organizations, large organized systems of knowledge production, millions of knowledge-workers and an even larger number of citizens trying to engage in knowledge-based activities ranging from agriculture through semi-skilled workers to industrial workers, coupled with the fact of the country being especially gifted with immense diversity in natural resources - the opportunity set of potential outcomes are immense and invigorating. The long twentieth century in Indian S&T based developmental experiments, in particular at grass roots, has thrown up immense volumes of data, facts and artifacts. A crucial issue emerges. The country very badly needs a strong mechanism to capture data related to S&T and innovation right from the regulatory or executive levels to source-points where S&T output or innovations get generated. This Report presents several facets of Indian S&T. In lieu of attempting the development of a set of traditionally known indicators of S&T, the attempt here has been to capture multiple facets of Indian economy and society where S&T makes contributions. With unstated theoretical bases, contributors presented research conclusions in the form of several portrayals. Given the fact that S&T interfacing the economy and society has very large dimensions this Report could take up only a handful. Such a collage offers albeit a picture of where Indian S&T is located. The report is the first of its kind from this country. It is targeted at a wide readership ranging from policy makers and advisors to academic readers as well as the common person. Dear Propfessionals, It is really sad to know about the sad demise of Prof.P.N.Kaula. He was indeed a great personality in this profession and would always be remembered for his contributions in the growth and development of this profession in this country. He was a great teacher, orator, leader and inspired many young professional in the country. His close association with Ranganathan is well know and is rightly called a great messenger of Rangantan's ideas and philosophy through his writings and lectures. I met Prof. Kaula first time in 1959 in Delhi University DLIS when he was working as a Reader there. I then joined as a Lecturer in the Institute of Library Science which had been established by the Govt. of India and was working as a part of DU,DLIS. From there he shifted to BHU as Librarian and also as HOD.BHU was the second University in India, after DU, to start M.Lib.Sc. course in the country and for that Prof. Kaula deserves a great credit.During the following yeras I always admired him for his qualities of head and heart. He was rightly honoured both nationally and internationally. He indeed lived a full life. I join other colleagues in conveying our heart-felt sympathies to the grieved family and pray that the departed soul may rest in peace. Prof.P.B.Mangla ex. UGC Fellowship

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to increase the scholarship amount for junior research fellowship (JRF) by 35 to 40 per cent. The move will ensure that researchers get money almost equivalent to the basic pay — Rs 20,800 per month — of entry-level Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officials and assistant professors UGC has also decided to hike scholarships for women pursuing post-doctoral fellowship by about four times. With this, women without research experience will get Rs 25,000 (which was Rs 6,000 earlier) while those with experience will get Rs 30,000 per month as against Rs 8,000 earlier. The contingency grant for these women scholars has been increased to Rs 50,000 per annum. The commission, earlier this month, decided that junior research scholars will now get Rs 16,000 per month (Rs 12,000 earlier) for first two years and Rs 20,000 (Rs 14,000 earlier) for the next three years. The physically challenged researchers will get an escort allowance of Rs 2,000 per month along with the scholarship. “The scholarship amount has been enhanced so that scholars don’t leave mid-day to join teaching,” UGC chairperson Sukhdeo Thorat said. The new scholarship amount — to be available to 6,500 researchers every year (doubled as compared to last year) — will be applicable from the new academic year 2009-10. Only students who have cleared the National Eligibility Test will be eligible for the scholarships. The proposal to enhance the scholarship was taken after a recommendation by RP Aggarwal, Higher Education Secretary in the HRD ministry. “The fellowship amount should be increased to 50 per cent subject to the condition that it is less than initial pay for a fresh appointee as assistant professor,” Aggarwal had told UGC in letter on July 30. Dear Friends, Wikipedia to Tinge Suspect Entries With Orange Cast Wikipedia plans to roll out a new feature with the goal of enhancing the site's credibility. Called "WikiTrust," the optional feature color codes entries based on reliability, according to a Wikipedia page describing the new development. The color-coding tool gives users a "check text tab" that reveals author, origin and reliability of the text. It has come up with a color-coding scheme that will assign an orange background to less-trustworthy information -- the darker, the more suspect -- and a white background to content that ranks high for accuracy.
