Chu Shuqing, the library's curator, famously said: "I don't have the right to keep them (the beggars) away from the library, but anyone (who doesn't agree) has the right to leave." The comment caused heated debate on the Internet. Another library director told the media that this wasn't news because as a public service the library welcomed all people who like reading. Like many others, the incident grabbed my attention. "What? A beggar, who may be ill, is allowed to be in a library? How could other readers stand to sit with him side by side?" was my initial reaction. But the director's response to the media made me ashamed of myself. Since a library is for the public, it should welcome all people who are fair in front of the law and should not judge anyone before exploring the truth. What makes such "non-news" important? I think it is because as a society we are used to classifying people into different classes and groups and giving them a label. The wealthy are depicted as the "noble community" in many advertisements, students who return from overseas study are the "elite", while beggars and the homeless are all illiterate and up to no good. Society is inclined to put those in the more attractive groups on a pedestal and tries to cozy up to them, but gives a cold shoulder to those in the more disadvantaged groups, such as beggars. But is this behavior good for society? I think the answer is no. The writer Lung Ying-tai said that the standard by which to measure the civilization of a society is not how many high-rises it has or how many limousines are on the street, but its attitude toward the socially vulnerable groups. I couldn't agree with her more. To me, the criteria to judge the quality of a society is not how it treats the "elite", but its attitude and treatment toward the more disadvantaged groups. Big cities, like Shanghai, treat the elite groups very well. The city government has built low-rent apartments for overseas talent working in Shanghai and various policies seem to mostly benefit those with a good educational background. Some Chinese cities have started building special houses for the homeless, establishing more homes for the elderly and giving subsidies to families before Spring Festival. But compared with all they provide the elite, it is still not enough. What's worse is that the public's attitude toward the disadvantaged hasn't changed much. Even though traditional Chinese culture encourages us to show sympathy and compassion for disadvantaged groups, it doesn't encourage us to respect them as other human beings. The result is that people look down on them after showing their compassion. The comedy actor Zhao Benshan was sued by US audiences when he performed overseas, as during the performance his troupe made fun of the obese, disabled people and people with mental health problems. Zhao didn't understand that although Chinese audiences found making fun of these people amusing it offended audiences in the United States. The Argentinean writer Jorges Luis Borges once said "I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library". We can start building a paradise by first building a library for everyone, rich or poor. The author is director of the China Daily Shanghai News Center. Hi, Very true, I and my library is too suffrer of their services as well, Research India Publications are so very bad with their services. They havent provided the online access as yet for the year 2010, plus they are unable to send missing issues for the year 2010 as yet. Many of calls n mails being send to them, but they dont reply. Two girls at reception always have same reply, "Mr Vivekanand (owner of the publication) will see the matter, n he has not came yet". Be it any time of the day, the same reply will be given by them. Hello all Its good to join such networks and associations, ya I agree, they provide common forum to library professionals, they develop understanding and cooperation among libraries and librarians, for sure they share resources and information, but I would like to know how they identify and overcome problems and exploitation being faced by the library staff?? Ya, I know those who have been in private sector much be awared of the problems, coz they themselves might have faced themselves, but how to overcome these problems. Not every one can switch to govt sector, not everyone can attaing various qualifications or can pursue further studies. In my knowledge, I never seen any Library association acted upon to reach the AICTE or NAAC to tell them that their norms are not being actully applied in their so called affiliated institutions. No pay commission, no 5 day working policies are being actually taking any place in privated sector. Library staff are deprived of facilities which are being given to the teaching staff. Why such private sectors are so fearless about such norms or guidelines, only bcoz they have enough sources that even inspections couldn't find anything fishy there. What kind of inspections are these if they are preplanned or give enough time to the institution to prepare data and their institution what to show to the inspection team, some times such these teams dont even come to take round to actual place either, they sit in well decorated conference rooms, see well prepared paper work and data, have their breakfast n lunch and moves back. Whose going to put a check on them, whose going to show them the actual picture, not a single person or a small group can raise their voices being uncertain job market, where there is no value of employee. Libraries can be handled by attendents even, stability of Librarians is no more required,employees need jobs but jobs dont need proper qualified employees, there is lack of jobs, not of employees. Can't our Library Associations n professionals talk to the AICTE and NAAC teams to join hands and see the actual conditions of the Libraries and Library staff in these private institutions not like any preplanned inspection teams but like vigilation department Wish to like to views of all the Library professionals .......................................... Boshamer Professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He teaches courses in humaninformation interaction, interface design and testing, and digital libraries. He heads the Interaction Design Laboratory at SILS. His Ph.D. is from Wayne State University in mathematics education with an emphasis on educational computing. He has published over 200 articles, chapters and reports in a variety of books and journals. He is author of a book titled Information Seeking in Electronic Environments published by Cambridge University Press and a forthcoming book titled Information Concepts: From books to Personal Identities in Cybespace. Professor Marchionini has had grants or research awards from the National Science Foundation, Council on Library Resources, the National Library of Medicine, the Library of Congress, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kellogg Foundation, and NASA, The National Cancer Institute, Microsoft, Google, and IBM among others. Professor Marchionini was Editorin- Chief for the ACM Transaction on Information Systems (2002- 2008) and is the editor for the Morgan-Claypool Lecture Series on Information Concepts, Retrieval, and Services. He has been program chair forACM SIGIR (2005) and ACM/IEEE JCDL (2002) as well as general chair ofACMDL96 and JCDL2006. He serves or has served on a dozen editorial boards and is the 2010 president of the American Society of Information Science and Technology. His current interests and projects are related to: interfaces that support information seeking and information retrieval; usability of personal health records; alternative representations for electronic documents; multimedia browsing strategies; digital libraries; and evaluation of interactive media, especially for learning and teaching. He currently has a 3-year grant from NSF on established a search results framework that supports searches over multiple sessions and in collaboration. There was a request in our forum on jan 19 asking for the ? two classic articles in physics:it follows as... We wish to acquire the following two articles. If anybody has these articles, could you please send us the pdf of the same (or hardcopy at the address mentioned below, in case pdf is not possible). The articles requested are : 1. Arkiv for Matematik, Astronomi och Fysik, 1942, v.28A (6), p.19- , Alfven,H./ Remarks on the reotation of a magnetized sphere with application to solar rotation. 2. Nature, 1942, v.150, p.405-406, Alfven,H./ Existence of electromagnetic-hydrodynamic waves. The article with serial number two was available over the internet and that with the number first with a broken link and was not accessible.I mailed for assistance for locating it to the Science Reference Librarian of Library of Congress and the British Library.The very next day the Reference Librarian of the British Library responded that it was available there and a processing fees of 10 pound(approx) may be sent to customer service division to procure it.The science Reference Librarian Of LOC was kind enough to sent the scanned pdf file free of any processing charge of the same under fair use privilege for our Library. So it will be useful for all of us to make use of online reference services of the great libraries LOC and the British Library for Precise Information search.
