Dear All, I would like to know if the performance / life cycle of LF/HF/UHF Tags will be affected when they pass through EM based EAS systems ( Antennas, Activators & De-activators ). What happens when the EM strip is placed very near the tag? Will it affect the tag's read range? Any input from libraries using both RFID with EAS? Dear members, Our University (Panjab University) will be holding a Job-Fest in the month of February 2011 covering all the disciplines including Library & Information Science. The department TPOs (Training & Placement Officers) have been given the responsibility to call/contact/inform the prospective employers (in their area) regarding the event and apprise them of the services/facilities to be provided to them in case they come to the University for hiring professionals. Such campus placement are very common in Engineering, Management, Computer Science (and the likes) but the problem I'm facing (being TPO) to identify such recruiters who will be interested not only in hiring LIS professionals but also visiting the campus for the same. I don't want to miss this opportunity for my students (our university has allocated grant for this Job-Fest). I seek valuable opinion/feedback from the learned members of the LIS-Forum to make the event fruitful for LIS students. NEWS: Birds of America, the world's most expensive illustrated book, has been sold for a record price of 7.3 million pounds ($11.5 million) at an auction in London. Sotheby's auction house on Tuesday said the price paid for the work of celebrated ornithologist and painter John James Audubon was a record for any printed book at auction. Excerpt of the article ‘Never waste a good crisis” used to be the catchphrase of the Obama team in the run-up to the presidential election. In that spirit, let us see what we can learn from official reactions to the WikiLeaks revelations. The most obvious lesson is that it represents the first really sustained confrontation between the established order and the culture of the internet. There have been skirmishes before, but this is the real thing. And as the backlash unfolds — first with deniable attacks on internet service providers hosting WikiLeaks, later with companies like Amazon and eBay and PayPal suddenly “discovering” that their terms and conditions preclude them from offering services to WikiLeaks, and then with the U.S. government attempting to intimidate Columbia students posting updates about WikiLeaks on Facebook — the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured. The response has been vicious, co-ordinated and potentially comprehensive, and it contains hard lessons for everyone who cares about democracy and about the future of the net. Dear Professionals, Greetings! I am presently in United Kingdom on a “Commonwealth Professional Fellowship” to work on “Information Literacy, Web 2.0 and Access to Research”. As part of this fellowship, I visited several universities in England and Scotland to meet librarians involved in this activity. UK Librarians have been very cooperative and willingly shared their time and expertise with me. I could meet some authors who have made seminal contributions. This gave me a theoretical and pedagogical basis for developing similar information literacy initiatives at my home institute. Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) awards fellowships to committed librarians from commonwealth countries every year. Started in 2002, about seven Indian librarians have received this fellowship so far. CSC encourages Fellows to share their UK experience and benefits with fellow professionals and hence I have set up a blog http://kanamadi.wordpress.comThis is just the beginning and I would keep posting about my new learnings during and beyond this fellowship. I welcome all professionals to contribute to this blog to make it even more resourceful.
