Is Librarian teaching or Non teaching?

Dear Professionals, There is a lot of talk about the place of librarians in academics. I worked for faculty status and non-faculty status positions. I am happy with either position since I’m doing my job, my work; I can publish and speak regardless of whether or not anyone tells me to. But I never really understood why some libraries had a status while others didn’t. What specifically is the purpose of having a status track for librarians? To encourage publication? To put librarians on the same level as other academic faculty? To create job security? To get the respect we deserve? Maybe that’s why I like discuss here. I don’t get judged for my age, my looks or my chair. I’m judged for what I am and what I do. “Librarian with faculty rank.” The only places I see our “faculty rank” coming into play is in payroll, vacation days, and in the ability to be a part of faculty clubs and other committees. While we have a “place at the table,” we are certainly not seen as faculty members by the faculty. It is clear to me that the faculty members see us as support staff. They see us as people who help them find articles and help their students to learn how to do library research. They don’t see us as teachers, as creators of knowledge, and as experts in our particular field (librarianship). And in spite of our degrees and our knowledge, we are here to support the students and faculty. That’s our job. So while I’d love for faculty members to see me as an intellectual equal and to understand what I do, I don’t think status is what would do it. Some persons arguing against made the valid point that librarians can become involved in faculty committees simply by being given faculty rank. However, they also argued that librarians don’t need the security of tenure because they are collecting knowledge not creating it. There I disagree. There are plenty of librarians who write and who do original research. There are plenty of librarians on the cutting edge of technology and are developing amazing applications. They are creating knowledge. If the purpose of librarians having tenure is to secure academic freedom for us (and the ability to take sabbaticals to do original research and whatnot), I’m all for it. But that is rarely an argument. With faculty status, librarians find it easier to earn the respect of their faculty peers and administrators. They become credible academics who are capable partners in the shaping of teaching and research. As faculty members, librarians are more likely to have a say in establishing the criteria on which academe will judge libraries in the 21st century. Sad Demise of Dr. Padma Upadhya in Manipal

