Workshop on Knowledge Transactions 15th 17th February, 2010 Organized by Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Bangalore 560059 Knowledge is perceived and understood differently according to the context and purpose of tasks at hand. Libraries and Information centres have been involved in knowledge transactions in the sense of organization of collections, systems leading to context based indexing and techniques in handling and representing knowledge. In the digital information world representation models are increasingly based on traditional and theoretical foundations of knowledge transactions. Legacy methods based on principles of Knowledge Organization are now being adapted for Knowledge conceptualizations and representation and developing representation languages, knowledge architecture and structures. At the same time knowledge modeling using popular W3C-SKOS, NKOS and RDFs are being implemented especially to structure, organize and manage information resources. Documentation Research and Training Centre, Indian Statistical Institute, announces a seminar on 'Knowledge Transactions' to bring together expertise in information communities and active stakeholders in the domain. The workshop will comprise of contributed papers, invited talks and demonstrations by resource persons, in areas pertaining to Knowledge Organization, Transactions and Management. The objective of the workshop is to provide a platform for discussions on latest developments in methods of knowledge transactions with a direct bearing and applications in Library and Information Science and services. The intended outcome is to enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants in methods of knowledge transactions. First Call for Proposals - The eIFL.net Public Library Innovation Program The new eIFL.net Public Library Innovation Program seeks to spark the development of innovative public library services with and for their communities. This first Call is designed to gather great ideas that introduce technology to meet user needs and help people improve their lives. This program is supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. eIFL.net invites public libraries or other organizations in developing and transitioning countries to submit proposals to develop innovative services for and by public libraries. Minutes of 5th TBR Memorial Seminar-2009

Dear Members It is great news to share that NCSI-Net successfully organized 5th TBR Memorial seminar on Building Institutional Repositories using Dspace on 14th November 2009 at Choksi hall, IISc, Bangalore. We are over whelmed by the kind of response got from students and budding LIS professionals. We had 92 registrations among which 73 were students and 19 young professionals from various universities and organizations. Seminar started with invocation song by Kum. Rajalaxmi, Mr. Francis Jayakanth briefed about NCSI, NCSI-Net and Objectives of the seminar. He highlighted late Dr. TBR’s passion towards teaching and educating young professional about latest developments in the field. First technical session started after coffee/tea break by Shri Francis Jayakanth with “An Overview on Institutional Repositories”, he spoke about history, issues, advantages and IR’s in Indian Scenario. Second talk was by Shri Filbert Minj on ‘Introduction to Dspace’, he highlighted various features, hardware & software requirements, etc, of Dspace, followed by Dspace Installation session by Shri Francis, Shri. Obaiah, and Shri. Arun. They showed installation of dependent software’s like JDK, PostgreSQL, Maven, Tomcat and Dspace. Second session stared after lunch. Prof. Giridhar Madras, Chairman NCSI, addressed gathering and emphasized the importance of Institutional Repositories and how LIS professional can play important role in setting up IR’s in their organizations. Prof. Giridhar Madras was felicitated on the occasion for his recent achievement (he was awarded with Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar award by CSIR, Govt of India). Shri Obaiah demonstrated the administration and customization of Dspace. Shri Satya Ranjan Sahu presented case study of NIO where they have setup IR using Dspace. He shared their experience and challenges faced in implementing their IR, and showed the usage Statistics of NIO IR. Shri KP Raghuram delivered interesting talk on Digitization & Preservation, where he covered different technologies for digitization, various file formats, OCR and issues concerning to preservation for future usage. After the tea break there was an interesting session on career advice, objective of this session was to help the students to build their career. Panelists from different background, Shri Satya Ranjan Sahu (Government R & D), Kum. Archana and Shri Anand Byarappa (Corporate) and Shri Francis Jayakant (Academic) shared their opinions. Smt. Suvarsha Minj moderated the discussion. Shri Rajendra Babu proposed vote of thanks. Sad Demise of Mr Subrata Dutta We are indeed sad to inform that Mr Subrarta Dutta, former Hony General Secretary, IASLIC has passed away due to massive cardiac arrest on November 21, 2009 at 3:00 am. The untimely demise of Mr Dutta is irrepairable. He served INSDOC, Kolkata as Scientist for a long period. After his retirement Mr Dutta was attached with CALIBNET for promoting its functioning and services. During his tenure as Hony General Secretary he took many positive steps to popularize the activities of IASLIC. Microsoft was banned to sell Windows in China

On Monday this week Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court ruled that Microsoft infringed in the licensing agreements it has with the Chinese technology company, Zhongyi Electronic, which designs Chinese character fonts. The court ordered the software giant to stop selling versions of its Windows operating systems that include fonts designed by this Chinese firm. Under the ruling Microsoft is to cease selling the Chinese versions of its Windows 98, 2000, 2003 and Windows XP. At the moment the date when the ruling takes effect is not disclosed with the number of affected copies also unknown. Meantime, the US company said it will appeal the ruling. In its statement Microsoft says: "Microsoft respects intellectual property rights. We use third party IPs only when we have a legitimate right to do so.” Zhongyi Electronic stated that the agreements signed only permitted Microsoft to use its intellectual property in Windows 95, but that the U.S. tech giant used it in subsequent versions of its Chinese Windows operating systems. "By winning this case against an internationally well-known company like Microsoft, it shows that China, although still a developing country, is taking positive steps to protect intellectual property rights," said Ling Xin Yu, the lawyer for Zhongyi told Reuters. Why, yes, this is truly nice on the part of Chinese justice to protect intellectual property as it has long been the case in many developed countries. Seems like the biggest copyright infringing nation rises to show its yell as an ardent advocate of patents and licenses.
