Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the launch of the SciVerse Applications Apps for Library Idea Challenge <http://www.appsforlibrary.com/> . The international competition encourages librarians and information professionals to conceptualize solutions to the challenges that they and their constituents face in addressing the search and discovery of information. Entrants are invited to submit specific ideas for applications for the SciVerse suite that solve problems affecting the search and discovery of information within librarian and researcher workflows alike. Selected app concepts will be posted on the challenge website and open to commentary from peers and the public, enabling a dialogue within the librarian community to identify problems and discuss potential solutions. Two grand-prize winners will be selected – one by a panel of judges and one by community vote. The winners will each receive a cash prize of € 750 (approximately $1,000 USD). The winners’ names and concepts will also be featured in the relevant Elsevier library and information science journals. Other prizes will be available to eligible idea entrants and commenters. The call for entries opened May 13th and the deadline for submissions is September 2nd, 2011. An international panel of judges will select up to 10 finalist app idea entries. Re.Discripancies in the article on OSS (Mariyam Shipha)

In response to the comments posted by Mariyam Shiphaa regarding my recent article published in ALIS, I would like to enumerate the follwing points: In the world of scholarly communication, nationality, I believe, is less important than the purpose of disseminating research information. And when it comes to open source philosophy, nationality is altogether perhaps irrelevant. This is quite evident from the fact that KOHA (originated outside India) has gained much more popularity in India than it’s very own NewGenLib. In open source software, reporting of bugs and shortcomings is predominantly dependent on its user base. And when it comes to a OSS with a small user community and without any vendor support, I believe that it is a little difficult to distinguish between a real bug and our inability to find a solution quickly. Thus, the process of discovering flaws in OSS with a smaller community base (as in case of NewGenLib) is relatively slow in comparison to an open source with a larger community base, say like KOHA. You have pointed out that I highlighted some of the problems with the software in the training program. Actually, there has been a considerable passage of time between then and when the article was written. So some of the problems discussed have already been solved in NewGenlib community at Nabble. I, therefore, kindly request you to visit regularly the Newgenlib Community pages on Nabble. Binding problem: The logic applied in the software is that whenever the library send its documents for binding in a lot, all the bound volumes should be returned after that billing is usually done. Partial receiving of bound documents is already there in Newgenlib, but billing is possible only after receiving all the bound volumes. The analogy with acquisition process, where partial receiving of order document is not being applied in the binding process, because here library document are going outside of the library. The article was completed in May 2010 before the release of 2.5 versions and it is mainly based on our experience with NewGenLib 2.1 version. Thus up-gradation problem has not been discussed. When upgrading from 2.1 to 2.5, the problem arises due to overdue books. The easiest way to solve the problem is to return all the overdue books after taking a print of overdue books from desktop module. Then update the database. It will work fine. You may like to know that the journal had got the article peer reviewed by an anonymous referee who had suggested many important points which I had incorporated in the article before its final publication. Also please remember, that unless we are absolutely sure about a flaw in the software, we can’t report that in the article. Anyway, thank you for your interest and your views. Dear friends, You may perhaps be aware that NCSI has been, amongst other activities, imparting training in information management for several years. The training program has endeavoured to keep pace with the times. Accordingly, new approaches and courses have been regularly reflected in the curriculum. A very valuable feature of the program has been the accommodation of very different and even conflicting perspectives. It was believed that an exposure to different ways of approaching and solving problems would go a long way in developing the trainees' abilities. Though not necessarily mutually exclusive, it was left to the trainees' discretion as to which approach they eventually wanted to follow. The process of revising and updating the course contents continued till the year 2008 when the training program in 'Information and Knowledge Management'(IKM) was closed down. The last batch of the IKM program saw the introduction of a new course titled 'Knowledge Economics'. This was besides the other courses that were being offered then- Digital Libraries, Introduction to Knowledge Management, Content Analysis, Information Economics amongst others. The purpose of this mail is to share with you the outline of the course contents on Knowledge Economics and in the process tap on your collective knowledge and wisdom in course curriculum design. While universities and training institutes in the country stand to benefit immensely through such co-innovation, we are hopeful that other information and knowledge service organizations will also gain in the process. While we at NCSI continue to work at developing new services, we believe this can be accelerated through your joint participation. A number of new potential services are in different stages of conceptualization and design and we welcome you to take part in the discovery process. As with the NCSI hosted discussion fora Lis-Forum and KM-Forum, we hope to continue to play the role of a facilitator.