Dear Porfessional Colleagues, Many of you might know Dr. Padma Upadhya from Manipal. It is with deep sorrow to inform you that Dr. Padma suddenly demised yesterday in Manipal due to some health problem. Padma completed her MLIS from Mangalore University in early 80s and started her career as Asst. Librarian at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. She was awarded PhD from Mysore University in 1999 for her research carried out under the supervision of Dr. I K Ravichandra Rao [DRTC] Later, she moved to teach system related courses in Manipal Institute of Management >From Manipal she moved to Delhi on Govt of India Research Project to promote computer literacy among rural youths and from there she moved to institutions like Indian Business Academy, AIMS, Alliance Business Academy at Bangalore. >From ABA she came back to Manipal and started Computer Training Institute in collaboration GNIT and started Abacus Institute of Management in collaboration with Abacus. She had tremondous potential to take many initiatives and absorb the challenges in life and profession. She had achieved lot in short span of life. We librarians in Manipal were working as small family member for workshops, seminars and other professional activities. Dr. Padma is survived by her husband, two daughters [elder completed her BE in Aeronatical Engg and younger studying PU], aged parents, younger sisters. Being eldest daughter, she took the responsibility of her sisters' marriage. We Librarians from Manipal experess our heartfelt condolenses to the daparted soul and pray the almighty to give strength to her family to withstand the great loss. She had made meaningful contribution to the library profession through her teaching and training initiatives. For young professionals she was not only inspiring but also a guide to many. I have known her very closely and have a great respect for her. May her soul rest in peace. I express my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family. The success of the Web can be attributed to several factors, most notably to its principled scalable design, but also to a number of subsequent ICT developments such as smart user-generated content, mobile devices, and most recently cloud computing. The first two of these have dramatically lowered the last barriers of entry when it comes to producing and consuming information online, leading to an unprecedented growth and mass collaboration. They are responsible for hundreds of millions of users all over the globe creating high-quality encyclopedias, publishing Terabytes of multimedia content, contributing to world-class software, and lively taking part in defining the agenda of many aspects of our society by raising their voices, and publicly expressing and sharing their ideas, viewpoints, and resources. The other side of the coin in this unique success story is, nevertheless, the great challenges associated with managing the sheer amounts of information continuously being published online, whilst allowing for purposeful use, and leveraging the diversity inherently unfolding through global-scale collaboration. In this context, diversity includes different opinions, sentiments, preferences, or worldviews that are reflected in the way information is expressed on the Web. These challenges are still to be solved at many levels, from the infrastructure to store and access the information, through the methods and techniques to make sense out of it, to the paradigms underlying the processes of Web-based information provision and consumption. As an example, when searching for blog posts, state-of-the-art technology – be that popularity-based algorithms, recommendation engines or collaborative filters – tends to return either the most popular posts, or those which correspond with a personal profile and therefore with the known opinions and tastes of the reader. Alternative points of view, and new unexpected content, are not taken into account as they are not highly ranked, and posts expressing different opinions are sometimes even discarded. This behavior has particularly negative consequences when dealing with information that is expected and intended to be subject to diverse opinion – as is the case with news reports, ratings of products or media content, customer reviews, or any other type of subjective assessment. The same negative effects apply in a community-driven environment that is designed for collaboration – the most obvious example here being Wikipedia and the blogosphere. The information diversity exposed in such an environment, impressive both with respect to scale and the richness of opinions and viewpoints expressed, cannot be handled without adequate computer support in an economically feasible manner. In the long run, maintaining the current state-of-affairs will change the ways and the extent to which people are informed (or not) on a particular topic, tremendously influencing how they look into that topic, what they find about it and what they think about it. On top of all this, it is meanwhile acknowledged that the current state of affairs hampers true collaboration. Wikipedia is a tremendous success, but it is also a largely meritocratic system with a decreasing number of active contributors, whereas the blogosphere has to deal with the limited attention of the blog authors. What is needed are novel concepts, methods and tools that allow humans and machines to leverage the huge amounts of information created by a community, based on interaction models that support expressing, communicating and reasoning about divergent models simultaneously. This would not only enhance true collaboration, but would also significantly improve various aspects of the information management life cycle, thus addressing information overload in sectors which rely on opinions-driven information sources and mass participation – news, ratings, reviews, and social and information sharing portals of any kind. == Goal of the workshop == The overall aim of this workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners to present and discuss their ideas related to the challenges posed by diversity on the Web. We aim to address a wide array of interdisciplinary questions, which need to be tackled in order to preserve the fragile balance between a world that is continually converging and growing together, the rich diversity of the global society, and the dangers of fragmentation and splintering. This includes but is not limited to questions such as ‘How to model diversity?’, ‘How to discover bias and opinion in blog posts, tweets, forum items, wiki edits, etc.?’, ‘How to rank, aggregate, summarize, and exploit information in a diversity-aware manner?’, ‘What are the applications of diversity-rich information sources?’, ‘How can we use diversity as an asset instead of regarding it as a barrier?’. == Topics == In particular we welcome submissions that * Analyze the capabilities of current information management models, algorithms and technologies to leverage knowledge diversity, * Extend existing models, methods, techniques and tools to accommodate the requirements arising from paying a proper account to diversity-expressed information sources and communication and collaboration environments characterized by a rich variety of opinions and viewpoints. * Discuss the foundations of knowledge diversity on the Web and propose alternative paradigms, * Propose novel evaluation strategies, methods and techniques to assess the impact of diversity-minded information management. We explicitly invite experience reports on topics related of diversity from the Web as it is used in India. == Submissions == We aim at four different kind of submission: (1) research papers of the length of 8 pages presenting mature work, prototypes and methodologies, (2) position papers of the length of 4 pages presenting early work and elaborated ideas, (3) demo outlines of the length of 2 pages, and (4) experience reports of up to 6 pages about dealing and managing with diversity, especially within the usage of the Web in India. Bandaramaram Library and Information Centre (BLIC) inaugurated

Dear Friends, A small lamp of knowledge was lit in Bandaramaram village of Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh last Friday, January14, 2011. Bandaramaram Library and Information Centre (BLIC) was inaugurated by Mr. Vinod Reddy, Chairman of Nalgonda Zilla Granthalaya Samstha at an impressive function attended parents, children and local media. As a symbolic gesture and first contribution, Mr. Vinod Reddy presented two big bundles containing books received by him as complimentary copies from publishers/authors. He exhorted the gathering not to depend on the Government for library development but mobilize resources on their own and strive to start libraries in villages. Mr. A. Srinivas of Gundrampally Library and Information Centre provided a large number of books from his duplicate collection to BLIC and guided on its establishment. The driving force behind BLIC is Mr. Gaddam Satyanarayana, Librarian of Fergusson College in Hyderabad. He struggled for almost three years to smoothen out political differences among the local leaders belonging to various parties and finally could enlist their support for establishment of a village library. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gaddam Uppalaiah, sarpanch of Bandaramaram Gram Panchayat appealed to the parents to send their children to the village library whenever the children have free time to gain knowledge and information. Responding to the appeal made by him, several donations in the form of a book rack, chairs, newspaper/magazine subscriptions, etc., were announced by the participants at the meeting. It is heartening to note that an amount of Rs.1000 was donated to the library by a young, low-salaried constable belonging to ST community. Bandaramaram is in a backward area with poor literacy level (30%). Unemployment is the major problem faced by the local youth. It has a high school with a strength of around 250 students. This school does not have a library of its own. It is hoped that BLIC would serve both as a public library cum school library for the whole village. Of the total population of 3000, STs form a major part numbering 1400. The people of this village need books in Telugu and English mainly of the following types: Reference books (dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, career guides, etc.) Religious books Englishspoken and written Agriculture Light reading (novels, stories, childrens literature, etc.) I appeal to all LIS professionals and library lovers to support this fledgling library in whatever manner they can.
