First public library in Kerala hosted online catalogue using Koha.

** Navodayam Public Library, Kollam District has selected Koha ( www.koha-community.org) for their integrated library system. This is the first public library in Kerala hosted online catalogue using Koha open source library management system. This library affiliated under Kerala State Library Council. Shri. A. Shajahan, District Collector, Kollam inagurated the automated library. Shri. M.A. Baby, Honourable State Education Minister was the chief guest of the function. The project funded under the category of 'Malayalam Computing' and 'Ente Gramam (My Village)' initiative started by Kerala IT Mission. This project completed with the coordination of Akshaya (an initiative Kerala State IT Mission) and Open Knowledge Society. Bibliographical details of 10000 Malayalam books can access through OPAC. But for the QUICK quantitative assessment of the contributions of author(s), this is the only parameter available and hence unless there is any alternative, this practice would continue. I remember Dr. Mashelkar's words when similar argument was made years before (Indian vs International journals). He indicated he is not against Indian Journals but they should raise their competitiveness so that the authors get attracted to them for publishing their science. So one should not equate Indian journals with no (or less) Impact Factor (IF). I also had exchange of thoughts on this with the authors and they admit that they not only benefit by getting IF to their credits but also the impartial refereeing system available with international journals help improving quality of their publication (exceptions apart). As a library professional, I would also like to indicate that the librarians can play a very important role in the organizations in helping assessment of individuals, projects, etc., with such bibliographic parameters. Note that there is no system that is perfect. Dear Tejas, Every book in print has a copyright page in the beginning, which states that this cannot be done. The Copyright generally reads as " Neither this book or any part may be produced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, microfilming, and recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the publisher" To make things easy, most publishers have now come out with the electronic form of all their print titles. These e-Books can be made available on IP basis, across the campuses, even in dormitories and hostels. Since most eBooks are unlimited access, the students can be benefitted widely. So the need for you scanning the titles can be minimized. You could just take a list of most widely read titles from your library and send it to the respective publishers to confirm if, they have e-copies for the same. The budgets that you may have set aside to scan them, may just cover the e-books. Highly cited papers from India and China

Dear Professional, Research papers published by Chinese and Indian researchers during 1998–2007 and cited at least 100 times by end of 2009 are analysed. There were 776 papers with at least one author from India (amounting to 0.32% of all papers from India) and 2260 papers with at least one author from China (0.4% of all papers from China) that have gone on to be cited at least 100 times. We have identified prominent authors and institutions, journals used and fields of research. Although highly cited Chinese papers were cited on average less often than the highly cited papers from India, Chinese authors have been able to place their papers in high impact journals such as Nature and Science far more often than Indian authors. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore are the prominent Indian institutions, whereas universities in Hong Kong, Peking University, Tshing Hua University and several institutions under the Chinese Academy of Science dominate in China. In terms of citations, Chinese National Human Genome Centre Shanghai,Shanghai, tops the list. Conference on Digital Archiving of Community Knowledge Organized by Centre for Community Knowledge, Ambedkar University, Delhi 15-18 December 2010 Theme The conference will deliberate on systems and methods of collecting, documenting and applying Knowledge located and embedded in people and communities. Such knowledge is location and context specific and grows in the processes of its acquisition, use and dissemination by members of the community in changing social, political, cultural and economic contexts. The challenge is to archive such knowledge, usually oral, in a form that can link to acquisition, use and dissemination in modes compatible with formal, academic, multi-disciplinary and institutional processes. Effort must be made to ensure that such archives are available to the communities concerned to enable them to enrich their own repositories of knowledge. The conference is being organized in collaboration with the World Oral Literatures Project, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge UK. In the context of the conference, what we refer to as Community Knowledge has also been called Traditional Knowledge, Oral Knowledge, Grass-roots Knowledge, Indigenous Knowledge, etc. The areas covered under this rubric include: * Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of cultural heritage * Performing arts, such as traditional music, dance and theater * Social practices, rituals and festive events * Knowledge and practices concerning life, nature and the universe * Plastic Arts and Traditional craftsmanship. The Conference will be of interest to: * The Communities concerned who wish to document such knowledge * Field workers who collect such knowledge * System designers engaged in database management, who can contribute to an open-source design solution, catering to large quantities of video and audio data, in addition to images and documents. * Scholars and researchers interested in linking their disciplinary knowledge with oral community knowledge. Topics Digital archiving entails discussion on a matrix of three linked aspects: 1. Data and Information Collection: What and how to document – who decides? 2. Documentation/ Archiving: Design parameters of MIS (storage and retrieval); Classification and Codification; Open Source Technology Platforms. 3. Users of Archives: Researchers, Scholars, Policy makers and the Communities concerned. They would suggest Retrieval Taxonomy/ Thematic aggregations and the level of detail expected from the Archives. The Conference will be conducted in an interactive mode following presentations by Keynote speakers like Dr Mark Turin of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, and Dr Kim Fortun of the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York.
