Dear Forum members, The Indian LIS Professionals (http://lislinks.ning.com/) is India’s largest social networking site for the Library and Information Science professionals with 2500+ moderated membership. The “ning” authority says that they will close all free service from 4th May, 2010. It all means that “Indian LIS Professionals” social networking site will be deleted or else they will do the job. How we can survive in this environment. Which options to choose, please speak out. Options are. a) Asking members to pay a little from their own pocket so that we can make the payment from our end (Hey friends, most probably it will cost only Rs. 100 per member for a year, though higher donation are highly desirable). Our Answer: We will go for this option if we receive more than 500 comments in favor of it on or before April, 30, 2010. Dear all, INFLIBNET has launched N-List programme, the details are hereunder. About NLIST *Background * The Project entitled "National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)", being jointly executed by the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi provides for i) cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by the two Consortia, i.e. subscription to INDEST-AICTE resources for universities and UGCINFONET resources for technical institutions; and ii) access to selected e-resources to colleges. The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre. *N-LIST: Four Components* The project has four distinct components, i.e. i ) to subscribe and provide access to selected UGC-INFONET e-resources to technical institutions (IITs, IISc, IISERs and NITs) and monitor its usage; ii) to subscribe and provide access to selected INDEST e-resources to selected universities and monitor its usage; iii) to subscribe and provide access to selected e-resources to 6,000 Govt./ Govt.-aided colleges and monitor its usage; and iv) to act as a Monitoring Agency for colleges and evaluate, promote, impart training and monitor all activities involved in the process of providing effective and efficient access to e-resources to colleges. The INDEST and UGC-INFONET are jointly responsible for activity listed at i) and ii) above. The INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad is responsible for activities listed at iii) and iv) above. The INFLIBNET Centre is also responsible for developing and deploying appropriate software tools and techniques for authenticating authorized users. *Current Status* As on March 15, 2010, a total number of 1,118 colleges have registered themselves with the N-LIST programme including 668 Govt. / Govt.-aided colleges covered under the 12 B Act of the UGC. Log-in ID and password for accessing e-resources has been sent to the authorized users from these 668 colleges. Remaining colleges are being advised to join the initiative as N-LIST Associates. All e-resources subscribed for colleges under the N-LIST Project are now accessible to these 668 colleges through the N-List website. Digitization is not a Long-Term Solution

Dear Friends This is a very important discussion. Mindless digitisation of old records may not be helpful in every situation or in all organisations. It would be a disaster if we don't preserve the original. The situation which we are facing right now in our organisation is exactly the issue raised in this discussion. Our records of 60 years are in Microfilm, but film is slowly deteriorating, Reader/ printers are not manufactured any more, Consumables for reader/ printers are not available, Good service providers are not forthcoming. we are fully aware of the disasters of digitisation as we are not in position to convert the back up tapes created in 2003. Experience of some institutions who lost their original documents in the process of digitisation and their digital copies are not readable have come to our knowledge.If digitised,every change in Hardware or software requires the updating of the whole record. Mike Doyle (D-PA) and a bi-partisan host of co-sponsors. The proposed bill would build on the success of the first U.S. mandate for public access to the published results of publicly funded research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and require federal agencies with annual extramural research budgets of $100 million or more to provide the public with online access to research manuscripts stemming from funded research no later than six months after publication in a peer-reviewed journal. “Free and open access to scientific literature and data are the underpinnings of discovery in the digital age,” said Stephen Friend MD PhD, President and Co-Founder of Sage Bionetworks. “Full collaboration among researchers is essential, and we have the power now to communicate, collaborate, and innovate in ways that were previously unimaginable. I applaud the sponsors of the Federal Research Public Access Act for their commitment to ensuring the kind of access scientists need to make progress on improved disease treatments and diagnostics in the digital world.” Like the Senate bill introduced in 2009 by Senators Lieberman (I-CT) and Cornyn (R-TX), H.R. 5037 would unlock unclassified research funded by agencies including: Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Science Foundation. H.R. 5037 follows closely on the heels of a recent expression of interest in public access policies from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, which issued a request for public comment on mechanisms that would leverage federal investments in scientific research and increase access to information that promises to stimulate scientific and technological innovation and competitiveness. “This bill recognizes the urgent need – and opportunity – to use digital technology to increase the pace of innovation,” added Elliot Schwartz, Vice President for Economic Studies at the Committee for Economic Development. “The bill is a crucial, welcome move toward advancing research through openness and avoiding making the taxpayer pay twice for taxpayer-funded research… it is good public policy.” The introduction of H.R. 5037 was also welcomed by leaders in the higher education community, who recognize this legislation helps to ensure the United States is positioned to continue to fuel education and innovation. WebWorld, the website of UNESCO's Communication and Information Sector, contains a large amount of information about the Sector's activities. Due to the complex website structure and the specificities of UNESCO's language, this information is not always easily accessible. Thanks to the new WebWorld service, Knowledgebase, users can now find what they are looking for in a few clicks. The Knowledgebase allows the search either by category or key word. The main categories cover the questions about the CI website, the Sector's various activities and institutional structure, as well as more general information about UNESCO's events, publications, job opportunities, fellowships, contacts, etc. The search is enriched by a smart suggest, which displays relevant suggestions in response to key words as they are typed.
