The foundation of the Library was laid in 1875 when Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a great social reformer of his time, established a School that later became Mohammaden Anglo Oriental College in 1877 and finally Aligarh Muslim University in 1920 by an Act of Parliament. The foundation stone of the Library was initially laid by Lord Lytton, the then Viceroy of India. That is why the Library was originally named as Lytton Library. The foundation stone of the present grand seven storied building of Maulana Azad Library was laid on November 12, 1955 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, ex Prime Minister of India, who most graciously came again to inaugurate the Library on December 6, 1960. The library has thus completed 50 years. It was named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the great Educationist, Statesman and the first Education Minister of independent India. During the last couple of years, library services in the University have been substantially updated and modernized. Developments in the library services with the advent of latest ICT applications include- campus wide access to Online Catalogue, Digital Resource Centre with 2 lakh e-books / Encyclopedias and many language learning softwares, online journals; Automatic Security Gate for books; CCTV etc. As a sequel to that the library has recently received IP based online access to almost all important Internationally reputed Full Text Data Bases namely ‘Web of Science’, ‘Science Direct’, ‘SciFinder Scholar’, ‘ERMED Consortia’, ‘J-Gate’, ‘BIOSIS’ and ‘DELNET’. The Library serves the University community from 8 AM to 2 A.M. (next day). About 5000 students, teachers and other members of the University visit the Library daily. *Department of Library and Information Science* Department of Library and Information Science of Aligarh Muslim University is a premier institution in the field of Library and Information Science in India with a history that reaches back about sixty years. The foundation of the Department was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a ‘Certificate Course in Library Science’, by the then University Librarian, Padma Shri Prof. S. Bashiruddin. Encouraged by the success of the certificate course, late Prof. S. Bashiruddin introduced ‘Bachelor of Library Science’ in 1958-59 with full time lecturers for the first time in the country. I, Gautam John and Arun Ram were some of Bangalore Wikipedians who attended the event. Liam explained Wikipedia and how it be can used easily with presentations and live demonstrations, which thrilled the audience. There were several questions around Wikipedia policies and how it deals with controversial topics around politics, culture. Audience also showed lot of interest in the copyright policies of Wikipedia. Liam explained it nicely by illustrating the different licensing options from all rights reserved to public domain and highlighting the licenses applicable to Wikipedia. Liam shared how Oxford English Dictionary led the crowd sourcing towards creating knowledge, when it decided to publish the complete dictionary and sought inputs from public to share all the known words. He shared his popular quote If people were passing out Knowledge on the street for free everyday, I am sure that there would be a lot more learning, based on Gregg Gillis's quote about free paints and painting. There were questions on software for building an archive of publications and Liam suggested e-hive as a potential option. There was an interesting questions on the number of contributors for Sanskrit Wikipedia and Arun answered the same, based on his knowledge of working with Sanskrit Community. We also met with senior public library professionals and a member of Karnataka knowledge commission, who offered their help towards initiatives to provide free access to Wikipedia in public libraries. Most of the audience were excited to know that Wikipedia is available in several Indian languages. I extended an invitation to the audience to take the community/chapter's help in spreading Wikipedia in their respective professional communities/users. National Diversity of International Journals The journals ranking and Impact factor of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) is increasingly turning into an international currency for the quality of research output. More than 14000 journals are ISI-ranked as journal quality and impact. In that most of them are labeled “major international” journals this analysis of ISI data reveals that the attribute “international” is not always appropriate. National diversity of journals is very low due to a dominance of authors from English-speaking countries and U.S. authors in particular. Younger journals and journals with an explicitly stated international mission tend to be international, whereas the internationality of the affiliated organization or impact of a journal had no influence on national diversity. The results suggest that it may be desirable to clearly distinguish between national and international journals, to increase the number of international journals, and to support authors whose mother tongue is not English. *International Conference “ Convergence of Libraries , Archives and Museams on User Empowerment through Digital Technologies* * * The three day International Conference “ Convergence of Libraries , Archives and Museums on User Empowerment through Digital Technologies organized by National institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi in collaboration with IFLA Art Libraries section held on February 14-17, 2011 concluded successfully. The truly world class and prestigious venue of IIC provided a stimulating environment and fostered an unleashing of intellectual discourse, debate and discussion in this unique international conference of Librarians, Archivists & Conservators to promote digital convergence of the memory institutions. The well attended event sourced together nearly 300 delegates and scores of experts ranging from academicians , Librarians, , Computer Scientists, Conservationist , Software Engineers to Technocrats both from academia and industry representing several countries . Conference was marked by lively talks, passionate presentations and subtle arguments and counter arguments. Stalwarts from across the country grappled with issues and offered wide ranging opinions and views. Conference opened with the remarks of Dean, Academics, NIFT who welcomed the participants and speakers and wished conference a great success and emphasized the need for preserving cultural heritage