IATLIS – Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award, 2. IATLIS – Mrs. Ratna Laxman Rao Best Woman LIS Teacher / Professional Award 3. IATLIS – Prof. S.P. Narang Research Promotion Award Eligibility for IATLIS – Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award, and IATLIS – Mrs. Ratna Laxman Rao Best Woman LIS Teacher / Professional Award: Executive Council Members of IATLIS are not eligible to be nominated for these awards. Narang Research Promotion Award: For this year’s award, nominations only of students registered for Ph.D. in a recognized university would be considered. It was established in 1847 as College of Civil Engineering Roorkee which was renamed as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in the memory of James Thomason (then Lt. Governor of North West Provinces) in 1854. Thomason College was converted into University of Roorkee after independence in 1947 which now have been converted into Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee in 2001 by the Central Government recognizing its national importance. The Mahatma Gandhi Central Library Mahatma Gandhi Central Library of the Institute finds a unique place in the academic library scenario in this part of world. It is an amalgamation of the old and the new. While it is one of the oldest academic libraries in country, it is housed in a state of art new building using latest ICT. The Library contains more than 3.40 lacs documents in every form of media. It has access to more than 12000+ e-journals and 25000+ e-books. About 6000 books are added to its collection annually. The building of the MGCL has been designed keeping in view of latest ICT facilities. It has a provision of more then 200 I/Os for connecting desktop computers. Wi Fi connectivity is provided for laptops. A well equipped imaging centre with two Minolta Planetary Scanners and several flatbed scanners has been established for digitization purpose. The Library maintains six servers for various activities. The library has also established an Institute repository “Bhagirathi” which is to contain Institute achieves and other publications and available at http://bhagirathi.iitr.ac.in/dspace . ABOUT ROORKEE Roorkee is situated at the foot of Himalayas, has picturesque landscape blessed with holy Ganga canal and is the gateway to world famous pilgrimage and tourist places of Hardwar, Rishikesh, Valley of flowers, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Dehradun and Mussoorie. It has a population of over 1,50,000 and is at a distance of about 180 Km from Delhi. It is directly connected through railways to Delhi, Bombay, Lucknow, Calcutta, and Amritsar. Regular bus and taxi service is available from Inter State Bus Terminal at Delhi and takes about 5 hours from Delhi to Roorkee. The weather in November is very comfortable however sometimes light woolens may be required. Participants are advised to come prepared accordingly. INDEST-AICTE Consortium Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST) Consortium” was set-up in 2003 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on the recommendation of an Expert Group appointed by the Ministry. It provides access to electronic resources to its member institutions comprising of more than 1207 members including 48 core member institutions with MHRD funding, including IITs, IISc, NITs, NERIST, ISM, IIIT, IIITM , NITIE, IISER & NITTTR, 60 AICTE supported institutions and 1099 institutions that have joined the consortium under its self-supported category. The Consortium was converted into INDEST-AICTE Consortium in December 2005 with the AICTE playing pivotal role in enrolling its affiliated engineering colleges and institution as members of the consortium. Registration Fee There is no registration fee for the members of INDEST-AICTE Consortium. The participants need to submit their registration form through proper channel. However for non members the registration fee is Rs.1500. Accompanied persons shall be charged Rs. 1000 each extra. Lodging, Boarding and Travel The arrangement for lodging and boarding of participants will be made in Institute‘s guest houses from 17th November 2010 evening to 20th November 2010 morning on twin sharing and first come first basis. Rs 750/- shall be charged for accommodation. As the accommodation at IITR is limited, participants are requested to book their accommodation as early as possible by sending the requisite amount in the form of cheque/DD payable at Roorkee. DL will reach PB4 after 5 Years - Why this disparity?

** Apologies for cross-posting Dear Colleagues Already there is lot of injustice with the cadre of Librarians especially Deputy Librarians in the UGC Notification, Dated 30/06/2010. Now the Ministry of HRD has issued a new Notification, dated 26/08/2010 which denies placement in the PB 4 after 3 years. The Deputy Librarians will now be placed in the PB4 after 5 years. This will be applicable to all the Universities and Centrally Funded Institutions including IITs, etc. I request all the professional colleagues to rise on this occasion and write to the MHRD regarding this new anomaly at the earliest. The LIS bodies are also requested to take up the matter at association levels. The recent UGC notification and this notifications has entirely different version. It says Similarly,entry of Rs. 23890 in PB-3 with academic grade pay of Rs. 8000 will also apply to directly recruited Deputy Librarians and Deputy Directors of physical Education, who will move to PB-4 with academic grade pay of Rs. 9000 after completion of 5 years in that grade. Librarians Day Celebration by the Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Librarians Association, Udupi.

Dear Friends, The Librarians' Day was celebrated by the Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Librarian Association, Udupi in association with SDM College of Business Management at SDM College here on Friday August 21. Dr Devaraj K, the director of the college in his message lauded the contribution made by the great teacher and librarian Dr S R Ranganathan in the field of Library Science. He advised the teachers, parents and the librarians to motivate the students and children’s to use the resources available in the library to the maximum extent. He also said books are always been considered as the best friend and companion for the people and the child one who develops the habit of reading will have bright future. Dr Vishala B K, secretary and the librarian of St Agnes College, Mangalore highlighted the significance of the day and appreciated response received by the students for the competition. Essay and elocution competitions were conducted for High school and Primary School children in and around Mangalore. More than 60 students from 25 schools had participated in the competition. SDM College lecturers Renutakshi, Trishanth Kumar, Gowri Shenoy and Mumatha Pai were the judges. Santhosh Kumar, Librarian of SDM Law College welcomed the gathering and compared the programme. Developing Koha for Indian University Libraries

All, We have started work on a software development project to make Koha suitable for use in University libraries in India. Development will primarily be in the areas of: Approvals and payments work-flow in Acquisitions Tighter integration of Serials Subscriptions & Acquisitions Article Indexing and Analytical records Selective Dissemination of Information The project has been initiated and significantly funded by RapidRadio Solutions, a leading RFID technology provider to libraries in India. Partial funding for analytical records has been provided by the Mississippi Department of Archives and Records in the USA. This is first case of sponsorship of Koha development by an Indian entity. Such sponsorship is fairly common in the west, and most of Koha's capabilities have been developed via such funding. RapidRadio Solutions has also prepared requirements specifications under the advice and guidance of following senior library professionals: Dr. Anil Kumar, Librarian IIMA Mr. F.R.Sumer, Deputy Librarian, NEHU Shillong. Mr. Satish Deshpande, Dr. T.S. Kumbar, Librarian DAIICT Gandhinagar Mr. Kishor Satpathy, Librarian NIT Silchar.
