*Report of Informatics Endowment Lecture Series - 7 * Organizing the 7th Informatics Endowment Lecture Series on the 10th of February was a pleasant coincident with Informatics itself completing 30 years of its existence in the information business. The alma mater of N V Satyanarayana was very proud to hold this lecture series by Prof. Ramani who was at the University of Mysore, to deliver INFORMATICS ENDOWMENT LECTURE SERIES ON DIGITAL LIBRARIES – 7 on *Structured Information and Information Technology*. He started his lecture with a quote; “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing! Jimmy Wales”. He started his lecture with a remark about the volume of information that is being produced and the developments that are taken place in IT- Hardware, Software and Information Content. He dealt with several aspects relating to available web content forms and its economics. He gave a live demonstration of the results of a search that can be carried out on Google taking simple examples from E- Commerce and created curiosity among the audience regarding the accuracy of the information search and retrieval over the Web. He also touched on Web 2.0 movement and structured information and its potentialities and usability. He emphasized that there is ample scope for LIS professionals in facilitating information search and creating value added content and services. He was relating the present day Web Browsing to Browsing of books in a library. He was of the opinion that the structured data, tables, schemas help in collating information which is scattered over the Web. He was also of the view that the Semantic Web has not provided possible solution for the problem of accessing web content. The lecture was well attended by professionals from Bangalore, Mangalore, Mysore and the current batch of students and research scholars of the Department. A special thanks to Dr. K N Prasad, Executive Director, Dr. I R N Gouder, and Sri. V. L. Kalyan. Prof. Khaiser Nikam welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker, Dr. N. S. Moderated email forums: Is it too rigorous?

Dear All, Thanks to Internet, as we have a plenty of email discussion forums in LIS. In India, some of the discussion lists are moderated by List Owners, but others are free-for-all discussion groups without message filtering measures. Currently, the number of messages appearing in moderated lists is meagre when compared to the other category. If email from subscribers to a moderated list is not got posted, it is quite natural that they may bypass such lists. Is it a welcome trend? Venkatachalam, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, on Wednesday said that the Ministry was doing its best to overcome manpower shortage that affected national health programmes, including the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD). Scarcity of professionals in the field of speech and hearing was acute and the Ministry was addressing the problem by supporting the initiatives taken up by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), he said. Launching the Digital Library Portal of the AIISH Library and Information Centre here, Mr. Venkatachalam said the national programmes launched for public health lacked trained professionals. “Manpower is not available to support the initiatives launched under the programmes. Therefore, we have introduced a few initiatives to ensure manpower to implement the programmes,” he said. Promising support and resources to AIISH in carrying forward its activities, he said the Ministry had been supporting its programmes and would continue to do so for its development. Infrastructure at the institute was on par with any other national institute, he said. Lauding AIISH for launching the Digital Library Portal, he said the portal would benefit many as information available in the library could be accessed from anywhere, anytime. He said the portal would also help those pursuing courses under distance education system launched by AIISH to overcome the shortage of speech and hearing professionals. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore V.G. Talawar said the facilities provided for accessing information digitally should be used effectively. Not many scholars, academics and teachers were making use of the e-journal facility launched by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) in which over 5,000 journals could be accessed online. “According to some surveys, only 39 per cent are making use of the facility though the journals are available in all disciplines. It is not a good trend. More and more people should make use of information for their academic prospects,” Dr. Talawar said. He urged students, research scholars and therapists to use the portal of AIISH. AIISH Director Vijayalakshmi Basavaraj said the portal was conceived two years ago and could be accessed free of cost. Shortly, the National Medical Library in New Delhi could be accessed through the portal as its approval was awaited. “Once it is done, over 1,532 journals can be accessed from our portal,” she said. Ajish Abraham, head of the Department of Electronics, AIISH, gave an overview of the portal and its benefits. He said the availability of online search allowed users to locate relevant information quickly and reliably, thus enhancing success in their research endeavours. I am glad that you have served the patent community, but patent documents are different from ETDs, calling for a different strategy. It is nice to hear that you wish to serve the ETD community. NDLTD is happy to work with partners, if we indeed can discuss and cooperate. John Hagen shared your draft announcement with me, and informed me that Gail, Thom, and he plan to talk with you about the press release and other matters. I am very glad they have been working with you, but was very concerned about your email today, and I'm rather unhappy with the tone of the press release, believing it mis-represents the