of the country through digital depositions . She further laid stress upon the need for sectoral collaboration and networking for the exchange and sharing of knowledge. The conference was inaugurated by Ms.Monika. Garg, (IAS) Director General , NIFT who in her inaugural talk deliberated upon preservation of knowledge for posterity.. She dwelt upon the need for organizing and delivering information in more efficient ways as it is driving force behind knowledge economy. In ‘knowledge-driven’ environment, scholarship can flourish if the existing stock of knowledge is made adequate use of, and concerted efforts are made to build further on it. Accessing and retrieval of desired information, to facilitate this process is, undoubtedly, a most challenging task. She stated that Information Technology (IT) has facilitated this challenging task a great deal for both, users as well as providers of information, Spread over four days , 2 plenary sessions, 18 technical sessions, 12 invited talks, product presentations , tutorials by leading Academicians & Industry experts, special session by Wikimedia , a special day of parallel sessions on Preservation of Heritage Resources and two penal discussions, conference witnessed presentation of nearly 60 research papers and involved a galaxy of eminent experts, leading professionals, academicians and entrepreneurs like Prof. Shalni Urs, ,Prof.PB Mangla Prof.T Visvanathan, Dr. Jan Simane, Ms Lucy Tedd, Mr. Guss Ven Den Brakel, Mr. Rolf Kallman, Mr.Matin Flaynn, Dr. S Majumdar, Dr. Roshan Raina Dr. Jagtar Singh , Dr. RK Chadha , Dr. PR Goswami, Dr. Rakesh Bhatt Prof. IV Malhan, Mr. Dinsh Katre ,Prof, JK Mitra and Dr. Mrs SP Singh and many others exchanged views on issues related to technological, infrastructural and organizational developments including partnerships in the knowledge sector. One of the recurring thread which held the discussion together for three days was bringing together of set of individual cognitions and experiences of authors forming a common collective of memories sharing, interacting and integrating with the memories of a wide array of participants. The themes and topics of papers straddle the whole spectrum from collaboration to convergence to divergence, from social media for empowerment to digital divide, from digital preservation to institutional repositories, from enhancing user access to heritage material to library service through social networking, from information literacy as a tool for user empowerment to visualization for digital libraries, from information seeking behavior to open content; from hanging together to crossing continents. The issue of empowerment of users in Libraries, Archives and Museums was analyzed from multiple perspectives during the conference. All issues related to user empowerment ranging from changing roles of users and their rights, special needs of the disadvantaged user communities to digital preservation technologies, social media and sustainability concerns were dealt with. Library & Information professionals, Archivists and Conservators, as end users of open source and commercial software discussed trends and problems specific to their own sectors. It was opined that digital revolution has initiated an irrevocable process of convergence in the knowledge sector in the 21st century. The traditional barriers of academic disciplines, professions and institutions are disappearing fast as a unified world of knowledge is emerging. The traditional physical infrastructure and organizational setups have become irrelevant and various forms - textual, audio and visual – have fused together to create a mutable global knowledge repository. It was further observed that advancements in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies have also unleashed democratizing forces enabling access to all to the inner recesses of the knowledge world. The role of the user in knowledge repositories such as libraries, archives and museums has transformed from a passive receiver to a participant in the creation and dissemination of information. Some of the specific themes and areas covered during the conference are as under: 1. Development of information systems and services with the goal of optimum user empowerment 2. Sensitization of information professionals and conservators to deliver user-oriented service 3. Creation of awareness among users about their rights 4. Promotion of partnerships of institutions and professionals of the knowledge sector for resource sharing 5. Attaining of convergence of the memory institutions viz., Libraries, Archives and Museums. Participating delegates complimented the organizers for organizing such a successful convention and bringing together so many diverse stream at a single platform and discussing issues both in context and threadbare and felt they will go back to their work places much enlightened and keep the memories of this four day convention alive in their minds and hearts for long time to come . They emphasized the need for continuing with such kind of endeavor in future too so as to institutionalise and strengthen the concept of convergence for the larger benefits of information based professionals. Dear LIS Professionals, Karnataka State Library Association (KALA) and NCSI-NET (an alumni association of Students and staff of NCSI) are happy to invite you to the Special Lecture on; Topic: "Wikipedia and GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums)" Speaker: Liam Wyatt (Wikimedia Foundation's Cultural Partnerships Fellow) Date and Time: 19th Feb 2011 at 10.30AM Venue: Seminar Hall, National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), IISc, Bangalore -12 Abstract: In this presentation Liam will discuss his project as the "Wikipedian in Residence" at the British Museum and the current global cultural partnerships project. He will then talk about the kinds of collaboration that libraries and librarians can achieve with Wikimedia and also answer any questions about Wikipedia more generally. About the Speaker: Liam Wyatt is the Wikimedia Foundation's Cultural Partnerships Fellow<http://bit.ly/GLAMfellow> (a.k.a GLAM fellow), based in Sydney. He has done his bachelors in Globalisation. He had been given a one year fellowship to focus on Cultural Partnerships within the Wikiverse. His role is to help create systems and processes to make outreach partnerships more efficient and effective. He believes that now the cultural sector has seen that working with Wikimedia can be A Good Thing(tm), that we must have reasonably professional processes in place for managing those relationships.