current situation, and has other aspects that will be confusing and troublesome. Meanwhile, your recent action has, as was reported by R. Mutt, been harmful. As Executive Director of NDLTD I am writing to urge immediate action on your part to remove the full-texts ETDs that still appear from your site, e.g., http://www.openthesis.org/document/pdfView/22231.pdf As you have heard from others on our Board of Directors, you have taken a very unwise course of action, and may suffer serious consequences, even if you act now, but the situation will only get worse if you persist in illegal behavior. When you came to ETD 2009, I and others made it perfectly clear that we would be happy to discuss ways that you might assist the ETD community. But we never heard or saw any details about your plans until you put them in place in an inappropriate way. Reaching us was not hard, given information on our web site, and I personally gave you my contact information when we met in Texas (see also at the bottom of this message), so I am surprised and highly displeased by your failure to communicate your intentions, and by your unwise actions. Inviting the large number of subscribers to ETD-L to a phone discussion about this also seems very unwise. I hope people will not respond in numbers, complaining. I plan to call at 2pm EST tomorrow, though I already have another meeting at 2:30pm, so cannot stay long. But I am not sure how worthwhile it will be to talk now unless your actions demonstrate your willingness to cooperate. You launched your service 1/28, and though told on 2/2 about concerns, now, almost a week later, have not corrected the situation. The legal term is that I urge you to "cease and desist". I'd suggest after that a press release apologizing, and saying that you are exploring other types of services, which will be announced soon. Mr. Bhanu Potta, faculty for ECM to the M.Tech students of ISiM, then introduced the two guests - Dr. Arun Gowda and Mr. Arjun Thomas. Of the two speakers, Dr. Arun Gowda who is currently the Global Product Manager with Emerging Market Services Unit of Nokia was the first one to address the gathering. Dr. Arun delivered his lecture on the topic of ECM in Pharma Research Enterprises. He started off the presentation by pointing out that the latest cinematic blockbuster - AVATAR had a script that ran into 6000 pages and it grossed USD 2 bn worldwide. With that as yardstick, he asked the audience to imagine what amount of content must have been developed to bring out 'Lipitor' - cholesterol reducing drug by Pfizer grossing an yearly revenue of over USD 10 bn for over a decade now. Citing this as a metric of the amount of content/research that goes into the making of a Pharma product. He then gave an insight in to the typical life cycle of a pharma drug and the various types of content that gets generated all along. He further pointed out that the typical drug related content follows a life cycle of five stages - Collection, Storage, Processing, Analysis and Dissemination. All along the data cycle, the technology acts as the enabler to draw conclusions and interpretations. He acknowledged the role of the Web crawlers, Analytic tools, Data mining techniques and Advanced Search features in assisting the clinical research. Dr. Arun then went on to point out the various forms of content that get generated during the lifecycle of drug research. The Clinical Test Protocol, Case reports Forms and Clinical Trial Data forms the bulk of data. These data, which is inherently confidential in nature is then stored in a secure database. The data is then analyzed employing advanced Clinical Trial Data Management (CDM) softwares. The analysis is done by the copy editors, Statisticians and Medical writers who report their findings through Regulatory Submission Reports, Posters and Publications among other means. He stressed that the entire process is carried out under utmost data confidentiality environments, perhaps next only to those in automobile manufacturing industry. He made a special mention of Oracle, Accenture and Quintiles as the leading technology providers for clinical R&D data analysis. Pennside, PharmARC, Genpact and TCS are some of the companies known for their expertise in Pharma related Data Analytics. The second part of the seminar was on the topic of 'ECM in IT Enterprises' presented by, Mr. Arjun Thomas, Sr. Consultant at the Knowledge Management Office at Dell Perot Systems. Mr. Arjun started his presentation by defining the ECM as applicable to the IT enterprise. He pointed out that the IT companies typically ride the wave of ECM and are more likely to endorse new trends in the field. He pointed out that since the advent of the Web 2.0 framework, many new channels of content creation have emerged. He compiled most of the new channels in a wagon wheel picture. He particularly, pointed out the popularity of Wiki's, Facebook, Blogs, Folksonomy, YouTube, RSS feeds and Slide Share among our generation and their impact on the social life. In a lighter vein, he also pointed out that "These days, one is so busy social networking on the internet that he has no time for face-to-face socializations". He then put forth the concept of incorporating these tools within an organization's intranet to engage the employees as an organizational strategy. Such a technique could result in better dissemination of information, formation of collective opinions and effective management of human resources. He also opined that such a framework can also be employed to create whitepapers to capture knowledge and expertise that could be archived for later use. He further mentioned how the ECM tools can be leveraged to meet organizational goals. He concluded his talk with some tips on looking out for usability and customer experience factors to create an effective ECM system. The event concluded with Prof. Shalini proposing the 'Vote of Thanks' and presenting the speakers with a memento.
